Keep underestimating Graham Neff if you wish.

But the guy is a winner. He has a tough job to do, and thus far, I think he's done a great job.

I suggest we support him.

Jun 17, 2022, 11:50 AM

I've always said that we need to support the basketball program better, not only to give our current coaching staff what they need, but to also show future coaches that we are serious about basketball at Clemson.

I'm very pleased at the commitment Neff is making to Clemson basketball. They seem to be aligned with his goals for the program. These are all great things for Clemson basketball, which is where my devotion lies - not with Coach Brownell.

I hope Brad can keep his job here. I believe he will. But if not, there are advantages to moving on to a new coach and I believe Neff has put us in a much better position to make a great hire.

How do you suppose Brad keeps his job? He literally CANNOT win in the ACC!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad has shown that he can win in the ACC.

Jun 17, 2022, 12:06 PM

The issue is doing so more consistently.

If you follow ACC basketball, you know that virtually all teams are wildly inconsistent. Even the blue bloods have had seasons recently where they did not make the NCAA Tournament.

It's unfair to expect Brad or anyone else at Clemson to be consistently successful in men's basketball given our traditionally poor support of the program.

This is one of the least logical things you've ever said.

Jun 17, 2022, 12:27 PM

So winning in the ACC could mean he beat UNC once when they were really bad. Or it could mean he legitimately beat some good teams. But I don't think any of us are interested in winning a game. He absolutely has shown no consistency. You can't really separate he can win in the ACC from consistency. In fact, he has not shown that he can win in the ACC. He wins against all the scrub non-ACC teams and even some non-scrub ones, you get all excited tell us its gonna be the best year yet, and then we win less than .500 in the ACC, consistently. Maybe we should give him longer, we only have a 12 year track record so far to look at.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What I said is completely logical.

Jun 17, 2022, 4:08 PM

The previous poster made it sound like Brad has never had success in the ACC. That’s ridiculous, as we have had some top 5 ACC finishes but also some disappointing finishes.

So Brad has had success, just not sustained success. He’s done better than any other coach we’ve had in ACC play, that is if you care about things like our record against ACC teams.

Asking for consistency at Clemson, in basketball, doesn’t sound like much to ask for - until you look around. All of the ACC blue bloods have missed the NCAA Tournament recently. Their casual fans are probably whining about a lack of consistency too.

If you are ready to move on from Brad, that’s certainly your right. But don’t make up things to support your point.

The recent extension Brownell was given made the buyout too hard to swallow right now. In another year, it is considerably less. If we don't make the big dance next year I really do believe Neff will move on from Brownell just like he did with Lee. I also don't think the crop of available coaches was as good this year and hope the pool will be a little deeper next year but that is pure speculation on my part.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree 100% about Neff

Jun 17, 2022, 1:46 PM [ in reply to If he decides to move on from Brad I will support him. ]

But Brad Brownell has had more to work with than any Clemson basketball coach in history.

Best facilities we’ve ever had and the ACC about as weak as it has ever been and the NCAA tournament easier than ever to get into.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where do I start?

Jun 17, 2022, 4:11 PM

The expanded ACC makes it harder to get into the Big Dance, not easier. In the past, you played fewer ACC games each year and played every team twice. And the mid-majors weren’t nearly the factor than they are now.

Please stop with the weak ACC nonsense. This year’s NCAA Tournament is proof that the ACC is anything but weak.

Looking at our returning players we would likely finish a few games over 500 at the very worst. Neff has enough confidence in CBB that he is willing to invest in the program which has started just a few months ago. So what rational would you use to think Neff Will fire CBB before the investment has had a chance to work outside of a losing season which is a super low probability?

Re: Oh, Deer. I suspect you may be juggling a different tune

Jun 17, 2022, 2:59 PM

LOL. Because 13 years tells enough of a tale as to what a coach can and cannot deliver, and at some point you have to stop throwing good money after bad? Considering how supposedly meaningless the $65 Million LJ renovation was, that Brad helped orchestrate, why would admin want to travel down that path yet again? You folks kill me.

Having said that, based on Brad's impeccable timing to deliver best when his gravy train is most threatened, I'm counting on a very decent regular season ahead from our boys. Just hoping we don't up the buyout or do anything that would allow Brad to slip back into his comfort zone afterwards.

Go Tigers.

Me giving my opinion the other day about our baseball hire

Jun 17, 2022, 4:16 PM [ in reply to “I don’t understand…” JK 06/14/2022 ]

before that hire was made was not me questioning Neff. At that time, we had no idea who the coach would be or what we would pay him.

Bakich will make $850,000 next season, so my comment about not wanting to spend $1 million on a new baseball coach is consistent with what Neff did. So I don’t have a problem with what Neff did. Even if I disagreed, I would still support him.

You really shouldn’t let my posts bother you so much.

consistent with your thinking was $150,000.00.

"Why not spend the $500,000 we have been spending, and apply that additional $500,000 a year toward a need-based scholarship fund to offset the tuition costs for out of state baseball players?" - JK

Should we not be spending the same $500K we've been spending and apply the additional $350k (instead of $500k) per year toward a need-based scholarship fund? Or is it now ok to give the coach the full $850K?

And I'm still not sure why you keep bringing up the support thing? When did I say that? You just questioned our new AD's judgment, two entirely different things.

Nobody with any awareness of what an AD's job is about underestimates Neff. The Clemson Athletic Department is a huge, multimillion dollar business and hiring coaches, other than football, is a small part of the job. From listening to Neff at the Prowl and Growl in Greenwood, I am impressed at his knowledge and he will do a great job.
