Golfers: Have you been fitted and did it help your game?

Aug 5, 2021, 2:17 PM

Started playing golf in the late 90s and played for a few years until our new son required too much time and I pretty much quit for 15 years. I had some old Calloway X-12 irons that I bought in 1998.

Got fitted in mid-June and have been told that my new Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal Pros have been shipped from Atlanta and should be arriving any day now. It's been a long hot wait. I am giddy.

Will it make a difference in my score? God I hope so. I'm 61 and running out of time to break par.

getting fitted is smart, and going with Mizuno is smarter :)

Practice chipping and putting!

I love the grind of practice.

But the heat has set me back a bit since I got fitted.

Got fitted at David Ayres Lowcountry Custom Golf. I went in with no preconception of what I would end up with. Went through a number of options, but the data showed these to be the best fit for me with a slightly heavier shaft.

Yes and no. The only thing that helps my golf game is practice.

I picked up an average of 6 strokes by getting fitted, it helped me more with my driver than the irons & wedges.

of time in the room with another golfer waiting to be fitted. They are booked up months in advance.

I broke my driver last summer pulling my bag out of the truck when the head snapped off. I had to go buy one ASAP, so I bought a Ping G400, which I really like. I felt it wasn't as great a sense of urgency to spend another $500 on a driver.

Maybe what I really need to do is spend a few bucks on the club I use most - the putter. Scotty Cameron?

I got fitted for my Scottie Cameron at Golf Galaxy. They used lasers and mirrors to analyze my putting stroke, then bent (adjusted) the putter accordingly. I use a forward press so they adjusted for that, plus I tend to put with my hands close to my body so they adjusted for that, too. Find a putter that you like and then get fitted.

Yes, but only really changed the length of the shafts

Aug 5, 2021, 2:38 PM

Anyone over 6' should be fitted, due to standard height of clubs and increased club head speed. I'm 6'1" and some change, the change being that I was 6'2" when I was younger. They added 1/2 inch to my Calloway Apex irons, and I stayed with the stiff shafts. Make's all the difference in stance, striking, and stress on lower back. Still playing from the blues, but haven't broken par in quite some time.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The only thing they changed was a slightly heavier shaft.

Aug 5, 2021, 3:00 PM

I'm 5'10" and 3/4".

I will say that the data that they track regarding spin rates, launch angles, descent angles, carry distance, total distance was interesting with the different clubs. That machine would be fun at parties.

Re: Golfers: Have you been fitted and did it help your game?

Aug 5, 2021, 2:43 PM

I have not been fitted ,but have tried every driver and 3 wood known to man and cannot hit any them. Same with the hybrids. The problem(s) for me are too many to mention here but I am currently hitting a 20 loft 3 iron wood( Tour Edge E 521) with a KBS 90 steel shaft. Average distance off the tee is about 170.Best distance is 185.All my other clubs are Tour Edge Hot Launch 4(4-SW) with steel shafts.
I am 70, am naturally left handed, but play right handed, have been playing since 2010 and play from the senior tees. Bogey golf for me is a fair round, but anything from 82-86 is something I can live with.

Youre used to the other clubs

Aug 5, 2021, 2:44 PM

Might be an adjustment period. How much it helps may also depend on how far out the others were.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My old clubs are offset Callaway X-12s. I had recently

Aug 5, 2021, 2:49 PM

replaced all of my wedges with Titliest Vokey wedges which I love, but they are not offset. I got to where I just could not hit the Callaways without a draw(sometimes hook), which doesn't work when you are trying to stick the shot on the green.

My son was fitted in February and he got the Mizuno's. So, I have been able to play with his a bit and was surprised at how much better I hit them than my old ones. That was the impetus for me to go get fitted.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Offset clubs for a draw?

Aug 5, 2021, 2:58 PM

I play with offset irons too (Pings). I have a natural fade because I tend to close the face late. If I I get too quick that fade can turn into a slice. The offset gives me that little extra time to closer' down/square it up before impact.

Offset clubs and oversize grips really helped my game.

I know several people who use offset irons (and metals too) to help minimize a fade or slice, but a draw or hook? That's a new one for me.

My old clubs are the offsets. the new ones are not.

Aug 5, 2021, 3:08 PM

I don't know the precise reasons that I have been drawing and hooking my irons, but I just cannot get consistently comfortable with grip, stance and ball placement with the old irons, so I cannot hit them consistently well.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you tend to draw the ball...

Aug 5, 2021, 3:12 PM

an offset club head will exacerbate the problem.

One of my regular playing partners plays a natural draw which he can control nicely. When he hits my Pings, that beautiful draw turns into a nasty banana hook.

When I got fitted, he asked me what I wanted to accomplish

Aug 5, 2021, 3:41 PM

I told him I wanted to hit a draw with my driver and 3 wood and hit high straight or slight fades with my irons. I had always tended to fade or slice with my longer clubs because I swung too hard and too outside-in.

