Recruiting rankings, just for fun . . .

Dec 8, 2019, 12:50 PM

Using the 247 composite rankings over the last 5 years, here are the averages of the CFP Playoff teams:

OSU - 5.8
LSU - 6.8
Clem - 10.6
Ok - 11.4

I know there are issuses with the way these rankings are determined, and that they are controversial to say the least, but I think it makes a couple of things very clear. First, you can't win big without recruiting big. Having said that, it also shows that there is a lot more to success at the highest level than recruiting the highest rated players. Consider that UGA averaged a 3.6 ranking over the same period, and they clearly did not belong in the playoff conversation. No surprise to most of us, but it's probably safe to say that nobody consistently does less with more than UGA. Conversley, I love the way we do it: recruit elite talent, no doubt, but not just the highest rated. We also recruit based on the integrity of the player and his fit with our culture, a culture which drives EVERYTHING. Then, we take all of those players, from the Trevor Lawrences to the Nolan Turners and DEVELOP them. We know that Dabo and staff pay no attention to recruiting rankings, because there is so much they can't account for. Talent, culture, development, and coaching; you gotta have 'em all, and nobody understands that or does it any better than Dabo and his entire staff. I think that because of that, we win it all again, and while other folks are starting to catch on, they are all playing catch-up. What a great time to be a Clemson Tiger!

Even more so than UGA, Bama is an epic fail given their recruiting.
It comes down to coaching.

I don't disagree, but I gave Bama a little consideration for

Tua going down. Still a valid point though.

It takes into account all the players currently on the roster as opposed to all of the players originally recruited by a school.

Thanks, very interesting, and I didn't even know this

existed. To the extent this is accurate, it further shows that talent overall is critical to playoff level football, but it's not the only thing.
