How do voters treat us next year?

Jan 23, 2014, 10:58 AM

I know half of you hate polls, half of you hate hypotheticals, and the last half think it's too early to talk about next season...but anyway I CouLD CarE LeSS whAT They THInK

say we come out against UGA and win big time. Whoever our QB is looks impressive and the defense comes out swinging. Do the voters move us up quickly to promote the CU vs FSU game following.....or do they keep their distance and wait until after the FSU game to give us a significant bump (with a win of course) because of last years debacle. I know UGA has been picked by many to win the east next year even with the loss of murray/others.

I say top 20 before UGA

Jan 23, 2014, 10:59 AM

WHEN we win We should be top 15 maybe higher depending on how we win and whatever else happens to other ranked teams.

They have nothing to do with the playoffs.

Jan 23, 2014, 11:03 AM

I'm sure we all want Clemson to move to the top of the polls for pride's sake but these people will have no influence on the selection of teams for the playoffs.

We need to win the opener, win each game as it comes, win the division, win the conference then win the state.

Nothing has changed from last year's goals.

While they don't decide

Jan 23, 2014, 11:20 AM

I do think it fairly naive to argue that the polls will have no influence.

The polls may reflect the top teams and those who are in consideration for playoff spots toward the end of the season. Sometimes the polls get it right. It's a 'blind squirrel,' thing.

The only poll that matters is the one generated by the selection committee. This committee is not susceptible to spin, computer bias nor will it be produced with consideration to 'preseason hype,' or any other hype.

Perhaps I am naive but from what I gathered as the criteria for the playoff selection was published the committee will watch games, determine SOS' and make reasonable, informed and unbiased selections.

Believing that the four teams ranked highest by the BCS, AP or computers are automatics for the playoffs is contrary to the information the selection committee published.

I will not insult you for thinking that the similarities between the selection committee's poll and our traditional polls are a reflection of the selection committee's failing to do as they promised.

I do believe we'll be ranked next season to start off. But those knuckleheads will always slight us because we're an ACC skewl.

Hypocritical irony:
The same voters that slighted us in the past because, "Boyd can't win a big game", are the same idiots who will note how crucial Boyd was.

"But those knuckleheads will always slight us because we're an ACC skewl." Give me a break! We were ranked no. 3 last year by those "knuckleheads." Clemson, in my opinion, was never a no. 3 team.

You don't think people slight us because we're in the ACC? You don't think they favor the SEC? Notice how far some teams drop with a loss. And notice how moderately an SEC team falls when losing a conference game. But I'm sure folks will offer up 10,001 excuses for this.

shirley you jest.

Jan 23, 2014, 12:28 PM [ in reply to Re: How do voters treat us next year? ]

tigerbry was spot on, let a acc team lose and they plummet in rankings, let an sec team lose and they drop a few spots spots - see usuc after the tenn. loss, as an example.

Why would the voters care about promoting the CU/FSU

Jan 23, 2014, 11:07 AM

game?

I expect us to be ranked somewhere between 15-20 in the preseason rankings. Most preseason polls are heavily biased towards big name programs and skill position players. We haven't gotten to the point where we get ranked every year just because of the name on our jerseys, and most voters will see that we lost Tajh, Sammy, M. Bryant, and Hot Rod, and they will and they will drop us down considerably from where we finished last season.

If we go into Sanford and beat UGA on their own field on opening day though i think we will jump up quite a bit, probably just a few spots outside of the top 10.

Re:How do voters treat us next year?Wish there were no polls

Jan 23, 2014, 11:22 AM

till about October. The offseason subjective seeding based on your past body of work is silly and just gives certain teams an advantage for no reason of work done on the field. Wait a month then rank them.
