taking good angles, etc. I am cautiously optimistic about our defense this season.

I was cautiously optimistic about our Offense last season. Hope it turns out the same.

I hope it turns out with a different outcome. I'd rather us start off with a few growing pains and but finishing the season strong rather than get our hopes up and then fizzle at the end like last year. We have a lot of youth again which hopefully means they can learn what Venables is trying to teach them about the angles and wrapping up instead of just hitting. I am definitely optimistic about how our guys will develop and learn the new, simplified system.

our offense fizzled last season? Wasn't aware of that.

Honestly, yeah it kinda did

Jun 6, 2012, 4:20 PM

we had our moments against VT but watching our offense against SCar and NCSt and even the majority of the Wake game. I'm hoping for more consistency and I believe Morris will do even better with a year under his belt

Sammy was hurt most of Wake and Ncstate and maybe even SC That can take away rythem. And SC our OL stunk. Our Offense was great last season considering.

The offense was pretty average after the 8-0 start. We looked good against VT and in the first quarter against WVU, but that's about it.

I agree with feller^^^ I'd much rather start out slow and finish strong than vice versa. Given what we've been through the past 10 years, I figure most people would agree with that assessment.

Me too man... Williams and Watkins at DT gonna bulldoze.***

Looks good...I saw a lot of blitzing there, which kind of goes against what I had heard about Venables; defenses. I heard it was more of a "make 'em earn it" type of Defense with more zone, vs. what I saw in that video which was a good bit of blitzing with more man coverage. I do think his scheme is much simpler than what Steele was trying to run, and our secondary should benefit from that, as it seemed they weren't on the same page most of the time last year. Constantly signaling back and forth right up to the snap of the ball and then arguing with each other after we just had a bomb throw over our heads. Regardless I'm excited to see what he does as the LB coach with the stable of good LB recruits we've gotten. Should be fun. If the OL shows up, we should be h3LL for the forseeable future. Go Tigers!

venables was really good on third down last year and made teams earn their points. However, they did struggle getting teams off the field and were only marginally better than us in total YPP.

I am hopeful in that they had back to back wins over FSU and were able to hold their Pro-set offense in check both games. I am curious to see what he dials up against GT, anything would be better than what we saw last year, I am still embarrassed for our D in that game. Johnson ate our lunch and Steele never realized they were keying off Brandon Thompson until 3 weeks after the game was over when their players bragged about it in the media.

GT wasn't the only game we had our lunch eaten. UNC carved us up pretty good. Had we not created so many turnovers that was a game of touchdown trading. Last years "D" made some good stands when it had to, but overall I think we can all agree it was one of the worst defenses we've had in a long time. I think we'll be much improved because of the supposed simplicity of Venables' scheme. Players who don't have to think constantly can play faster because they know what they're doing. If we can fix the tackling problem then we should be fine.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UNC carved us up?

Jun 6, 2012, 3:36 PM

What game were you watching? they got 14 of their 38 points in garbage time against our 2nd and 3rd stringers and another TD on a kick off return. That's 21 points gained without playing our starters on D.

We struggled with UNC in the first half because of the all out blitzing they were doing. We'd never seen a team brave/foolish enough to do that and after half time Morris made an adjustment and we showed why it is a very very very very very bad idea to blitz like that and put single covered on Sammy, Nuk, Bryant, Brown, etc.

- Georgia Tech learned early Saturday night that, like most teams, it could neither stop nor contain Brandon Thompson.

They adjusted by basically doing nothing.

They basically let Clemson's 6-2, 310-pound senior nose guard stop himself by doing what he wanted and reacting to it.

"Rather than block the guy sometimes you have to read him if you're having a hard time blocking him," said Head Coach Paul Johnson. "We were reading him on the B-Back. So we would turn him loose. If he ran up the field we handed off and if he took [the B-Back] then Tevin would pull it."

Letting the man-mountain come to them simplified the option for quarterback Tevin Washington and B-Backs David Sims and Preston Lyons.

"We just took the read key," Johnson said. "We mixed it up. We mixed it up enough on him to where he didn't know if he was getting blocked or not and he couldn't just blow straight up the field all the time like he did to start the game."

Thompson assisted on tackles on two of Tech's first six offensive plays, which netted a total of seven yards and led to a pair of three-and-outs. But after that, he was only in on four plays the rest of the game, three of those coming on Tech's 16-play, 58 yard drive that ate up 9:04 of the game's final 10:33, preserving the 31-17 win and knocking the Tigers, ranked No. 5 in the BCS poll from the ranks of the unbeaten.

