Thinking the same thing.
Between the "we have to get some first downs first before we can pass to the TE" comment and "he fills a niche", I gotta say that was really one of the more odd interviews I've ever heard from Dabo.
Something ain't right, especially on the offensive side of things.
Makes me wonder, many of these kids were recruited by Jeff Scott, Tony Elliot and Danny Pearman. Now Jeff is gone, Danny is off the field, and Tony has the TE's (and is up in the box). Insert CJ and Tyler Grishman (last year) and maybe there is something amiss.
I hate to speculate, but man alive I've never seen anything like this in 25 years of Clemson Football.
The other thing that seems odd to me, Dabo isn't showing the fire like he did 5 years ago. It took 6 offsides penalties vs NC State before he got really heated.

Based on the next comment he made about needing to get first downs to help get the TEs involved, I think maybe he meant that he is a player that will only be used in certain situations and we haven’t gotten into those situations very much so far. I haven’t heard that referred to as a niche player either but have heard the term situational player used that way. And I guess the word niche fits that definition as well.

Luke was used mostly as a goal line player in 2019. I think that is what he is referring to. We haven't had many goal line situations lately.

I remember seeing him on a few major blocks for Trevor and Travis. He's not purty, but he plays like a junkyard dog. Big fan.

generates first downs and rhythm in other ways? Why is tight end production predicated on first downs and rhythm happening first? Tight ends should be able to contribute to the offense to help get first downs and generate a rhythm, or am I missing something?? I see too many snaps where the tight end isn't on the line of scrimmage, can NONE of them block worth anything?
THIS actually worries me because it alludes to the tight end currently being useless, so we are taking many snaps literally with 10 on offense...

Why doesn’t Dabo just say, “the tight ends play in the middle of the field. Tony won’t call any plays that throw to the middle of the field…”

The TE is one of the most integral aspects on almost every college and NFL team I have ever seen, especially on critical third downs.
I have been saying for years that Dabo will never go get a serious OC because he wants to be intimately involved in the offense. No successful OC Will want to come to a program, even one like Clemson, if he thinks the head coach is going to be constantly meddling. Coordinators want control!
The more Dabo talks this season the worse things get! He has gone from cheerleading, to excuse making, now to completely baffling!

I thought that Chad ran the show on offense in terms of scheme, play-calling, etc. I think Dabo may have overridden Chad on playing Stoudt over Watson. I recall reporters asking Chad why he was playing Stoudt over Watson and Chad replied something to the effect, "Coach decided." Other than that, I never got the sense the Dabo meddled-- not that we'd know.

I love Dabo, but couldn’t disagree more with him further limiting TE plays. Does this mean our OL is so bad that we are going to run blocking TE sets the whole game?

Didn't realize stellato was hurt. Must have missed that along the way. Ashamed though. Thought he might be one with immediate impact.
As for tight ends. Is Lay in the love shack. Raved all during camp about him and, according to snap counts, only played 2 snaps with zero targets, heard he was our best catching TE...
Did he get hurt too and it's not public. Been listed as available. Confused.

Stellato can help the team right now. He was hurt but has been practicing hard and fast for the last 6 weeks I’m hearing. There keeping him on a chain for some reason when they shouldn’t be especially on 3rd downs. I guess there the experts though and are making all the right decisions for the team to win. I feel the same thing has been going on with Phil Mafah. He was gonna be redshirted as well but the transfer portal and an injury is giving him his chance. I’m calling it right now, Mafah will be our best RB this team has going forward for the next 3-4 years.

Mafah is big but nimble for his size, and he reminded me of what Bo Scarborough was doing to us in the natty before he got hurt... Shipley is a talent, Pace is developing, but Mafah just needs the ball and he makes things happen!!
