Brownell accusations and coaching styles ...

There have been many, many coaches in different sports who used anger and profanity to chastise and motivate players. Often this takes on a direct, personal nature when it is directed at a particular player. It has been that way for a long, long time. It is nothing new or unusual. In the current incident with Brownell, supposedly Brownell "threatened his future" by saying he would tell future employers who might call for a reference that the player was a lazy piece of sh@t. I know several guys who played college football, and I've heard stories much, much worse than that. My father used to watch Clemson football practice back in the 1940s and 50s, and he said he felt bad for the players because Howard talked to them and treated them like dogs (during practice), and I mean in a very personal way. These coaches are usually, gruff, matter-of-fact, not touchy-feely guys. Most players who played for most of these coaches left the programs with a tremendous life-long respect and admiration for these coaches, because they knew at the end of the day, these coaches were pushing them to be their best, and would be there to hug their necks and celebrate with them and support them when it was all over. Of course, there are exceptions to that, when coaches break laws, become physical, cross other lines with psycho behavior and otherwise create toxic environments (Bobby Knight comes to mind).

On the other end of the spectrum, you've got the nurturers/teachers/mentors (think Dabo as opposed to Bobby Knight). Don't get me wrong, we've all seen Dabo get in the face of a player who made a bone-headed mistake, or blow up at an official, but with these coaches it's all about player and personal development through hard work and accoutability, all while having fun along the way. The focus is getting players to buy in willingly by making it fun and rewarding and appealing to their hearts and minds, rather than out of fear or intimidation. Personally, I much prefer this method. If you are a Clemson fan, you've seen this put to work and carried out masterfully by Dabo. More and more coaches are now emulating (or at least trying) Dabo.

I don't really know where Brownell falls on this spectrum. Rightly or wrongly, I guarantee simply cursing at a player in practice, even making it "personal", even if it is unfair or misplaced, is not that unusual, certainly not unheard of. I have always assumed it is fairly common in college sports. Now, if Brownell is over the top with this kind of behavior, or if he really is blaming walk-ons for losses, or if he is doing other things he is alledged to have done which could be creating a toxic environment on the team, then yes, that's a problem, especially if it is not offset by the certainty of total unwavering commitment and support for every single player from Brownell on a personal level. But, angrily cursing at a player and calling them out in practice is a HUGE nothing burger. Want to fire Brownell? Fine! He has 11 years of mediocrity to support that idea.

Supposedly Brownlee cursed at a walk-on player and he quit the team. Now the kid's Dad, who is a former politician, has a lot to say about it. Now I see that I am the blowhard I was beotching about.

maybe Brownell just didn't realize who he was? Or rather, whose son he was? Because certainly politician's sons should always be treated differently than regular people's sons. Or else there's no point in being part of the elite, is there? And to be cursed at, by a coach no less, for slacking off ... my heavens what is the world coming to? Did it make the boy cry?

well, any good coach does not play favorites if they expect to last long. And it seems like the father could have handled this over the phone with Brownell like men, and not out in the open, which leads me to believe something is not above board.

yeah, I ain't got time for that either and find that really really difficult to believe, unless the guy left a belligerent message or something, and Brownell was like, I ain't got time for that. Even then, I have a tough time believing Clemson blew him off if he was simply calling for an apology or something like that.

Coaches at all levels must just love dealing with parents upset that their little darlings aren’t being treated right.

Why would coach discuss a 22 yr old man with a 60 yr old man?

A) I was just answering the question that was posited - why didn’t he call and discuss it? According to the video he made numerous efforts to do so.

B) what age is a parent no longer allowed to care for their child? The student athlete in question is a walk-on player so dad is most likely paying tuition. And as a true sophomore he’s probably just turned 19 and still legally a dependent. Personally I’ve been done with Brownell for years so this video doesn’t really sway anything for me. I’m fairly indifferent to it. We’re getting second hand news from the parent of a child. One party might have reason to lie to make himself look better. The other might have motive to exaggerate out of his anger. But, if I were to believe that any member of the faculty at a school of any level threatened my child’s future welfare I would exhaust every possible avenue available to me to make them regret it.

yes, all Brad had to do is apologize even if he knew he didn't do anything wrong . Just be accountable and make peace and now you don't get a public matter that's escalated. This doesn't sound like the image that Brownell has with the coaching fraternity and media. Bad public relations from the whole AD too. Very disappointing in DRad if he has not responded to the family at all.

