Yep, a $1500 bet (on his team while away for mental issues) cost him $11.2 Million. Enough to drive a sane person crazy.

Hornung and Karras bet on their teams in an era of much more modest player money. Back then lots of guys had offseason gigs selling cars, insurance, etc. I think they were each suspended for a year

That’s so hypocritical considering the league is openly promoting, advertising and partnering with gambling outfits and developing platforms for in-game wagering.

Right? They're happy to take millions in ad revenue from Fan Duels and Draft Kings, but have a player place a bet when he's not even involved in the outcome? Well that deserves a more serious suspension than beating the hell out of your GF in an elevator.

It’s not hypocritical at all. Players and coaches have inside information and the ability to manipulate outcomes. It’s pretty #### obvious why they are not permitted to gamble on their own sport.

It's like insider trading...

And I agree it's wrong for players or coaches to bet on their sport. But if he had his wife, GF or buddy bet for him, he wouldn't be in trouble. For that simple fact I think it's crazy for him to get a full year. If he had 1-3 games suspended then I could understand that, but full season is really ridiculous. How many players do you think gamble on games just under different persons?
Especially add in what others have mentioned about the betting companies that pay NFL millions but their players can't make an investment?? Little too stiff punishment if it was up to me but guess not.

Gambling is not an investment. Come on.
The likelihood or method by which others are gambling cannot be a factor. It’s a rule, a clear rule, and a very serious rule. You simply cannot break it. The implications of allowing leniency could ruin sports altogether.

C'mon, you actually think I thought a bet was an investment. Jeeze, it was just a twist on words to maybe add some levity, or should I use the word humor? I think everyone else understood my point.

Yeah, we understood that you think the enforcement of the rule is too harsh. A guy slated to make $11 million needs a little extra coin in his life.
You could make a bettor case ("bettor"--did you catch that?) using as your example a guy only making $500K-- but all of them were too smart to do the stupid thing and get caught.
So, yeah, we understood your humor and illogic and disagree with it.

It’s a simple concept. Don’t bet on your sport. If you must bet then the books offer a wide range of options. A year serves as a reminder to all and is very fair as the league knows a betting scandal would be a huge deal so they can’t crack the door

Ridley might be, too. His suspension is "at least one year". He has to file for reinstatement.
