I was just reading TCI's top running back in Clemson history
Jun 21, 2014, 10:58 PM
|
|
article.
1.Spiller 2. James Davis 3. Travis Zachary 4. Raymond Priester 5. Andre Ellington
Let me just say. That is the worst top five I have ever seen. Spiller and Ellington are the only two that could be in that list. First and foremost, forget stats. Just because a guy has stats doesn't mean squat in my book.
IMHO these backs would have to come before anyone on that list except for Spiller....Ronald Williams,Terry Allen,Terrance Flagler,Kenny Flowers. Heck, Zachary would not even be in the 5 deep on THIS team, much less the top 5 of all time.

how can you hate on James Davis being on the list? he was a much better running back than Spiller (spiller is by far the better athlete) and put up massive numbers despite never spending a year as "the guy". he always had his carries split because spiller was there for 3 years and reggie merriweather his freshman year. plus without Davis, Spiller never comes to Clemson

All are Great Clemson backs. Each

Generation has its greats. It's not fair to degrade any former Tiger great just because they were included on a list not to your liking. How great was Banks McFadden. I couldn't tell you. But, he was an All-american drafted fourth, I think. How good was Buddy Gore? I don't know. I've seen everyone since the mid-70s, but it's a tough call. My pick is Terry Allen. Best tailback depth ever, imo, is Kenny Flowers, Terrance Flagler and Joe Henderson.

My father was in school with Banks McFadden. After watching one year of James Davis he stated that JD is the best running back he had ever seen at Clemson. CJSpiller possibly changed his mind on that ... I've not asked.
I like watching good running and I apreciated Spiller, Flagler, Gore, Priester and Davis the most ... no particular order.

ever at Clemson. Had 925 yards as a freshman, but injuries derailed his career. And yes James Davis should be without a doubt one of the top 5 RB's in Clemson history.
My top 5 1. Spiller 2. Allen 3. Davis 4. Terrence Flagler 5. Ellington

records of a tailback. If Ronald Williams could have played under Danny instead of Hatfield, he would have had the records to go with his ability. He was Clemson's Gale Sayers..and I don't use that comparison lightly.

but so was Terry Allen in my opinion. To leave Kevin Mack off of the list shows a distinct bias for stats over greatness.

Travis Zachary had 52 touchdowns. He may be the best receiving RB we have ever had. How do people not put him on the list?

Look at it this way
Jun 24, 2014, 2:48 PM
|
|
I used Spiller total carries of 606 as the base and done the math to calculate at 606 carries how many yards the backs would of had based on their YPC. Spiller would still be first followed by Ellington and then Allen. Davis moves down to the fourth spot since he had over a 100 more carries than spiller and Ellington and Flowers would take up the final spot.
Now stats aside I think Allen would be #1 followed by Spiller and Ellington close behind. Spiller was great but Ellington may have actually been a better back. Their stats are almost identical in terms of rushing but Spiller was more dynamic of a player in terms of receiving and returns.

One problem with that analysis
Jun 24, 2014, 3:06 PM
|
|
This may just be conjecture but I believe that it's easier to gain large chunks of yards in our current offense than it would have been in the option offense that we ran in the past. Allen, Flowers etc... might have been able to break off more long runs if they weren't being met right at the line of scrimmage by opposing defenses who had no idea what play would be coming.

Agree but there is really no way to factor that in other than just by opinion. Even though Allen played in a different offense he still averaged 5.7YPC only passed by Spiller at 5.9 so Allen had plenty of decent gains even in a different style of offense.

including Fred Cone. There were a ton of those single wing guys who could get it done. Billy Hair, Jackie Calvert, Don King, Bobby Gage and several others. There have been many in the more modern era. In my opinion there has been Terry Allen and then all the rest. Spiller was the overall best offensive weapon. A healthy Allen was like a man among boys. The defense knew he was going to get the ball and still could not stop him with the lines he had.

I completely disagree with you guys on Zachary. He was a fantastic receiving back. He had 52 career TDs. We had very few other weapons when Zachary was around. Dantzler was there at the end of his career, but as far as threats outside of Zachary, all you had was Gardner outside of good QBs(Streeter/Dantzler). We weren't nearly as talented as we are now and he put up big numbers. As far as a straight up running back, there have been a lot better, but when you factor in how great of a receiving threat and scoring threat he was, he is in the top 10.

you would say. I played fullback and wanted #36 so bad I could taste it. Well, at the end of practice, when they gave out our game jersey's before the first game, I was devastated when I got #34!!
My dad picked me up right after practice and I sadly showed him my jersey. To my amazement, my dad said," Guess what, Yauger changed his number to #34 this year...". Man, what a great feeling that was!! I've been a full fledged Tiger ever since....

Points to anyone who remembers him. Not in top 15, tho.
Anyway, I'd trend Allen, Davis, and Flagler higher than most of what I read here. Zachary way lower.