He made a few tweaks to my swing during the fitting, which I am working to incorporate, but he did teach my how to hit a draw with my woods. I just have to get more consistent with it, but I am definitely hitting it consistently longer.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It certainly helped me.

Aug 5, 2021, 2:58 PM

Up until 1985, I had trouble hitting woods and long irons straight. I would slice one, then hook the next. The fitting pro had me hit about 1,000 balls over 2 days as he worked me through all of the shafts and swing weights. He found that I had very fast clubhead speed which was causing me to flex the standard shafts way too much. Any error in swing timing was causing the shaft to present the clubhead either ahead or behind the swing timing. The consequence of too much loading or unloading of the shaft was at times causing the the clubface to strike the ball in an open or closed position.

He fitted me with Pro Extra-stiff shafts, 1/16" oversized grips and a slightly delofted driver. I immediately narrowed the off-target driving errors and started hitting way more fairways. I also gained about 25 yards of distance with the driver.

The combination of straighter drives and more distance allowed for a pretty good improvement in my game. At 76 years of age, I no longer play the game and gave that set of clubs to GoodWill this morning.

Re: Did you quit playing because you lost interest ?***

Aug 6, 2021, 7:50 AM

Sort of. I was playing often with a friend and he and I both enjoyed a friendly wager on the outcome. I thought the 2nd worst thing was to bet on a golf match and lose - but the worst thing was to not have a bet.

This guy had a natural fade, but one day I noticed his drives would wiggle side-to-side. I thought that was weird - reminded me of a knuckleball pitch. Then I noticed a blade of grass sticking to the face of his driver, which I also thought weird since the grass was bone dry that day.

When I walked back to the cart to put away my driver, I noticed a glob of KY jelly in the corner of the cart. I realized that a smear of that would take all of the spin off the ball - and that was causing the ball to wiggle. Looking at the face of his driver, I could see it was greased. I didn't say anything, but a few holes later, he was in tall weeds behind the green and started chopping at the grass with his wedge before he addressed the ball, effectively improving his lie.

Those two actions on the same day set me off, so I pulled my bag off the cart, walked back to the clubhouse, drove home without speaking to him ever again and have played very few rounds since.

I don't care for cheaters at all.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, it was a good move.

Aug 5, 2021, 3:00 PM

Whether or not your score will benefit from it depends on how much you play.

If you play enough, and are consistent enough in your swing mechanics, you will notice a difference for sure.

Re: Golfers: Have you been fitted and did it help your game?

Aug 5, 2021, 3:16 PM

If you have a consistent swing that you can replicate, then yes. It helped me a lot. If you're shooting in 100's, probably not a consistent enough swing to really help too much

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't have a consistent swing and I have to work hard to

Aug 5, 2021, 3:25 PM

be mediocre. I am a grinder.

I shoot in the upper 70 to mid 80s. I shot a 72(I turned 60 June of last year) from the yellows last October after bogeying the final hole(Argggh!), a 75 from the whites in March. Played the Edisto course for the first time last August and shot a 77. I haven't started tracking my handicap, which I need to do, but right now I'm consistently in the low 80s. New clubs should be here today or tomorrow and I'm looking forward to getting back on the road to improvement with time running out on this old lemon body.

Re: Golfers: Have you been fitted and did it help your game?

Aug 5, 2021, 5:08 PM

First off super jealous of the irons you got. I wanted Mizunos but by the time of my fitting last month the wait was 10-12 weeks, so no go. I got fitted into Srixon ZX5 4-PW in Nippon modus3 tour 105 in stiff flex and I absolutely love them. Like Mizunos they are made in Japan. My old set were Mizuno MX17 (fairly offset) with 5.5 Royal Precision shafts. Going to a stiffer but lighter weight shaft has nearly eliminated the right side with my irons unless of course I do something dumb. It is hard to say how many strokes the new clubs have shaved off my score because I am also getting lessons right now so it could just be that. But I have shot back to back rounds of 90 at my home course (tough course) for the first time and I feel like with more practice I will be shooting in the mid-low 80's before "seasons end". For reference if it helps, I was a 25 handicap in January and after playing nearly every week and going to the range/putting green 3-5 times a week, I am now down to 17.2. Good luck and hit em straight!

The real answer differs from person to person, depending on

Aug 5, 2021, 6:40 PM

just how "misfit" your previous clubs were. I first got fitted clubs back in 1984, green dot Ping Eye 2's. These were light years better than the K-mart things I had before.

Club fitting can only take away the "artificial" errors from your game. What that means is, now your shots that go constantly left or right, up or down are all on you, since there are no longer errors in loft and lie angles, or bad shaft flexes that contribute to your bad shots.

I hope you are happy with the new clubs, and don't call them defective when your game does not suddenly improve 20 shots. :)
