a cancer that has to be cut out asap. This was not just a stupid mistake, though stupid it was. This was scu and notre dame type stuff. Cut it out now, or deal with it later. The other players will step up if we do, will slack off if we dont. We should treat him like a third string guard.

If my son did this he would be done for the year; no tuition, no car, a minimum wage job to get his head on straight. Same here.

Send him home, or bail out two other guys in a few months. A quality program cant put up with this crap.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Weird you quoted me as saying "let it go" when i never once

May 4, 2012, 11:38 PM

wrote those words. In fact, I never even offered a solution.

You say "Lots of people get drunk and drive cars too, and the ones who get caught lose jobs, homes, elections and careers over it., as they ought to."

Well yeah that's true but that crime is also a felony. I don't know a lot of people charged with simple possession that have suffered the same fate.

Going back to what I originally responded to you, I think you are naive to the number of people that smoke pot on this team. Are you trying to say forget about everyone who is doing it and just have zero tolerance on the ones that get caught?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

think none is warranted, say so.

To say that everyone is doing it is a false argument on a number of counts. Statistics are that less than 10% of the general population are regualar users, not that much higher for the student population. But at 20%, of 85 athletes you are talking 15 people, but we can and should expect better from them. So no, not all are like Oregon and TCU.

But what if 50% were? No matter. I would expect more from a son for whom I was paying tuition, room ane board.

Again, I think you are naive with the numbers

May 5, 2012, 12:10 AM

Time magazine has stated that 54% of people by age 21 have smoked pot. The national institute on drug abuse says 42% of 12th graders have used pot. http://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/infofacts/marijuana

When I was in college in the late 90's pot use was very high. I have a younger brother in it now that says seeing it is as common as cigarettes.

What you do with you son is your business, but you started this topic talking about what to do with Sammy, not him.

In NC or Missisippi, first offense simple possession is not a criminal offense at all - it is a civil fine like an equipment violation (brake light out).

if it were me, I would suspend him for the first couple of fall practices and bench him for the first quarter of the Auburn game. I suspect Dabo will take a harder line and suspend him for two games.

May 5, 2012, 1:38 AM

Bellamy was a problem all year and had been in trouble for other things before being sent home. His first offence had the punishment of sitting out the first half of a game.

So your original suggestion of sending Sammy home seems a little over the top.

As for the punishment, I would bench him for the first quarter (or first half) and double whatever community service he is given by the judge.

May 4, 2012, 11:18 PM

Believe it or not, Sammy isnt the only player on the team smoking pot. If Clemson or any BCS school sent players home for smoking pot there would be no college football. The worst thing is the pills. Granted they appear to be pills to concentrate during exam time but he still didnt have a prescription for them.

than "maryjane" - who says Maryjane, anyway? Are you 90 years old or something? My 82 year old father ( a Korean War vet and retired high school principal) calls it weed...

This isn't just my opinion. The law agrees: simple possession of marijuana (1st Offense) - 30 days or $200.00; unlawful possession of controlled substance (adderol) - 6 months or $500.00. Also: the weed charge can be conditionally discharged (stay out of trouble for 90 days and case dismissed), the adderol charge cannot. The weed charge is exactly the same gravity as underage possession of alcohol and much, much less serious than DUI (first offense). So, welcome to the 21st Century, old fart...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here ya go:

May 5, 2012, 12:59 AM

The University, through the Office of Community and Ethical Standards (OCES), will impose disciplinary sanctions on students who violate the above standards of conduct. The severity of the imposed sanctions will be appropriate to the violation. The disciplinary sanctions that may be imposed include but are not limited to: admonition, censure, probation, restriction of privileges, eviction from University housing, suspension, expulsion and referral for prosecution. In addition to the disciplinary sanctions, students may be referred to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for assessment and follow-up.

First offense simple possession of marijuana? I'd say a civilian student is looking at admonition and an assessment at CAPS. Second offense and you are likely looking at probation and eviction from university housing. Nobody is getting "sent home" for 1st offense simple possession of weed.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You do what you want to with your kid.

May 4, 2012, 11:36 PM

You are accountable, responsible and have authority. You don't make those decisions for other's children. Sammy's mama trusted Dabo and I would trust him with either of my sons too.

