Last night was proof that...

Jan 2, 2021, 11:03 AM

Tony Elliott is worth every penny.

THIS IS NOT AN ANTI STREETER POST.

Absolutely! Many on here, myself included did not appreciate his play calling ability. I think that question has been answered and Streeter needs more experience. (Not Streeter bashing because he has been vital to QB development)

Absolutely not meant to be a knock on Streeter...

Jan 2, 2021, 11:12 AM

Just a complement for Elliott.

Elliot was assistant coach of the year for a reason. That said, Streeter will be a fine OC. Sure he's been "in training" for this eventuality all year, but we know that the cohesiveness isn't there. Just like DJ will be a fantastic QB for us for the next couple years, but we just weren't quite ready for ND. All that said, I put this more on the defense than offense. TL had 400 yards and we would have had at least a couple of field goals if the secondary didn't turn into swiss cheese.

This loss sucked, and I'm having a very hard time deciding who I want to lose the title more right now.

My understanding is that Streeter called all the plays that were successful, and Swinney called all the ones that got stopped behind the LOS.

I’ve never bashed TE but I thought Streeter did a good job of a balanced attack last night.

The OP is not an inditement of Streeter.

that helped OSU get the 21 point lead. Sustain a couple of drives and score on one its at worst a 7 point deficit. Lots of blame to go around.

I would ignore judge smails, he does not understand the football or how a running game is your best defense.

TE's play calling squeezed 25 points out against LSU last year. Brandon got 28 last night. The same result.

Don't know exact stats but I don't recall more than a couple of "stretching the field plays" where TL threw over 20 yards ?

He would barely be into his dropback before he would have to start evading people in the backfield.

couldn’t run on them. Second drive TL missed a wide open Allen for a TD. He was pressured on thrat throw but should have made it. 14-0 would have been huge.

This! Exactly, while Fields had much better protection for what seemed like all night long. We just got whipped. What I hope is we see where our weaknesses are (and I don't think there are too many to fix) and get them taken care of. Do that, and we are pretty much unstoppable. KMO

The second quarter was where it went awry. 3 and outs and the defense got gassed. Osu capitalized and was flying around after what I assumed were TE first scripted plays. I’m certainly not in the know but just mho. They out played us in the end. Tip your hat and I’m thankful to have at least had a season! Already ready for spring ball!

Also looks like we have a pretty good basketball team! Blue moon looking forward to a basketball season!

This. I have not been enamored so much by TE's play calling at times, but I believe he has done a very good job of running plays to analyze how the other team reacts, and then calling plays that exploit their tendencies. He's been very good at it. That said, and as I've said before, it's the Jimmies and Joes, and not the X's and O's, that make the difference most games, and last night was no exception. Their guys whipped our guys, plain and simple. Their game plan helped them to be successful, but they succeeded at will in pretty much every phase of the game last night. I don't think TE was the reason we lost, but not having him surely didn't help us. Hats off to OSU, though. They were tremendous last night.

I agree that TE is worth every penny, but think that Streeter was somewhat hamstrung by our defense. When it turned into a shootout, I think it limited the playbook to an extent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Last night was proof that...

Jan 2, 2021, 1:04 PM

The offense went for over 440 yards - only 40 of it was running the ball. What do you want Street to do, come down and block for ETN.

Last night had nothing to do with the play caller. It had to do with the O-Line getting beat consistently. When that happens, no amount of play-calling is going to overcome that.

BTW, We scored 28 points this year and lost. We scored 29 points last year and won. It seems to me that perhaps the defense should shoulder most of the responsibility.

Francis,

How can TE be worth every penny of his large contract unless he is significantly better than Streeter.

Streeter called a game last night in which we threw for 400 yards. What is it that the OP thinks TE would have done (to be worth those big bucks) that Streeter did not do ?

I am not trying to set TE vs BS, but last night's defeat had NOTHING to do with the play calling.

Tony Elliott is worth every penny.

THIS IS NOT AN ANTI STREETER POST.

While I agree with your sentiment about TE being worth every penny...I did not see any huge difference in the okay calling...only thing I questioned from that regard was running the QB counter to the left several times in the 3rd and 4th arts when none worked...

Offense was good enough to win last night! Defense was as bad as I’ve ever seen under Venables...it was the worst we’ve seen at Clemson since the WVU game...we looked clueless at EVERYTHING!!!

They were able to run with the RB
They were able to run with The QB
They threw short...they threw long
They threw to RB’s
They threw to TE’s
They threw to WR’s

We literally stopped nothing at all

The only thing left for them to beat us on as an offense was it they would have thrown it back to the QB one time or let a tackle eligible make a catch or a lineman run on a rooskie...that’s it...everything else they did on us and did very well!!!

We are not used to this under our current staff and players but it happened!!! It was pretty #### impressive on their part as much as I hate them!!!

Always liked Elliot

I didn’t really have a problem with offensive play calling for the most part. It was the offensive line and defense that just could not get it done. Hate it for BV but we’ve seen signs of lackluster play earlier in the year. Plenty of good in this team but wasn’t great when it counted. We will be back and win another Natty I feel sure.
