Jim Phillips

Jul 11, 2012, 1:43 PM

I miss Jim Phillips.

Wish he was still around to call the games.

I just wish he was still around.***

Jimmy Coggins was also the owner of our small-town radio station in Newberry. He had a great radio voice, as does his son who took over after he retired. Not sure of the family allegiance though. I think the son went to Coot U.

Jimmy was a Clemson grad, however, there was hard feelings when he and his color commntator and business partner Ed Osborne were fired from the network. I don't know if Jimmy ever got over it. I worked with Ed at his station in Union for 13 years, one of the finest men I have ever known. Ed maintained his relationship with Clemson until his health hampered his attendance at games, etc. but he was solid orange through and through.

Agree.. 100%. There are a lot of outstanding play by play announcers out there. Wish we had a good one.....

Not sure if you guys are old enough to remember when Jim wore the world's worst toupee. Kinda looked like George Costanza on Seinfeld when he got his rug. A riot.

Ashburn...I sure do remember...he must have bought it a yard sale...it was terrible. He also loved being on campus talkin' to the coeds. He was a real "tiger".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He did. He bought a used shag carpet and cut a new...

piece off of it every week. It saved on shampoo.

Even better, he used to come out to the bar at the Holiday Inn for a few night caps, and his rug would be slightly skewed (based on the amount that he had imbibed). Nobody wanted to tell him to fix it up because it was too hilarious - oh, and along with his plaid pants. The man was a dude...

He hated that rug. Channel 4 made him wear

Jul 11, 2012, 8:33 PM [ in reply to Re: Jim Phillips ]

it for TV. One of the funniest things I ever saw was at halftime of a Furman basketball game he, Sam Wyche and the on Spartanburg Herald sports editor Les Timms were asked to wrestle a bear. The bear slugged him on the shoulder and the rug went flying across the court to everyone's enjoyment, including his.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

me too...his voice was such a part of my childhood

Jul 11, 2012, 2:04 PM

for us who were born before cable tv went nuts Jim was how we would "see" road games in both basketball and football.

Thats a good one. I also like the victory over UNC and hearing him say Buckner Jams is a good one too

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I knew when he passed it would never be the same.

Jul 11, 2012, 2:26 PM

Pete and Will are O.K. But anyone after Jim wouldnt be able to fill his shoes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, but the bigger issue is the buffoon Wil Merritt.***

Jul 11, 2012, 2:40 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree and I still think he should be.....

Jul 11, 2012, 2:53 PM

in the ROH - I know he didn't have a 4-year college degree but IMO an exception should be made in his case.

He was THE Voice of the Tigers for over 25 years. How many schools do you see anymore with one announcer who covers all their sports? How many announcers stay that long anymore at one school?

I hope he gets into the ROH one day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. We got a couple ot ROH issues that need to be fixed.***

the true "voice of the tigers"

Jul 11, 2012, 2:54 PM

He was one of those people that you just though he would be around forever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You knew if you heard his voice on the radio......

Jul 11, 2012, 2:57 PM

that a Clemson sporting event was on the air - didn't matter if it was football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. because he did them all (unless he couldn't be in two places at the same time).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Met Jim when I was decorating WFBC Radio and he saw the art

Jul 11, 2012, 6:29 PM

I had just hung in conference room.. of Sports Illustrated limited edition sports lithographs I had purchased from them. He walked into room as I was putting up my tools..and without looking at me asked where I had gotten these 5 prints since they were so neat..of Arnold putting at Amen Corner, Johnny Unitas with Colts, etc.

Go TiGERs!
