and managed that offense well. Clemson's offensive wasn't explosive back then since Danny preferred the running game way more than passing. The ball control offense gave the defense rest and they usually dominated when they were on the field. It was good to see Homer on that ACCN show about the '81 season.

Homer Jordan played a big role in College Football History!!

Did not know that Homer Jordan was "the first Black starting quarterback to lead an FBS (then Division I-A) team to a unanimous national championship." I remember him and that 1981 team well. I was a teenager at the time.
I LOVE the point that "his role in opening so many doors for those who came after him."
Great Read! Thank you for posting!

That fact alone dictates that he receive serious concern for the R.O.H.

It was a real treat to re-watch the championship game recently on youtube. Vestiges of DW and MW.

He was magical that one year ... the perfect QB for Clemson

He showed lots of promise in 1980, but during his senior year there were some issues with the NCAA that caused him to lose some time as the starter.
If just the 1981 season is the measure then he is as good a QB as Clemson has ever had.

some of the best years of Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, or even Tajh Boyd.
I realize that it was a different era and a different offense we ran then, though.
Nonetheless, I agree that Homer is an underrated QB who was ideal for our team that year.

Homer was the perfect QB for Clemson at that moment in time.

Homer didn’t have Watson/Lawrence/Boyd stats because Clemson was primarily a run-oriented option offense at the time.
But they went 12-0 and were crowned national champs.
They don’t do that without Homer Jordan.
And I say this with the knowledge that Clemson was close to signing a certain pocket passer named Dan Marino during that era.

Could you imagine Dan Marino signing with and potentially being a starter for Clemson back in the day?
I wonder what that would have looked like.

Danny would’ve tried to make him an option QB.

No chance Danny would’ve made us a pass happy offense.

Great article and to think he came from Athens, Georgia makes it even better.
It does seem that Clemson should find a way to repair his championship ring since he's afraid to send it off through the mail to be repaired!

Did you know ? In 1980 when Georgia won the national championship Clemson's only loss was to Georgia.
In 1981 when Clemson won the national Georgia's only loss was to Clemson.
Those two used to really go at it. And yes. Homer is underappreciated. You couldn't tell by his play that he was slap wore out. That guy epitomizes champion

Not so. Georgia lost to Clemson and Pitt and Clemson lost about 5 games in 1980.

I'm STILL trying to forget that embarrassing 1980 loss to Duke in the rain. I'm happy that you have managed to put that one behind you.

I think Woodrow Dantzler is probably the most under appreciated of our quarterbacks.

I was a freshman when we won the national championship. Homer Jordan was the perfect QB for the system that we ran. He can't get enough credit for the 1981 season, but is a little overshadowed by the guys who had NFL careers like William Perry and and Perry Tuttle.
But his Clemson career is weird. I mean, going into 1981, not a lot of people saw anything resembling that success. And then nobody could have performed better than Homer in 1981.
And in 1982, because of NCAA issues, he was benched for Mike Eppley, who played really well. The Tigers had consecutive 9-1-1 years under Eppley, who would become a Tiger broadcaster. We really didn't miss Homer.
So I don't see Homer as a Ring of Honor guy, but he was a fine QB.
If I was to rank guys in my lifetime, I'd say: 1. Trevor Lawrence 2. Deshaun Watson 3. Steve Fuller 4. Tahj Boyd 5. Homer Jordan

Between the ESPN article last December, the Orange Bowl HOF nod, & the network special, think we've really seen him receive his flowers on a national level.
He didn't have the gaudy stats & his Sr year got derailed by preseason injury & the NCAA stuff. But he was dual threat before dual threat truly became a thing. He was the perfect player to run the 1981 offense. More importantly, he had the respect & trust of his coaches & teammates as a leader & a competitor.

Very similar passing stats and roles on their respective teams, but Homer added a running dimension that Buck didn't bring.

He managed the run option Offense and could throw the ball on the money to Perry Tuttle (17 ypc) when Danny Ford allowed it. A winner from Athens, GA who had that ice in his veins.
