My knee-jerk interpretation of Jim Phillips comments.

1. I understand that there is a huge financial difference between ACC and the other two conferences. 2. I am trying do find a way to significantly reduce that deficit. 3. I understand that if the deficit is not significantly reduced the ACC, if it even exists, will not be able to compete with those two conferences. 4. As I am trying to figure out a way to reduce that deficit everything is on the table. 5. I am a realist. I have a Plan B, Plan C, Plan D and so on as to what will happen to the ACC if we cannot reduce that financial deficit. 6. And, no, I'm not gonna tell you about any of the specifics at this time.

Just give us plan B and let it soak in and then spoon feed us D and C in parts.

That gave me no confidence they have any ideas for how to keep the conference competitive. Staying grouped in with these people is pretty much suicide.

Agreed, sad to say. We will end up looking like Memphis, Cincy and UCF ten years ago (if we're lucky) but with more potential to be competitive in the end, at least for now. What I mean is that the ACC is in real danger of being relegated to Group of Five status, even though we have more storied schools in our league than they. Perception is often reality and when we stop being invited to the dance (as it's defined by the SEC and the Big Ten) because of our associations, that is gonna negatively impact our ability to draw talent the way we have. No more big games means no more big recruits, because who would be excited to play in the Birmingham Bowl other than South Carolina and Rutgers? ####, those guys are in the SEC and BIG 10. See...it's worse than I thought.
If we are not careful, before long, we will be playing Cornell, SE Wyoming or the Woodruff Rd. Kroger Night Shift on ESPN 8, the "Ocho" for the "Best of the Worst Cup". Pardon the histrionics and extreme hyperbole, but you get my point.

The ACC is a sinking ship...the problem is that it happens be a submarine and we're all inside. There are no escape hatches. Clemson football will not survive at a $70M disadvantage year after year. At some point in time, that gap will absolutely catch up to us and it will catch up to the conference. In time, going 12-0 in the ACC will be akin to going undefeated in the Mountain West, Conference USA, or the MAC. The difference is that it won't be a feel good story-- it'll be a joke.

He knows and understands the issues but has no idea what to do about them. Frankly, I think the options are fairly limited and he knows that too.

If the ACC is planning to add teams...

I could like with WVU if the brought Texas Tech, Baylor, and Oklahoma State with them. That makes more sense than adding teams like Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis, and UCF.

In the financial disparity with the BIG and SEC? I just dont see it. There is no point in adding teams just to add teams. Hell, Id rather cut dead weight than add it.

which is why the best option for teams like FSU, Miami, UNC and Clemson is to work collectively on finding a way to get out.

Unfortunately, I believe it requires six teams leaving to disband the conference in order to void the TV contract and I'm not sure there are two other brands that could find a good home elsewhere. Syracuse may provide an untapped market addition for the Big 12, but they are so new to the league after the Big East's demise that I doubt they would have the guts. Va Tech seems the only obvious choice, but they are so far removed from greatness, the draw may be questionable. And when did Virginia become a hot brand? And are they, seriously? Louisville kind of reminds me a lot of Cincy, but they are right on top of Cincy market-wise, so where do they go if the Big 12 is already good in that part of the country? Is it Pitt? I guess, but they're kind of right there too, so what TV market do they have that means much? Plus, not to be mean, but they don't have their own stadium, so I would surmise that Pittsburgh is purely a Steeler's town, so does anyone there really care?
I will be honest, we have nothing to give as far as TV markets go. UGA and SC are right next door, so all we really have to give to the SEC is quality football (and other sports) and a bunch of rabid Taters that travel well, which they will find is far better than a bunch of whinny Coots, but anyway.
