Matt Corral & opt outs

So the announcers are saying basically that maybe he should've opted out and avoided this injury. Will he really drop in the draft because he got injured playing with his team in the bowl game? Will it really cost him any significant money? Is it the assumption that the NFL won't value loyalty and would rather have a guy who opts out so he can make more money - self > team?
I'm just some pudknocker sitting on the couch watching football on TV, but I'm thinking the scouts will look at the many games he's played and not just this injury. I think he'll do just fine in the draft and on the NFL.

assuming so since you can tell he has been crying his eyes out) then yes it will effect him as no team is going to draft a qb high first round and probably not til 2nd or 3rd at the earliest if he’s not able to see the field next year. The only exception might be a team that has extra picks early or has a veteran they know is retiring in the next year or 2

Maybe, but it didn’t hurt Tua’s stock so there’s precedent that if teams are high on a guy as long as it’s not career threatening they’ll still draft him high

Just falling from the 5th to the 10th overall pick will roughly cost you 10 million over the length of the rookie contract.

Corral was never going to be a Top 10 Pick.

He was cleared to play by July - the Dolphins knew how his progress was tracking. He was a more known quantity prior to injury also. Dolphins had 3 first round and 2 2nd round picks that year. Maybe Corals injury is not as serious as we think - maybe it’s just a fracture that requires a pin and 8 weeks, we’ll see but if it’s something where the timeframe is like 9 mos or a year then expect it to impact him. It would probably changes him from being the 1-3 qb taken to 3-5

Yes, something very serious will lower is stock (1) wouldn't go through the predradt process so some unknowns, (2) not being 100% for 2022 season and (3) not everyone comes back 100%.

I bet if he was asked, he'd say he'd make the decision to play again, and he's such a competitor, Is believe him.

I have heard where NFL executives say that not opting out because he didn't want to let his team down gets him an automatic A in the Character and Competitive grades.
Those are not always the most important grades, but they are never unimportant.
So you can possibly say his injury cost him 2 million or 10 million, but his Character and Competitiveness that forced him to play will be what earns him 60- 200 million.

Yeah it's like nowadays if you're a player of his caliber there are some who shame you for playing & in his case with getting hurt that is all he is going to hear from the media hacks....It is like they try to use peer pressure.
When he is healed I would take him & start him over Baker Mayfield tomorrow

As a Carolina Panthers fan - I would start him over anybody on our roster as soon as he's healthy! I would live through the rookie mistakes.
And, he was not going to be a 1st round QB at no point. He would have had an amazing pro-day and did well in testing or something for that to happen.

Depends what the injury is and how severe. Yeah it could cost him. As a QB he should be fine though. I could see why players opt out though that play other positions. A torn ACL for a CB would crush draft status and they would lose big time.

Nfl doesn't value loyalty at all. If they could I'm sure they wouldn't want any of their top draft picks playing in games they don't have to. Corral lost a lot of money and probably at best is now a 3rd round pick.

Where are you guys getting that he is a 1st Round Lock? Before last night, a lot of pro Scouts had him going in the 2nd or 3rd Rounds.

OP - most of the time Quarterbacks pretty much sit their first year "anyway"! The idea that an NFL team would pass on him solely based on this injury is ludicrous. NFL players get signed all the time that had an injury(Stephon Gilmore was signed by the Panthers coming off of IR with a Quad injury - he is an All-Pro caliber CB).
What others have said "IS TRUE" though. He will be the poster child for "not playing"! But, let's say you ARE in the CFP - and you get hurt! The whole, "I was playing for something" still will cost you money! It still has the same impact! Villinizing a non-playoff bowl game in my opinion is unfair; because it could have happened the last regular-season game or game 4 of the season as well. On any play during a football game, you can be hurt. Whether that football game is "in the playoffs" or not is irrelevent. Hurt is hurt and hurt draft stock is hurt draft stock!
In short, when does it end? I want people saying the same thing about any players who have gotten hurt during a non-playoff game - to be consistent and say it if a high draft pick is injured during a playoff bowl game! Because as I said, once the dust settles, "it was still a game you didn't have to play in order to get ready for your NFL future"! As the NFL doesn't give you more money if you win that CFP bowl game does it? They don't go - hey since you're in the playoffs your contract will be "THIS"!
He will be made a poster child for not playing OP. But, watch over the next couple months how many players have training injuries! Seems to me a lot of injuries now are non-contact. I.E. injuries that can happen even during training! Watch and see! I am book marking this post!

I am against opt-outs. I am against a lot of things that are allowed or legal, not just in college football but in life too. Just because something is allowed and you can do it, doesn't mean that you should. Wearing a colleges uniform is a privilege, especially at Power 5 schools. The other 98% of HS players that wished they could have gone to Division 1 are wishing they were in your shoes to strap it up for a major college football game. If I were a GM, which I am not and will likely never be, I would never draft or sign a player that opted out. Commitment means something. Something I love about our Tigers is that they are taught to value commitment and we did not have any opt-outs this year. Have the Tigers had an opt out in a bowl game? We have been in major bowls since this all started so I doubt it. College recruiters probably feel the same way.
I wonder what the trickle-down effect is to HS players not wanting to get hurt before their mid year enrollment - I'm thinking of kids like Bryton Constantin that lost out on his college career after getting hurt in the hunt for another state title for his HS.

It’s why higher profile players have insurance. Did he have insurance? I don’t know.

True.
That's probably the best development since this whole "opt out" wave began--players used to have to pay for their own insurance premiums, but now the NCAA allows schools to pay for them.
However, let's not overstate the compensation a hurt player gets for getting injured. The value of a player's health is based on his pre-injury draft stock, so if he is considered a 2nd-3rd rounder before his injury, his health is valued about the last pick of Round #2 because that's the average.
If, due to his injury, his value slid to the 6th round (for example), his insurance should pay the difference between his 6th round contract and the average 2nd-3rd round contract.
The top 16 players (as much as I respect Corral, he isn't one) can never be compensated fairly by an insurance policy because they are above the highest average available. Those players cannot count on insurance to make up a financial difference for them if they get hurt. They must trust in modern medicine to restore their ability to earn it.
