Alrighty - so if I'm going to follow

stubborn_tiger® and fluffhead - apologies in advance Ineligible user® (but not really) - and give up the drinking, I might as well combine that with a plan to lose the 45lbs I've strapped on since getting married & starting a new company.
Any recommendations for free apps that help you track caloric in-take ? Or assist in "mindful eating" - whatever that means ?
A buddy is in Noom and he is down 50+ in the last 4 to 5 months. He says the intake input is a bit of a pain, but hard to argue with the results.
It's time - I'm tired of being fat.

I wouldn't get too caught up in tracking calories

and would avoid MAJOR lifestyle changes as in my observation extreme measures aren't sustainable.
Walk every morning for 30 minutes. Do it again later in the day. Hit the gym a few times per week. Eat a little less. Try your best to avoid processed sugars and fast food. Reduce meat in take a little and replace with green vegetables.
Keep it fairly simple, but stick to it. Walk. And walk some more. Walk a little faster each time.
YWIA, a nice tiddie pig posted ITT would be a great way to say gracias.

Respectfully, most people who are more than 10-15lbs overweight need to consistently eat at a caloric deficit to lose weight. It's just not physically possible to walk or gym your way to being able to eat 2000+ calories a day and lose weight consistently, or with any sort of durable results.
An honest accounting of your caloric intake is essential, and measuring, weighing, and honestly recording your food is the only way to do this. It helps people realize what they are eating and the caloric density of various foods. This is the "noom" psychology- they just show you that you can eat a bucket of blueberries or a slice of white bread for the same caloric intake- which one makes you feel full, satiated, and better?
When I first meet someone that I'm considering for surgery, the first thing I do is have them download the app and start eating 1500kCal/day during the usually 6 month pre-op process. This "primes the pump" for their mind and body so to speak for the dramatic weight loss that happens postop, where I usually suggest between 800-1000kcal/d for the first few months, then 1000-1250 thereafter.
Surgery gives people satiety and satisfaction with eating with just a few bites, and makes it easier to eat less, plain and simple. The metabolic effects of surgery... well... that's an hour-long grand rounds topic for another day.

'Preesh the responses El Doctore - the thing is - I don't

eat a lot - rarely finish a meal.
Lunch yesterday was a side salad (1000 island - on the side - dip the awful rabbit food) and 6 grilled shrimp with sweet tea (bad choice here, I realize).
Supper was a side salad, and a little ramen (didn't finish it) and a forkful or 2 of hashbrown casserole left over from tailgating (in Tampa, unfortunately, NOT God's Country)- water.
I think I may need to do the 100 calories every 2 hours or so . . . my dad bod seems to hang onto everything when I eat sporadically.

From my experience, people tend to be very surprised when they start tracking everything they eat and drink. Many 400lb+ patients tell me they barely eat.

Although the film takes place in Pennsylvania, a Tennessee flag is shown in the courtroom. This is because the set decorator was unable to find a large enough Pennsylvania flag for the scene, and the blue Oregon state flag wouldn't work, because it had "State of Oregon" text on the upper part.

Quit date: July 31, 2021
Approach:
- Let people you trust know of your intentions so that they can help support you. Those who don't buy in to your decision aren't worth your time. - EAP program at work. Mainly to ##### about my boss and clients, but also to talk about the drinking thing. It helps to have someone to chat with that's not a S/O, family member, friend, etc. - Meetings. Some people aren't about that AA life. I am still HIGHLY SKEPTICAL but have gotten a sponsor and committed to working the program. The worst that can happen is I have a spiritual awakening of some kind.
Suggestions: - Fitbit with the Fitbit app. Premium plan uses the same tech as MyFitnessPal (previously mentioned) and tracks overall cardio health. Track your food intake and aim to burn 4000 calories per day. It's not as hard as it sounds when you factor in your base metabolic rate. I think I can burn 1500 calories just sitting in a chair all day.
Results: Weight: 245 lbs to 223 lbs (as of this morning) Resting Heart Rate: 85 bpm (YIKES) to 59 bpm as of yesterday Bench: 255 x 1RM to 305 x 1RM noob (noob) gains after being out of the gym for 2 years. Squat: 315 x 1RM to 395 x 1RM DL: 290 x 1RM to 375 x 1RM Blood pressure is back within a healthy range.
My skin looks good, my Werner stays harder for longer and my ropes are shooting longer and tighter.

