Tempo and DW....

Oct 2, 2016, 5:49 PM

For all of DW4's career we have been a high tempo offense and I believe that's been drilled into him. This year we seem to only go up tempo when we are in trouble and yet it seems the offense does better at these times. It really looks like he's trying to zero in on the long ball due to they are long and then a bit behind and I just wonder if the tempo isn't what affects his touch. Thoughts?? I really believe if we improve only marginally on the deep shots we will be unstoppable.

The tempo offense only works when you are

consistently making 1st downs. For whatever reasons we haven't had many of those types of drives.

What I think we saw last night was a couple of OC's that respected Grantham and they wanted him to show his hand before deciding on a play. There were tons of audibles called at the line by both our offense and thier defense.

I also think the up tempo is used sparingly now. We still go fast in terms of 80's and 90's type offenses but the defense now a days seem to have been able to catch up some to the tempo.

I have read several articles where DC's aren't afraid of up tempo anymore, but they are more afraid of teams that go multiple speeds. I think you are seeing a little bit of that with us. We choose when to go really fast.

It makes sense, If the idea

Is to mix tempo, I just wonder if DW is having a hard time dialing in deep due to the rhythm and never being able to settle in.

I agree...the up tempo only works if you get first downs and

maintain possession (i.e. don't turn it over). There are a few things that are different this year about our team than last year and this is one.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about our team and we are 5-0 and ranked #3...but I often feel like we're driving the Ferrari we bought last year but a couple of the cylinders aren't firing so it doesn't go quite as fast, sound quite as good or handle quite as well as it did last year. Still, it's a Ferrari so...

Anyway, my take on it is:

1. Watson should stop going for the long bombs. It's a low percentage pass for him this year as opposed to last.

2. The up-tempo isn't really working for us this year. We make a few plays, get a first down or two and then seem to go three and out as if we're trying to force plays, or we turn it over or one of the other team fakes an injury to slow us down and before we know it...we leave the field with no points and turn it back over to our D.

3. Watson's accuracy is off this year too. Can't deny that. He's either under throwing or over throwing certain passes. He needs to stick with his highest percentage pass...which is short 10-15 yard passes in the flats.

4. Watson needs to run the ball more...not so much in designed QB draw plays but when plays break down or receivers are covered too well...then break out the run. Connor Shaw was an expert in this and could usually scrap for req'd yards to get the 1st down.

5. Dudes need to stop dropping balls.

6. Dudes need to stop fumbling.

7. Better situational play calling that suits the talent on the field at a given point in time in the game.
