At least this Spring. He adds quality depth to an already pretty darn good and deep unit. But, he steps in as probably our best overall receiver.

You went from sending Clemson home in fear in 2020 to lucking up with rule changes that allow you to buy other teams players. And on top of that, Clemson won’t play along like everyone else. This is definitely one way to build a team.

I really hope Riley's offense is dialed in by the time we play FSU, we are going to need to score 30+ that game. They are loaded at their skill positions, asking our defense to keep them below 28 points will be a big ask.

They better hope their sell swords they’ve hired to play football don’t turn on them. This isn’t a team they built. It’s a team they bought.

… is he good enough to start? We have a lot of guys who came out of high school highly rated. Heck, we’ve lost several guys who were highly rated in high school.
So can/will this guy start at FSU? We’ll see.
Because that’s the only reason a guy like him would transfer. Well, except for money, I suppose. But not being able to start for the school you transfer to is going to seriously handicap your ability to command money.
So let’s see if he works his way into a starting spot for the Noles by August.

Wish our coaches and admin were more enlightened on this topic. Our receivers are quite pedestrian outside of A Williams. That will limit Garrett’s high flying offense. He doesn’t have NFL receivers on the roster, let alone a 1st rounder like he had at TCU.

Koleman was definitely a starter.

58 receptions 798 yards 7 TD receptions
All team leading. (His 7 TD led the team, rushing and/or receiving.)
Rumor is he left the team because he was not pleased with the offense (specifically the QB). Ironically, he entered the portal. Then the QB entered the portal. So both left.
But, probably the reason was MSU was 5-7 last year and he saw very little chance for improvement. He wanted to go to a higher profile school. Like a bunch of players, he wants to end up in the NFL. He did not think MSU was doing a good job preparing him for that. He wanted to go to a school that would prepare him to play on Sunday. Norvell and staff convinced him FSU could do that.
Only time will tell if he made a good decision.

So how many more open schollies does fsu have?

I think our number on 'ship right now is 83. It could be 84. We lost a few guys after Spring when they realized they were 3 or 4 down on the depth chart. A couple went to play with Deion.

Must be a nice feeling to better your roster using every available avenue. Kirby Smart has won 2 championships in a row . He recruits like crazy and takes advantage of the portal. Meanwhile Dabo is bouncing around South Africa after back to back 10 and 3 seasons.

What I don’t understand is how some of you are saying “Why won’t Clemson go get a transfer?”….I mean do you realize that Clemson has zero and actually negative scholarships right now. They aren’t getting anyone unless there’s a transfer which there likely won’t be at this point. So stop torturing yourself this cycle bc it isn’t happening. I mean unless Dabo turned 180…even if Travis Etienne were available in the portal today, Clemson wouldn’t get him.

Why are we in a position to need to use the portal
May 18, 2023, 9:44 AM

when Dabo has said multiple times that he doesn't like the portal and that his transfer portal is our locker room?
Is this because we haven't recruited well enough recently, haven't developed talent well enough recently, or a combination of both?
Not having any flexibility with our scholarships is clearly on the coaches. Please don't say it's because of COVID years, because every other school has had to adjust to COVID years as well and they are able to use the portal.
If our staff had anticipated roster needs better, they would've thought carefully about which freshmen to recruit and offer scholarships to, rather than loading up on them and leaving zero room for potential transfers. But of course they wouldn't do that, because Dabo doesn't want to take transfers. That doesn't help us much right now though, unless he's counting on true freshmen to be better than players we could've gotten from the portal.

No you don't. Dabo has established this family atmosphere and been very successful doing it. You don't run off family when the cool friend shows up or becomes available. I'm sure discussions are had with each player on their potential playing time and areas to improve.
Some of you must be the most miserable little b1tche$ in the world. Constant complaining about a very successful coach who has shown to make changes when needed, just not on our timeline.

You do not build meaningful continuity in your football program with one year wonders - only with recruits that you develop over three good years!

Mike Norvell agrees with you.
May 18, 2023, 5:50 PM
|
|
The poroblem was when he got to FSU there were two major problems.
1. That athletic talent was horrible. 2. The culture in the locker room was even worse.
Then, three months after taking the job a third thing happened.
3. COVID
Coaches couldn't go on the road and talk to recruits directly. Coaches couldn't go on the road and talk to HS coaches directly.
The preferable way to build a program is the way Clemson does - recruit HS players and develop them as people and as football players.
But, that takes time.
So, Norvell tried to walk the tightrope. Build relationships with HS coaches slowly, improve HS recruiting quality slowly, and bring in kids who could come in from other schools - JUCO, grad transfers and transfers who would sit out a year.
Then the NCAA waived the 1 year waiting period and opened the "transfer portal." So, Norvell used it.
But, he knows it is not a long term solution. He knows the way to build the program is through HS recruiting. The portal can be used "cherry picking" a couple of guys to fill a specific need.
As time goes on, you will see FSU using it less and less.