I might not trust him with one of my 5 beautiful daughters though. Oh yeah, he can have my ex. :)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

:) Which is why Dabo is going to drop the hammer, IMO.

May 5, 2012, 12:12 AM

And I do know my position is unpopular. I didnt go to Bob Jones, I drink socially, sometimes too much, I dont think abortion is the end of the world and yes I know kids smoke pot. Geez, you think I wast there?

But I'm not holding Sammy to a higher standard. If I was a scholarship athlete i would sneek girls onto the dorm, cut class, stay up after curfue and drink on nights off. Human stuff. But drive around with a baggie on the seat with me, with my buddy smoking like a chimney? Not ever.

Look, you were in the dorm. You knew who smoked and who didnt. No generalization is 100%, but that marked the good ones from the bad ones as clearly as anything. I am NOT saying Sammy is a bad one; people make mistakes. Bud you have to weed it out, pun intended, and to not deal with this as if he were a third stringer would be a mistake, imo.

Send him home? I wish CU could give him the chair.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A couple points:

May 4, 2012, 11:50 PM

I read the police report and it was never mentioned Sammy had glassy eyes or anything associated with smoking pot, just that it was in his possession. And if you knew how prevalent adderall is on campus around exam time, then you'd have a change of tune. I'd say at least 30% of the student body had it sometime this week. He broke the law and will be punished accordingly. But what he did is not akin to DUI or worse than that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That does not make it right because others are doing it.

May 5, 2012, 9:45 AM

This is a bad excuse. "well Johnny is doing it to". You guys sound like 5 year olds. Weed is an illegal drug. That simple. And having those other pills on top of it is just stupid. Quit making excuses for the guy, let the punishment happen and it is what it is. I played college football and you can tell who the ones on the team that smoked were. It does effect you and it is not a harmless drug like you guys want to make it out to be. He will be back by no later than the 4th game and maybe after the first, so it will be fine. He seems like a good kid and hopefully he can stay away from this stuff, but I have seen so many people that can not stop smoking. We will see.

Re: I hate to say it, but I would send Sammy home. Maryjane is a

May 5, 2012, 12:03 AM

No offense, but that is the worst idea I have heard yet about the situation. I bet you think public intox should be punished with a 20 year prison sentence. Or perhaps jaywalkers should get 3 - 5 years.

It is bad enough that the NCAA and NFL collude to keep young men like Sammy Watkins from a making a living with their 3 year rule, but now you think that a person who makes one mistake, one the many Presidents including the one sitting today have also made, should be kicked out of school? If he was in CA, he would have gotten a ticket and been sent on his way.

People make mistakes and your idea of locking them up and throwing away the key is a terrible one. Our prisons are overcrowded because holier than thou people such as yourself are obsessed with punishing people for non-violent offenses.

Give him a two game suspension and make sure that he realizes that NFL teams don't like people who make a habit of smoking marijuana and I bet he shapes up. Throw him out of school and you likely ruin his life over something that should be legal and in 10 years probably will be.

May 5, 2012, 12:46 AM

Given that up to this point Sammy Watkins has been a model citizen and student who has done 1000 things right and made this one mistake, sending him home is way too harsh and doesn't do him or anyone else any good. Zero tolerance for a second offense ad suspension for the Auburn game is the proper course here....

Have you heard the recent statistics on Marijuana use

May 5, 2012, 9:41 AM

amoung today's youth? Marijuana use is most certainly on the rise. This is not an isolated incident. We have had several players in the past 10 years in trouble for weed. It seems the herb is making a comeback with today's youth.

You have to wonder about Clemson's drug testing program for athletes. No way this is the first time he has smoked pot. 1st time users are a lot more cautious and paranoid about being caught. He obviously had a level of comfort with the drug.

Is the most harmless drug on the planet.

Still has never ever ever been responsible for the death of anyone ever in the history of the planet whereas alcohol kills more people than any and all other drugs combined and we are fine with it.

He should maybe be suspended for the Furman game and we should definitely get a new police chief.

How in the world does a university police officer not know who Sammy Watkins is? Is he a coot or what?

That's a Standard procedure, confiscate the contraband, drive him home, call Dabo and handle it internally... Not make it front page news. I guess i never accused any officer of actually having a brain though. Cops are completely useless.
