D Rad and Board of Trustees

Oct 28, 2013, 9:50 PM

Does anyone know the back story on why we are now renovating littlejohn vs building a new facility? Did the board shoot down a new arena or was this drad's decision?

They're basically building a new facility on the same site..

DRad said you should be able to stand at center court in the renovated building and not be able to tell you're in the same place -- similar to what he did at Ga Tech.

I thought they say if you build it........

Had an awful coach. That means a lot too.

GT has been in their new facility one year...

it's a little soon to pass judgment on its success or failure. Plus, as someone else said, Paul Hewitt recruited lots of "one and doners", which is a tough was to build a program.

The inside of GT new's arena may look nice, but on the outside it still looks like that old POS thrilla dome

Idk about that

Re: D Rad and Board of Trustees- I think where the LJ is

they felt was the best place for a hoops facility. didnt want to clutter up campus with a new building and the old one too. He did this same thing at GT so he knows the drill.

I'm just annoyed we didnt do it right 10 years ago and have to do it again now.

Clemson is famous for not planning ahead...

Oct 28, 2013, 10:17 PM

and that's been the case for the better part of the last 30 years. The last AD that had any vision of the future was Bill McClellan. That isn't to say that the others were bad ADs, they just didn't plan ahead. Well, I guess with the exception of football. I said when the Indoor Practice Facility was in the planning stages that it should accommodate all of football's day-to-day operations I was ridiculed. Turns out DRad agrees with me. If it had been done right the first time (like Littlejohn and Doug Kingsmore), then the additional 30 million dollars (and loss of a soccer practice field) wouldn't be necessary. Littlejohn was such a huge improvement 10 years ago that we all thought it was great when it really wasn't. The same thing is true of Doug Kingsmore.

yeah I remember when jervey was built and to be used for indoor fb practice. then the indoor track was supposed to accomodate football. I've concluded Clemson tells you anything to get your money and I now give accordingly.

No place better than the current site, and I agree

Oct 28, 2013, 10:07 PM

LJ is perfectly located. So they basically will tear it down and build anew

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sounds more like a rebuild on the current LJ site,

Oct 28, 2013, 10:32 PM

which is the perfect location for an arena, being on top of a hill and all in the midst of our athletic area. Perhaps there's infrastructure in place that can be salvaged as well. Playing an entire season's worth of ball in Greenville for a full season is no small sacrifice. Ultimately though, the Littlejohn site is the absolute best the campus has to offer. So far this is shaping up to be a solid plan.