not do some other stuff that's really simple, too? The 'complete life makeover' thing, ya know?
Maybe get rich? Gamble all your life savings on that one risky bet that could set you for life...like say lottery tickets. Powerball is up to $432 million. No idea how old you are, but that should hold you over for the rest of the year.
How about moving to an exotic country far away? Just up and sell everything, and take off. I hear most countries are just as easy with immigration as ours is, and if you just show up and say you want to live there, they have no problem with it. Don't even worry about a language barrier. People love Americans! They might even set you up with somewhere to live for a while.
And finally, the one that got away. You remember--that one girl from high school, or college, or teh bus station, that you knew was the one..but somehow the timing was all wrong, what with her saying "no" and 'leave me alone" a lot. But NOW is the time. You have your confidence back. You've lost 3 pounds, are flush with cash, and it's time to go take back what is really yours. Tell you current wife and kids you've decided to go find TRUE happiness and follow your own path. And don't worry about her husband and 4 kids. JUST DO IT.
Please, let us know how all this turns out. I'm so jealous!

its never going away in full 100% mode, just isnt happening. But I can stop getting blasted every Mon-Sun, cut out liquor and still have a good few with the wife and friends on weekends. I was just letting it control my life. You dont have to fully quit to not let it control your life.
I had one at the baseball game this weekend and 2 at the pool. Didn't feel bad about it at all and just staying away Sundays and during the week will work for me.
NOW WHO WANTS TO GET BLASTED AT THE GAME ON SATURDAY??????......wait....I will have my son with me. Poot.

I wonder how durable Noom results are going to be. The story every single patient I operate on tells me is one of decades of cyclical weight loss and gain, with large increases typically precipitated by pregnancy, some traumatic life event, or injury. I wonder if Noom is just going to be the latest in a long series of diets that people have trouble sticking to- they claim to be better about educating people about food and nutrition, which is a huge deal.
To date, the only treatment for Class II and III obesity with proven long-term durable results is surgery, with the added benefit of curing metabolic syndrome and medical comorbidities, decreasing risks of about 20 cancers, etc. Even our operations have as high as 30% weight recidivism rates- huge caveat being that 90% of those usually fall somewhere between 35-55% EBWL and not back to their original weight.

My studies have shown that if your fatasss eats a carrot once in a while instead of a Twinkie and you stop eating seconds, long term weight maintenance is very possible.

+1 for MFP
Sep 14, 2021, 2:53 PM
|
|
Dropped half my weight (literal half my weight) just tracking calories on the app, then adding in exercise.
For the earlier response of "but I don't eat much," I had always believed that, too, but let me drop these few thoughts in here.
1. In hindsight, you don't get to 340lb (where I was when I finally had enough) by "not eating much."
2. The first month on MFP I didn't make strong effort to change my eating habits and I was surprised at how many empty calories I did eat. Daily intake in excess of 3500 calories when it all added up. And not much exercise to boot.
Start writing it all down. ALL OF IT. You'll be surprised.
3. If you're going to be serious about it, get a kitchen scale. You'd be surprised how little some of the serving sizes are. Always use dry mass if a suggested serving is both volume and a mass on a container (example - the Honey Nut Cheerios I had for lunch today is 1 cup (37 grams) on the box). And always weigh your proteins and pastas raw.
And please, please, please, understand that there are ounces mass and there are fluid ounces and those are NOT the same thing.
4. If you're not exercising, don't "wait to lose a few, then get started." When you're in calorie deficit, your body will metabolize whatever it can to get the energy. That includes muscle just as much as fat. The one regret that I have is that I didn't strength train while dropping pounds.

