make it back anywhere near that high peak in a decade.
Hey bret, with that in mind would you speak a little on how Coach Bowden’s reign slowly collapsed and has not risen anywhere near its peak years.
And do you think Dabo & Clemson’s unreal football success will fall much more from it’s subpar 9-3 year and losing 3 important brains in it’s program.
TIA..and thank you too Sir for your always intelligent & informative posts which are even more special in that you give an objective prospective from another view point, are not mean-spirited as is normal from an opposing fan and I believe you have a child who attends Clemson.

They won it all under Jumbo

it was his lack of program control that has led to this slide, then hiring Taggert. Jury still out now, but not looking especially promising

Great question. What follows is my opinion, shared by a few of my Nole friends.
Bobby's biggest hiring mistake ever was selecting Jeff Bowden, his son, to be OC when Mark Richt left for UGA. It was a major problem with the administration at the time. FSU has pretty strict rules against nepotism, but becasue Bobby was so adamant (he even said he thought about retiring if they wouldn't let him do it) by writing his job description so that he was not "directly supervised by Bobby" but by the LB coach. Anybody who thinks that the OC doesn't report directly to the HC is crazy.
I won't go into reasons why he felt so strongly about promoting Jeff (he had been the WR coach for several years). I've heard all sorts of rumors.
Anyway, Jeff turned out to be a horrible OC. It degenerated to the point that it seemed as though our basic pass play was to throw a jump ball deep and hope the WR could fight off the defender.
Anyway, it degenerated to the 30-0 loss to Wake. After that game Jeff told him he was going to resign. (Fans, boosters and everybody else had been calling for it for at least two years.)
At that point, Bobby called Terry Bowden and aske for his advice for OC. Terry strongly recommended Jumbo Fisher. When Jimbo (and Rick Trickett) came on staff, the culture was broken. Think of Will Muschamp fitting in with the Clemson culture. The close knit family atmosphere of the coaches room was busted. Jimbo was a great X and O coach, and a great recruiter, but he had no personal values that were even close to Bobby and all the coaches he had surrounded himself with. Bobby started every morning meeting with a devotional. Different coaches took turns leading it. Needless to say Jimbo (and Rick Trickett) were completely and totally out of their comfort zone.
So, that is the short version. Bobby replaced an absolutely amazing OC, Mark Richt, with possibly the worst OC in college football, Jeff. Then he replaced Jeff with an OC who did not at all fit into the culture Bobby had built for decades.

I was at that Clemson game in Tally Jeff's last season. Clemson won and while riding the shuttle back to the parking lot let's just say a considerable number of the passengers were saying not so kind things about Jeff. They were pissed and I minded my place as a guest.

Oh, in response to your comment about my child attending Clemson. I don't have a child, so it would be hard for him to attend Clemson. (And at my age, it would be a grandchild, not a child.)??
I did attend Clemson for one term in the Summer of 92. And, that same year we hired a guy just getting his Masters from Clemson. Was a great hire. He was a math teacher and has now become an administrator and doing a great job (still working the the college).

but now would you venture into your personal view of Clemson’s slight drop (9-3) and particularly the recent coaching losses and Dabo’s ability to reload coach-wise and move forward & back upward.
