Interesting comment on latest recruiting article. Maybe more Simpson’s / Simmons in the future and less Boulware/Skalski

According to everything we've read, Goodwin is a defensive savant - a rainmaker. That's great for strategy, but I wonder who will coach the LBs. If it was stated, I missed (or forgot) it. A bonus we got from Brent Venables was that he was a great LB in his own career and I'm sure he taught a lot of technique to the LBs. I just hope our LBs are as good or better going forward.

So you think one must have played the position to coach the position? Good grief. Sometimes the best coaches were not the best players and vise versa.

Nowhere did I say that. I suggested that it would be an added benefit in teaching technique.
Sometimes the best coaches were not the best players and vise versa.
I agree that there are good coaches that were not necessarily good players, but I've found it easier to coach what I know how to do and am good at than to try to teach something I don't know much about. It also helps to be able to personally demonstrate a technique so the player can copy the coach's actions. And using your logic, you're saying that because Brent Venables was a good player he might not be a very good coach?
Good grief.
Good grief yourself, Bub!

I think it’s probably more like Barrett Carter, IS was made in a lab with his size and speed, TS is great but doesn’t have that same recovery speed. But to your point, seems like moving away from the Skalski, Chad Smith type.

Given the replies from Striperfan and MarineOne, I feel a bit more comfortable with the LBs future technique. There's a lot of difference between strategic and coaching abilities, so I'm glad to know that Goodwin has some experience and talent if he's also going to be coaching LB technique.

It doesn't matter what you choose do in life, nothing helps going forward anymore than previous experience in what you're doing, and I don't think that Goodwin has that much coaching experience. And if he does, I haven't seen it listed anywhere. And I don't think that discussing with another coach about a position can be considered as experience coaching that position!!!! BV was a position coach that actually put his hands in the dirt everyday that he was out coaching his LBs....

Are you saying you don’t think Goodwin should/will be a good LB coach because he hasn’t been a full time LB coach before?
If so, I disagree. Under that logic no one should ever be promoted because they’ve never done the job before. Also, being a great coach / leader / teacher doesn’t require that you yourself were great at the thing you’re coaching. Not everyone is blessed with the physical talents to be great at something but they can still understand it better than those who were blessed with those talents.

Paul Johnson never played Sonny Dykes never played Mike Leach never played Hugh Freeze never played David Cutcliff never played
many more current position coaches never played the game. Does it help? I'm sure it does in most cases, but if you know strategy and technique then you can coach.

That's true and I agree that it helps. The question is given the knowledge of strategy and technique, will experience prove to be an edge toward greater coaching. I think it will. Maybe more importantly, a coaches experience can lend a lot of credibility to what he has to say.
My HS football coach was Hal Bullard, who is the only All-American from Lenoir-Rhyne. Hal came to my school as head coach after he had just finished a pro career at fullback - drafted 8th round by the Baltimore Colts and played there first in 1958 as a backup behind Alan Ameche. That team included Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Raymond Berry, Art Donovan, Jim Parker, Gene Lipscomb, Don Joyce, Fuzzy Thurston, among others. Many of those mentioned were All-Pro.
Hal taught me how to block - did I listen? You bet I did. Did I learn anything? Oh, yeah! The guy was an incredibly experienced player/coach/teacher who was willing to get in the dirt with me and teach me what he had learned over the years. I was absolutely in awe of how much he had learned and experienced through his pro career and from his association with the Colts players I mentioned and did my absolute best to do what he showed me how to do.
The memory of his coaching is the primary reason why I don't care for the present-day zone blocking scheme that we (and others) use for our offense, although it is effective at times. Hal taught us to put our guy on the ground, get to the next level and look for another man to block....

Yes. The game keeps changing favoring the Offense. Speed kills if not reciprocated on Defense. Smart move by Goodwin.
Wes needs speed, but he also needs a Boulware/Skalski type leader to step up at LB. Both speed and leadership are needed.

He liked to recruit younger versions of himself at the inside linebacker positions. Dabo Swinney had the same issue when he was the WR coach.