In between, Tech flustered the senior. He jumped offside on a third-and-one, giving the Yellow Jackets a first down and prolonging what would become a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive, that extended the lead to 17-3. On that drive, Sims had a nine-yard run on first-and-10, a six-yard run on first-and-five, and a pair of short gains on first down to keep the defense honest (Thompson made the tackle on one play -- his last stop until the fourth quarter) and setting up wide runs by Roddy Jones (21 yards) and Smith runs of 12 and the final three into the end zone.

Washington, who set a school- single-game, quarterback rushing record with 176 yards, including runs of 46 yards, setting a personal-best, then 56, setting a new career best, credited the offensive line's push and ability to create holes.
Big holes.

How big?

"They were real big," said Washington. "Anybody could have run through them. I was fortunate to be have my number called and got to run through them."

Clemson wasn't as fortunate.

"In a nutshell, we just physically got whipped. We got outexecuted," said Clemson Defensive Coordinator Kevin Steele. "Too many big plays, too many opportunities to get off the field and didn't take it. That having been said, Georgia Tech did what they had to do. They're a well-coached football team. They lined up and physically whipped us."

"The defense didn't execute. We didn't get stops," agreed junior defensive end Malliciah Goodman, who lined up next to Thompson. "We just got outplayed tonight. They basically executed where we didn't."

Saturday was Tech's fifth win in six games against the Tigers and was a huge bounce-back win that snapped a two-game losing streak. It was the first win against a top-10 team since Oct. 17, 2009 against Virginia Tech.

Coincidentally, the Jackets' next game, following their bye this week, is against the Hokies at Bobby Dodd on Thursday, Nov. 10.

So, what would be the effective solution to this?

Jun 6, 2012, 10:19 PM

Have your other linemen break through on the snap? Wonder if Venables can get the players ready for the option / "read" style of play.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So, what would be the effective solution to this?

Jun 6, 2012, 11:01 PM

I would not be the best person t to answer this, but observant enough to watch us get beat over and over by the same play all night. I would say not be so overly aggressive up front and just let the play come to you.

Thompson and Moore played their guts out, but were rarely in a position to make plays on the ball.

Thompson was the perfect Nose guard against a traditional pro set offense like VT, or FSU, but steele could never get him to produce against the spread or tech's option. teams basically learned it was easier to let him loose and run away from him.

We are going to miss him for sure, I hope one of these younger bulls can step up in his absence and we mix it up a little more on 3rd downs. It seems like this is Venable's strength.

Jun 6, 2012, 2:44 PM

Sorry to be a Debbie-Downer, but where are the Oklahoma State and Baylor defensive highlights?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

To be fair those were two of the top offense in the country

Jun 6, 2012, 3:37 PM

also, OSU can be placed slightly in the offense for having so many turn overs and putting the D in horrible situations. Baylor was simply a track meet where RG3 proved why he was the Heisman winner. They dared him to run and he torched them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Or Texas Tech - 41 points given up

Hope alot of that is coaching. OU has some ofthe top linemen

Jun 6, 2012, 4:31 PM

in the country. Venables preparing the defense to also stop (hopefully dominate) the option / zone read will also be a key for some of our schedule.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't Baylor / TT run alot of zone read plays last year?

Jun 6, 2012, 4:34 PM

Seems to be that is what I remember.

Hold on a second.. in that second section of the clip.. when the QB went to run, one of the defenders hit him. That's not supposed to happen is it?? Shouldnt the QB be allowed to run for 10-15?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK vs TX......WOW, what a D. Hope Venables can do it here!

Re: Video, Venables defense vs #11Texas 2011

Jun 6, 2012, 8:35 PM

IMO, it may take a season or two before Venables is able to get the defense playing the way he envisions it...I always feel a major coaching change - a head coach or coordinator - has a season of re-adjustment, while players are found to fit the new schemes, and new terminology and philosophies are learned.

One has to be concerned with the lack of experienced DL depth Venables will have to work with in '12: regardless of the talent levels of the replacement players, can anyone here say they will be as experienced as Branch, Thompson, or Moore? And for that matter, will they even be as talented? IMO, Crawford and Barnes looks to be as good as the departed, but they are going to have to learn very quickly.

I thought Shatley was going to be a good player to help in the transition, but he was moved to OL...

To play devil's advocate...
