Kids, retail is taking a dive

and no one can finger out why this is happening. Some say comping stimulus, some say weather, some say that vacations and travel have become the money taker.
What is interesting is its across all major chains and across different materials.
Just got off a retail federation call and it was the first time everyone just admitted, no one knows why sales are so soft.

It's not because people aren't spending

A friend had his food truck at Spring Fling this past weekend.
On Friday he sold out of grilled porkchops at $10 per
Restocked and up the price to $12 on Saturday and sold out
Restocked again and kept price at $12 because only 1/2 day and still sold out
$10 hamburgers, $5 lemonade, $6 for a soft pretzel craziness
Said it's the most money he's ever cleared at a festival. His food is good but not that good. Wasn't just him, one of the gyro type trucks had to close up half way through Saturday - was sold out.
This is just Spartanburg . . . .
Dang they could have walked down to Main St Pub and had a good burger fries and a beer for under $20 - sitting at a table.

I think and what I argued/stated was that people are spending money on experiences right now. The things that you can buy at department or sporting goods stores, well they are sitting as everyone is spending money on experiences that were taken away for nearly two years.
I think its just a correction as really sales aren't "terrible" but they are not the 40/50's comps that everyone was seeing the past two years.

who are NOT renewing their season football/basketball/etc tickets this year. NOT going to concerts, movies, festivals. Cost + difficulty + time ===> not worth entertainment value anymore.
I heard someone waxing nostalgic the other day about for all the things that have gotten easier to do in our lifetimes: cooking, communicating, household chores, research, etc. are all at the touch of a button or keystroke nowadays..........but TRAVEL has gotten significantly more difficult. Highways are more crowded and logjammed than ever, people are more assholish than ever, and plane travel - OHMAGAWD - what a complete clustereff that is now.
We have regressed in the travel industry by decades the last 20 years. Lots of people have just plain given up. If the entertainment doesn't come directly to their backyard, it's just not worth the time and effort any more.

that say, "and plane travel - OHMAGAWD - what a complete clustereff that is now". I am on a plane weekly and I am rarely delayed and hardly ever cancelled. If I miss a flight its typically my meeting went late and I am late, hardly ever the airlines fault. Now some of that is sticking with Delta instead of others, but overall the airport experience, in my mind, is fine. Restaurants are back open and most are staffed really well. Try flying as I did in June/July with COVID restrictions, TSS furloughs and nothing open, that is when it was OHMAGAWD bad. Now, I think its great.

how much did you travel pre-2001?

how about pre-1991 (when FAA FAR107.14 was passed?)
I'm not talking about a year or two ago, I'm talking 20, 30 years ago.
before you were patted down and de-shoed like cattle to get on a plane. when you could actually walk down a concourse and meet your family at the gate. when you could take a bottle of water on a plane. when you got a decent meal on a plane. when you could get to the airport 30 minutes before your flight and have no issues making your flight. when frequent flyer clubs were awesome and miles never expired.
I got into the airport industry right out of college in the late 80's and worked in it until the post 9/11 BS drove me out. I've seen top and bottom.
It's safer, I suppose (macro as in crashes/hijacking, not micro as in the odds you get in a fistfight with the guy sitting beside you). But not much else.
Believe me, air travel has regressed severely.
This article was written pre-pandemic. It covers some things I mention and many others. https://www.vox.com/new-money/2017/4/12/15247172/why-airlines-are-terrible

(per Obed), you tend to try and get another 6-12 months out of the old ones. When that $30K car is now $65K, the clunker in the garage suddenly looks like it has 30K more miles left in it. When a pound of hamburger is $7, you decide the $2 jar of peanut butter is a better option.
Extrapolate that to everything else on the shelves right now and there you go.
Money gets left in the wallet. It's not a big mystery.

Some economists say stimulus savings from the March 2021 package ran out for most everyone just this month. We are also seeing an uptick in retirees returning to work—in combination, these trends could help ease the labor shortage.

published something last month about the consumer spending shift from services to durable goods at the onset of the pandemic. It was just a matter of time before the pendulum swung the other way... one can have only so many Pelotons, I guess:
"When consumer services recover, what happens to durable goods? The pandemic sparked a remarkable change in consumer spending patterns. Spending on durable consumer goods jumped US$103 billion in 2020, while spending on services fell US$556 billion during the same period. Households substituted bicycles, gym equipment, and electronics for restaurants, entertainment, and travel. Once households can again purchase services, will they begin buying fewer goods? That may be happening, as by December 2021, durables spending was down 14% from the peak in March 2021."
