May 11, 2012, 6:00 PM

I'm going to the southern 500 tomorrow. Does anyone know any good places to eat down there?

Traffic is a bear. Be prepared to sit in traffic for a while unless you get there 24 hours before the race. It took me over 2 hours last time I wnet after I left the Interstate. It's a great race but don't think you can cruise over to a restraunt and be there a couple of hours before the flag waves.

Recommend the Carolina Lunch/Dairy Bar near downtown Darlington (318 Pearl Street). Nice history behind this place. The Dairy Bar has been around since the forties, but was closed in the seventies. Carolina Lunch, also called the Greeks, used to be attached to the old tobacco warehouse in downtown Darlington. The warehouse burned down in the eighties and Carolina Lunch reopened the Dairy Bar and has been there every since. I suggest you order a hot dog all the way, chili cheese fries, and a chili cheese burger (but i'm fat). They only open for breakfast and lunch and close around 2:30 or 3. You will have plenty of time to get to the track for the night race.

Head to Florence...

Local favorites of mine are The Townhouse Restaurant on Irby Street (great fried chicken & grilled pork chops) and Red Bone Alley. Everything at Red Bone Alley plus great atmosphere.

Also, for a greasy burger and dipped cone try The Sundae House.

Enjoy!