How did you turn that story into a simple.cursing story?

100%agree. There are times for both, in my opinion. There are times when you have explained something enough times, patiently, that further explanation must be dealt with with a size 10+++++ boot. Personalities are varied and a true motivator knows when to apply compassion and when to be more rough. I, personally, remember both situations and can attest to both working. When you do something boneheaded, you deserve the aforementioned boot. Unfortunately, there are a lot more prima donnas, twatter (yes, i said it) and media making sports more prissy.
As to BB, if he would just win some dammmmmmmm games during the post season, he wouldnt be in the mess hes in. Is it too much to ask for a friggin acc championship?

Some athletes have become too unbearable today. Seems some want all of the spotlight or I'm going viral. Time to tell it like it is and move on. BB or DRad should have come out and defended what is being said if it is untrue.

Coach Brownell does not have strong relationship with players. All for being tough and demanding, but we are in an era, and rightfully so, that talking to people and demeaning them and being nasty is not fruitful. It’s wrong. Learn to talk and demonstrate self control. If Coach Brownell talks to players like this - he needs to change.

have their pictures over at clemsontigers.com right now...cleaned out everyone else very quickly this year. It usually takes until about October to update these things. I've known Wells since middle school and have seen his shooting be as spot on as anyone can hope for (except BB). I get that he's not a super amazing athlete, but he can definitely outshoot anyone Clemson has put on the floor in the last 11 years. While D.I games are a lot different than H-O-R-S-E, why not give the guy a shot near the half or after a time out? Brownell is just a waste of time & effort to get pissed at anymore.

I remember when Wells came in a game late the season before last and hit two long 3s after just joining the team. He was a 5-A all- state his senior year of HS. I would have liked to seen him more in games.

The problem is there are other coaches that are selfish. They emulate the style of the first coach by giving “tough love” The problem is, there isn’t the love at the end of the day. They only care about what a player can do for them in the moment. There is a spectrum of bad leaders/coaches, as there is a spectrum of good leaders/coaches.

I’m not saying Brownell fits into this category, it’s way to early to tell. The allegations seem to point to a disregard for the person, not the actions of a player.

you don't think O-Max would have started or Trapp even after getting Collins than you don't know the roster well?
It doesn't look good to lose a total 7 players in less than a month and a half..

That's Newman, O-Max, Trapp, decommit Lucas Taylor, a commit who now wants to see what happens before coming the next season Middlebrook, and two decent walk-ons in McBride and Hoag.

Collins is the starter at 3 even with OMax here

he's simply better at this point. The backcourt is Honor and Dawes. Both are upperclassmen now, with far more upside than Trapp.

Which of those 3 are either Trapp or OMax displacing?

I was a manager for the basketball team in 2011 and 2012. I left because I no longer wanted to be around Brad’s toxic culture. He was never verbally abusive towards me, but he was to his players often. The straw that broke the camel’s back for me is when I heard him tell a walk on who was known for his Christian faith, “you should’ve prayed a little harder last night” after the player made a mistake in practice. I am not surprised at all by these allegations and believe them to be 100% true based on my experiences.

I have a similar story of being disrespected. Just 19 years old, a strapping 6'0" 171 lb sophomore, and likely hungover to boot. And that big bad a$$ Coach Danny Ford cuts me in the Sunday brunch buffet line at the Holiday Inn. Well sure, my feathers were ruffled. And I thought about saying something, but Coach had that mean tough-guy smirk on his face. Not to mention Coach looked about 3" taller, 40 lbs heavier, had some kind of chaw in his cheek, and he looked to be hungover as well. Anyway, I didn't like my chances at that moment. Then Coach takes the last of the bacon. Seven gosh darn slices!

My first thought was to have my Dad call the President of the university - seven beautiful looking pieces of bacon snatched right there in front of me - no "excuse me", no "I beg your pardon" - the he.ll with starting with the AD! This grievance needed to be filed at the top! Then I sobered up after three trips through the buffet line and a lot of liquids. And it's a good thing for Coach Ford and the Clemson faithful I kept my cool that morning. I believe we won the National Championship just a few months later.

As for Brownell, I have no skin in the game. But go Tigers!

I had a coach for four years in college who was pretty "rough" and we dreaded those practicesk until we go to the very end relief. He was hard on us and not a very personable man, but he got results. However, he never once used profanity nor had to, nor did anything close to abusive.
