Yesterday was not good at the Marion household...
Aug 19, 2022, 8:23 AM
|

My sister and her family came into town from out of state, but not for a vacation. You see, my sister is heavily involved in wildlife rescue, and has been for many years. Typically they keep animals that have been injured or are sick for a few weeks-months until the animal is rehabbed, then release them back into the wild. Sometimes, for various reasons, these animals aren't fit to ever be released, and must be cared for by volunteers their entire lives. That was the case with one such animal, "Patches", he has alopecia, the possum. Found 4 years ago, Patches was sent to live with my sister by a rescue group in Florida. Patches, however, stood no chance of ever being released due to ongoing medical issues. In fact, Patches condition was so bad, euthanization was considered. My 5 year old niece, however, was having none of it. She had grown attached to Patches, so the family decided to keep him.
Fast forward to this week. The family flew Patches to SC for a life saving surgery. This surgery cost nearly $2,500.00, but again, my now 9 year old niece loves Patches, so my sister will spare no expense. The good news, the surgery was a success! Patches is expected to make a full recovery. The bad news, Patches escaped when my brother in law set the crate down in the driveway to go unlock the front door of the house!
I don't feel comfortable naming the community I live in, but it's pretty exclusive. Golf course, no guns allowed, etc... you get the picture. So if anyone is in a community like this and sees a semi hairless possum trying to get into houses, he "knocks" on the door by bumping into it when he's ready to come in, it's probably Patches. He should be easy to catch as he was still under anesthesia when he escaped and was having trouble walking. If you get close to him he'll stop, and look up at you, wanting to be picked up. It's completely safe to do so.
I know it's a long shot, but if found, please give him some food, he eats Fancy Feast, and tmale me, it would mean a lot.

Hopefully all of that "bumping into doors" will help him survive blunt force trauma, if someone were to say violently overreact to an encounter with Patches. Out of curiosity, are the bald areas more sebaceous than the hairy ones?

somebody hijacked my TNet account yesterday morning, and wrote up some nonsensical story about a semi-hairless possum spinning circles in our neighborhood, and eventually being euthanized with a couple fairway licks from a "bad Luck" Number 13 wood golf club. Or at least I figured the story was made up, until you posted about Little Patches being missing. What are the odds of a coincidence like that?

Opossums do not carry rabies. It is a common myth that they do, but opossums' body temperature is slightly lower than that of other mammals, and so the rabies virus cannot take hold.

First, RIP Patches. A memorial golf tournament in Patches honor would be a good way to help your sister's rescue. Just overlook the irony.

I know a bunch of good old boys up around old hundred in Greenville area and they make possum stew. If you live close to there and they find patches, the end will come for him.

I am certain 76er® or any of our dedicated group would open their home or at least a dog house to Patches who seems to be relatively harmless when you overlook the 9-10 potentially deadly diseases possums can carry. Live and let live. BTW, is your niece cross-eyed or sometimes foaming at the mouth?

All this hullabaloo is unnecessary. It is well documented in the famous “Patches” ballad, when Patches Papa died he tried to quit school and his mama told him, “No, that was Papa’s strictest rule”.
Patches has simply gone off to college, I’m sure he’ll write, once he gets settled.

I read the other day that when possoms are happy they like to walk around in tight circles and actually are not afraid of humans ..... especially if they have been adopted by a family and cared for. If they appear wobbly, it is because just like humans, they become dizzy from walking around in the tight circles. Hopefully, any caring person would know not to mess with a possom in its natural habitat, especially in a nice golf community where possoms thrive.