What’s rule #1? Low and slow
I had this vision that the weight would fall off because I was consuming a shitton less calories than before
Semi true. Quick water weight loss happened and as someone already said ,drastic measures for short term gains don’t pan out so well
MyPlate is another good one for food tracking
Life (app for intermittent fasting is a good one). Basically it’s skipping breakfast, so whatevs it’s nothing crazy
Gym life and being generally active are going to be best. Personally, I go to Orange Theory. The class structure keeps me accountable. IDGAF where you go, just do something.
I’m down about 15 lbs consistently. Meaning not counting the daily fluctuations of water weight and aggressive eating. From June 3rd that’s 1 lb a week. It doesn’t seem like much, but low and slow and it’s staying off. That’s the key. It’s easy to lose 5 lbs in a couple of weeks, but it’s also really easy to gain it back
I’d tried the counters before and because I was lying about drinking, I didn’t have an accurate count and it never worked.
Stay active, eat better, and have patience is pretty much what I can offer

"Eat to Live" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman is The Bible of healthy

eating. My doctor had been on me for years to read it and I finally did about 12 years ago. It gives you the info you need to eat right and get your weight right for the rest of your life as opposed to some diet or fad.
1. Don't quit eating the foods you love, just cut back on the bad ones. It's hard to stop eating things you love for ever and ever amen. Just cut back. Try to maintain a goal of 90% of your calories each day/week from non-animal products. Beer and chicken wings? No problem. Just eat right during other parts of the day and week.
2. Not all calories are equal. Your body processes simple carbs and sugars, fats and proteins differently. Proteins require more energy to break down than carbs and fats.
3. Eat protein with every meal to slow the digestive process down. This will fill you up and avoid the blood sugar spikes and crashes that sugar, simple carbs and fats can cause.
2. Avoid simple carbs and sugars. Eating simple carbs is like eating packets of sugar. For example, Don't eat cereal for breakfast unless you want a blood sugar spike and crash an hour later.
3. Eat healthy proteins and healthy fats. In your search for healthy fats and proteins, you will find all of the carbs you need. As you age, your body processes protein less efficiently, so you need to eat a bit more. Crushed hemp seed hearts is THE healthiest source of protein on Planet Earth. 4. Eat until your body says you are full or close, but no more. If you eat the right things, you don't have to count calories. Just eat until your body says it has what it needs. If you eat simple carbs, your body will almost never be satisfied. If you are active, your caloric needs will differ each day based upon your level of activity. Mine fluctuates between 3,000 and 5,000 a day.
Lots more good info in the book and how studies show that eating less animal products and more healthy proteins and fats and fewer simple carbs and sugars allows you to live a far longer and healthier life.

Keto diet ? for CT 15
Sep 14, 2021, 11:05 AM
|
|
My wife and I have both maintained our weight for almost 40 years through monitoring our weight every other day, working out 5-6 days/week and watching what and how much we eat. It has worked well to never let things get out of hand.
We have some family members and friends that don't do this and are at present on the Keto diet. I keep my opinions on weight to myself, but it would seem to me that the protein load of the Keto diet is not healthy long term nor probably sustainable, plus the breath of these folks would scare off a buzzard feeding on a zombie.
What are your views on Keto? For sure they are losing weight, but folks did the same eating rice at Duke which again isn't sustainable.

I typically advise against keto or any other restrictive diet like that for a number of reasons, chief among them like you mentioned is that they are so restrictive, that they simply are not sustainable. Some of the keto stuff is just bizarre, I mean those weirdos will slather mayo on bacon strips for lunch and tell you how healthy they're eating.
Carbohydrate addiction and portion control are two massive issues with the typical western diet, so there are aspects of Keto that I agree with, but eschewing almost all fruits and vegetables in order to avoid complex carbs isnt very good advice. The human body evolved to eat a handful of berries and half of a squirrel every day. At its most basic level, weight loss vs gain is a simple physics equation of calories in vs calories out. There are a lot of ways to accomplish that. My postop diet is a balanced diet from the perimeter of the grocery store only, heavy in bright colorful fruits and vegetables, 60-70g of protein goal, 64oz of water, and 800-1200 kcal/d depending on how far out from surgery.

if you are not a water drinker.
Helps with any lingering "hunger" feelings and most people that think they are hungry are really dehydrated.
