not maintain the momentum of their great 1948 undefeated season. Clemson compiled a 4–4–2 overall record (2–2-0 in conference), and tied for seventh place in the Southern Conference in Coach Frank Howard's 10th year.
No. 16 North Carolina won the league with a 5-0-0 mark, and 7-4-0 overall record. The only other ranked team in the SoCon was Maryland, at No. 14. (4-0-0, 9-1-0).
For the first time ever, Clemson had as many home games (five) as road games. Unfortunately, this did not turn out to be much of a benefit for the Tigers this year, as we compiled only a 2-2-1 record at Memorial Stadium.
But, once again, Memorial Stadium proved to be Death Valley for the Presbyterian Blue Hose, as Clemson thumped them 69-7 to open the season on a high note.
Next up, Clemson took a trip out to visit their old coach Jess Neely and his Rice Owls. Coach Neely was a very rude host, as his charges buried the Tigers to the tune of 33-7.
From there, the season was a grab bag of wins, losses, and ties. Among the disappointing losses, a 27-13 defeat at the hands of the Clucking Capons on Big Thursday in Columbia. Clemson now led the series 29-16-2.
The last game of the season kind of mirrored the rest of it, ending with a 20-20 tie against Auburn on the road. 2-2-1 at home, 2-2-1 on the road. It was just a break even kind of year. All results below:
