"Let all the names on this field on this one night sink in: Rod Carew, Brooks Robinson, Luis Aparicio, Frank Robinson, Carl Yastrzemski, Reggie Jackson, Al Kaline, Harmon Killebrew, Jim Palmer, Johnny Bench, Willie McCovey, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Willie Stargell, Lou Brock, Ron Santo, Tom Seaver, Steve Carlton, Ferguson Jenkins, Juan Marichal and Roberto Clemente, who would sadly be there for the final time. The managers, the Orioles' Earl Weaver and the Reds' Sparky Anderson, are also in the Hall of Fame."
Great article, good memories. Back when I really loved beisbol...

Baseball was incredible back then! The Braves weren’t much but the Pirates and Orioles ruled!

I have fond memories of watching this game as a 10 year old with my grandfather (who was born in 1895). Reggie Jackson hit a HR that landed in the transformers on the roof of Tiger Stadium. The game was called by my favorite sportscaster Curt Gowdy and we watched on a 19 inch black and white TV with rabbit ears

baseball back then, I was 9 in '71. My dad took me to several Dodger games every year, I played little league had many baseball cards, (still have my collection worth 10s of dollars for sure) I think I have most every card from 1969 to 1972, and followed the sport like crazy and definitely remember that all star game.

MLB has no appeal to me and hasn't for years, but man back then I LOVED it. I have great memories of being in the stands in Atlanta Fulton County Stadium for the '72 All-Star game. I was an Orioles fan and getting to see Brooks(the Vacuum Cleaner) Robinson at 3rd and Jim Palmer on the mound was awesome. Bobby Grich also started at SS.
I don't know where they went wrong, but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back.

The '71 Orioles were an incredibly talented team. They had 4 20 game winners in Jim Palmer, Mike Cuellar, Dave McNally and Pat Dobson and 4 Gold Glove players Brooks Robinson at 3rd, Mark Belanger at SS, Dave Johnson at 2nd and Paul Blair at CF. That's ridiculous. However, The Pirates won it all.
Blair was like a gazelle--so graceful. Robinson had incredible reflexes. Good times!

Same here. Haven’t watched a MLB game since the steroid years. That’s when it started for me. 50s, 60s and 70s were very memorable. Have that same feeling for college football and basketball now. Started a couple of years ago when the stipends began. It will be history for me after this season or next. Hate that it’s happening!
