It means he had no shot a playing for Clemson and choose to go somewhere he could play football (in games) and still pursue a first class education. It's nice to know your limits.

Yale or any Ivy League education may look good on paper, but as we have seen these past 6 years, that does not translate into practical everyday common sense and intelligence....

If you look at the stats on $income$, for having an Ivey league degree, it makes perfect sense; especially if you're on scholarship. It's really a no brainer... pun intended.
You can't just use the one example you've given, because you can find exceptions anywhere. Although, it is a GREAT example. LOL.

ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS

The Ivy Leagues schools as a group, have the largest endowments per student enrollment of any league in the US.
If you think their athletes aren't getting scholarships - you are sadly mistaken.

I hope he makes it to the NFL. If not, having Yale on the resume for the rest of your life is a very good thing that's likely to give him connections and open doors that will give him the opportunity to make lots of money.

I would be willing to be a Citadel degree would have done the same, FWIW my nephew in law graduated from CLemson with a degree in English, he aced the MCAT and was accepted to Yale,Hopkins, for med school, full ride, but his bride ( my niece) also a CU grad in pre med(and top of her class) didn't get accepted so they are both at MUSC, 2nd year in med school. It seems his non engineering Clemson degree did him well as did hers. he didn't want to be at Clemson, it's ok,we don't want everyone. then it would be So Car.

I think this part of the actual article is the most telling...
"So when Roberts sustained a chest injury his redshirt freshman season, and saw his position on the depth chart immediately plummet, it gave him a chance to call the audible that changed his life."
Though congrats at moving on to play for a small league football program for fun.

I've never heard a football or basketball player mention Clemson's focus on engineering -- or any other aspect of academia. Most major in things as far from STEM as possible -- e.g. Parks and rec mgt. Does anyone know a starter in a power-five conference money sport majoring in EE, ME, ChemE or CivE? Physics or even Comp Sci? Might be one at Stanford or GA Tech. If they exist, we certainly don't hear about them much.

Andrew Luck was an Architecture major at Stanford I believe.
GT offers very little besides engineering so I'm guessing they might have a few. I think Clemson has a player that is an engineer. But they are few and far between and Clemson offers much more. They also offer political science which appears to be his current major at Yale....

I played at Clemson YEARS AGO. I went on to med school and I'm an orthopaedic surgeon. There were others on the team that took similar pathways as me. Anecdotally, some classmates in med school were Ivy League grads and though they were book smart, they had no more "practically" or applied intelligence than anyone else. They certainly didn't shine any better in a stressful situation compared with anyone else. That was my point from earlier: Yale looks good on the resume, but..... (See last 6 years under our current government).

ForestTiger- You're obviously a liberal and that's your problem. (You want to have a political discussion on the FACTS and not the propaganda, I'm here -though I don't think this is the right forum to get in the weeds with that subject.) And, yes, I know President Bush went to Yale and Obama went to Harvard (my statement was "Ivy League" in general). You missed my point and the point of the original posters on this subject: His article made it sound like Clemson didn't offer his major (which is ridiculous)and going to Yale was such a better move for him (which most of us know that's code for "I couldn't play at Clemson, so I went to Yale"). Again, no one is knocking him. He's found his niche. Most of us need a few years to find where we fit. That's life. Best wishes to him.....

Leaves the engineering school because he doesn't want to be an engineer.
Goes to Yale as a POLITICAL SCIENCE major. Yea pretty sure we had that major at Clemson buddy. I believe architecture is the hardest major to get into at Clemson. He should have tried that out.
Don't get me wrong I wish him the best and know he's getting a good education up there but don't act like all Clemson offers is Engineering or that engineers are cannot be well rounded. Face it you couldn't cut it as an engineer or football player at Clemson.

Designing, building, and perfecting does take a pretty special talent from who ever does it. Just imagine without engineering minded people, we probably wouldn't have Global Warming so much as it is now. But getting to FSU for an away game for our FB team would be murderous.

Give the guy a break

He said his decision was not about football. I'm sure getting to play had a lot to do with it, but I respect that he knows football is not his future. He didn't bad-mouth Clemson, and what he said about Clemson's being primarily an engineering (and science) school is true. As someone with a BA and an MA from Clemson, I freely admit Yale is a better school for liberal arts. However, with my education behind me, I'm glad I'm following Clemson's sports teams rather than Yale's. (I'm just not that into rowing.)

Good for you Roberts, but as most people know
Oct 23, 2014, 9:09 PM

Most Renaissance men were also Engineers as well as artists and thinkers. Da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Benjamin Franklin, Copernicus all were men of science, engineering, art and thinkers. So don't give me that crap that you left Clemson because you wanted to be a renaisance man, you left because you knew you weren't good enough to play QB at a real football school. Walter M. Riggs was a true renaisance man. He was the fatherof Clemson football, an engineering professor, Clemson president and was the first college president to allow women to take engineering classes at Clemson as well as furthering the education opportunities for African Americans by giving unwavering support of SC State. What was your major at Clemson by the way? Oh yeah, pre-business. Enough said. Congrats though.
