I am way, way better off than I was four years ago.

Oct 28, 2012, 10:22 PM

Actually, I'm way, way better off than I was just a year and a half ago.

Thing is, though, I did build that, which is part of the reason I don't hang out here anymore.

Obama has failed. Romney gets my vote, just as he would have four years ago had he won the nomination. Some people here might remember me saying that back then.

My concern is that people show up in the red states in big numbers, giving Romney a huge lead in the popular vote, while Obama squeaks out just enough swing states to win the Electoral College.

When the popular vote winner lost in 2000, it was close. If the aforementioned scenario occurs, Romney could conceivably win the popular vote overwhelmingly. Much more than Gore did in 2000.

Think this country can't get more divided and vitriolic than it is now? Just wait.

I hope like hell that scenario doesn't happen, but I fear it will.

Romney is whatever is behind door number two, I have no idea what he is.

All I know is his record at bain was 75% success, 25% miserable failure and he and his buddies came out on top either way. I am not willing to take that chance with our country.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Romney is a pure politican.

Oct 28, 2012, 10:48 PM [ in reply to Re: Maybe he doesn't think Romney is as conservative... ]

He will say and do anything to get elected. He believes he SHOULD be president. He doesn't believe it's a service position where he can enact good through his positions. He simply believes that it's the best career choice for him. Now, that may sound negative towards Mitt, but know that I think if he were elected he would govern from the center like Obama has for most of his presidency. I would be SHOCKED if Romney's presidency was any different than Obama. I don't think they repeal Obamacare, I don't think he would do anything differently from a tax or spending standpoint. The economy will continue to improve and with it more revenue will enter government and spending will continue to hold steady so deficits will lower which will make Romney look like he is doing something to affect it even if he isn't. By the end of 2016 we will have added 12 million jobs, like the CBO is projecting, and everything will seem improved. The president in 2016 will leave a much better America than what he inherited and people will cheer him. Whomever wins just needs not screw things up and they should have a successful legacy.

The best result if that does happen is:

Oct 28, 2012, 10:40 PM

Getting rid of the Electoral College. It's usefulness is so dated. It needs to be gotten rid of.

Seems like Obama and Romney are running for President of Ohio, Florida, and Colorado.

don't agree at all...

Oct 28, 2012, 11:05 PM

as long as we want to have a federal system where the states and localities have more expansive powers than the federal government (because they're closer to the people), we also ought to allow states to elect presidents rather than having a direct popular vote. As one writer I've been reading has said, there is no such thing as 'the popular vote' for the president. There is only the vote of the states through the electoral college. So Romney and Obama absolutely are "running for president of Ohio, Florida, and Colorado," because they are running for President of the United States, not president of a directly democratic state.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just disagree there

Oct 28, 2012, 11:09 PM

We're the only country in the world to use the Electoral College anymore. Who wanted a popular vote from the founders?

James Wilson and James Madison

One reason against back then? Too difficult to do so because there were so many slaves.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg2006_ncaa_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

well most others use a parliamentary system which is

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i'm generally in favor of the electoral college as well and

Oct 28, 2012, 11:11 PM [ in reply to don't agree at all... ]

i think you summed it up well, here is where I'm having a hard time. I think you live with the every so often disconnect, see 2000 only the 4th time in history and the popular was only off by half a percent (something like 48% to 48.5%....)

But....in a scenario (which could actually happen based on how the current math is working) where one guy wins by a few full percentage points and loses, that will raise a lot more eyebrows. I don't know the answer because I don't want to scrap it entirely, but I'd be interesting in looking at possible adjustments.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I just think its concert is so dated

Oct 28, 2012, 11:15 PM

It just makes no sense at all. You vote for a very small group of people to vote for the President. Uh, what?

As for this election, I'm pretty indifferent since my vote doesn't matter here in New Jersey. And millions of others around the country are in the same boat.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg2006_ncaa_champ.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

see i view it as a states issue, much like the concept of

Oct 28, 2012, 11:17 PM

the senate.

Smaller states are over represented in the Senate. Alaska has as much voting power as California. I like that, I like the fact we have so many checks and balances and the states still have power in the system (although it had greatly eroded).

Oct 28, 2012, 11:58 PM [ in reply to Re: I am way, way better off than I was four years ago. ]

Obama needs to run on the success of his own policies after four years in office, not on the failures that got him elected in the first place. If he hasn't done anything to solve the problems that he saw in 2008, then he needs to be voted out. The "no return to failed Bush policies" line seems to be the same thing as Biden saying "the middle class has been buried these last four years."

Falsehood flies, and truth comes limping after it, so that when men come to be undeceived, it is too late; the jest is over, and the tale hath had its effect: like a man, who hath thought of a good repartee when the discourse is changed, or the company parted; or like a physician, who hath found out an infallible medicine, after the patient is dead.
