Was reading something just now and it brought back a story

my great uncle use to tell me.
He was a farmer. Farmed his whole life. The entire family were farmers.
One day a man comes by trying to get people to buy land. This was in the early 40's if I remember correctly.
The land?
Ocean Front downtown Myrtle Beach. Think Skywheel and Pavillion.
He's selling the land for like a dollar an acre because nobody is wanting this land.
My great uncle said he didn't buy it because it was too sandy to farm.
Now the land is worth millions

with an identical story, just replace Myrtle Beach with whatever fast-growing area is developing at the time.
It was a good story, though. You have a way with words.

Litchfield. Her husband died and she ended up selling it to the developer and went on to become a multi millionaire. I guess that really isn't identical to the story at all though.

my father wouldn't buy on IOP or Sullivans because he said noone wanted to live 'over there' because it was only drunks and failures who lived at the beach, and it was too far from everything.
Great fwd thinking, dad.
My friends grandfather bought a 1 acre lot and 2 story house on Sullivan's Island in the early 60's for $8900. It was an old military house from the 40's. He said it was the only place he could afford to live because it came with a house and land.
Times definitely change.

I guess I'll have to keep lookin'.
I'll make you a bet. You sell your place in March when I leave here, and let's compare who comes out of with more equity.

Here's how it really went:
Man- Excuse me farmer, I have some land to sell for $1 per acre would you be interested?
FBFarmer- Only if the following conditions are met: *You pay .50 and I pay .50 *You pay all the realtor fees *You pay all the closing costs *You pay for the inspection *Imma have to sell my land, pull up all my crops, and move them to the new land *My cousins can help me move all my plants to the new land *I can walk away after this transaction with 2 pennies in my pocket
DEAL?

back in the dat to buy lots in Stono Ferry before they went to open market because my mother was best friends with the daughter of the family that owned that farm growing up. They declined.
My dad has told many times that the only times he has ever made a mistake buying land was when he didn't do it.

Like EXACT SAME STORY. Well, he passed up on it because it was a "ripoff". $500 for however many acres which included the Pavillion of course.
Must be a common rural legend in SC, just guessing. Or maybe they offered that land to ###### near everyone in SC at the time.
Instead he bought 12 acres of land in BFE Newberry County dirt cheap(er), which is now 12 acres of lakefront land when they filled up Lake Murray

I've had more than a couple of folks from Rock Hill tell me this story about a relative before. Pretty sure a couple of them never even set foot in the state of South Carolina until after the 1960s, for that matter. It's right up there with the giant scuba diver-eating catfish at every d a m in the state and all the myriad cousins that have fallen into a nest of water moccasins while water skiing all over the state (no matter that water moccasins are almost non-existent above the fall line).

Never heard the moccasin stories. HAVE heard the giant man-eating catfish under the dams.
That being said, there are some GIANT catfish in SC.

My grandfather inherited land in the bustling area known as
Apr 23, 2021, 2:56 PM

Pacolet, SC. His sister went broke and needed money so they sold all the land and split the profits. Today that land still wouldn't be worth sh>it, BUT it would be nice to have that land to fu>ck around on. Ironically, I know the family that bought it and all they do is hunt, fish, ride 4 wheelers, and get hammered out there. Their "playhouse" is like an old family house of mine, I guess. Anyways, thanks for listening to my TED Talk where I explain Greenr came from dirt poor and will always be dirt poor.

for the lakehouse. You'll need to pay the closing costs, pay for the inspection, pay for all repairs, build me a deck made of pallets, and pay taxes on it every year going forward. I'll also need you to move any stuff I want to move in down there at no charge. Also, wouldn't hurt of you stopped and got a few pizzas for me after we close.
I know how real estate deals get done, I read the Jounge.

Before the owner passes on, have them will it to the timeshare company.
If it is willed to family etc, then they have to assume the maintenance fees and all the other goodness that go along with owning one.
