60 years ago, 1962, Coach Frank Howard's 23rd year as Head

Jul 7, 2022, 8:15 AM

Coach of the Tigers, resulted in a 5-1 ACC mark, good for 2nd place in conference, and a 6-4 overall mark. Not even Conference Champion Duke was ranked, even though they had a 6-0-0 conference, 8-2-0 overall record. As previously stated, the pollsters now considered the ACC to be the weak “White Meat League” of college football. Same narrative that the TV pundits are pushing today. But, on to the season.

For some reason, someone thought opening the season on the road against Georgia Tech at Grant Field would be a good idea. They were wrong, as the Jackets stung the Tigers 26-9.

Next Clemson would win on the road, 7-0 against NC State, and 24-7 at Wake Forest. But then, something would happen that has not happened many times in school history. We lost three straight games at home in the Valley.

First came Georgia, dealing us a close 24-16 defeat. Then, eventual league champion Duke shut us out 16-0. This was followed by another heartbreaking close loss to Auburn, 17-14.

The Tigers would finally taste victory again at home in the next game, defeating North Carolina 17-6.

From there, Clemson would “run the table” to end the season with four straight wins. With the exception of a 44-3 win over Furman, all those games would be close, including a 20-17 win over the South Carolina Gamecocks, who now occupied their future customary place as the last regular season game. Clemson now leads the series 35-22-3. All results below.

At Georgia Tech L 9–26
At NC State W 7–0
At Wake Forest W 24–7
Georgia L 16–24
Duke L 0–16
Auburn L 14–17
North Carolina W 17–6
At Furman W 44–3
At Maryland W 17–14
South Carolina W 20–17 (2nd All Time meeting in Clemson, Clemson leads series 35-22-3.)

Re: 60 years ago, 1962 - makes you think of a Bob Seger song

Jul 7, 2022, 9:42 AM

I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far off I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves
When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
Strange how the night moves
With autumn closing in.

1962 is a popular year to sing about. In the old all time

Jul 7, 2022, 9:44 PM

classic country song "He stopped loving her today:"

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single 'I love you'

I went to see him just today
Oh, but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.
