Anyone here own a Tesla Model Y or VW ID.4?

Been comparing the two...

Looking at a Model Y.... The improvements to build quality, body work & paint, and ride have been significant, especially over the last 1-3 years.

I have an ID.4 on order and liked the way it felt while driving too.

Both have the space we're looking for. Love that the ID.4 has CarPlay and feels a bit more like a car with handling and coasting when you let off the pedal. You also get 3 free years of charging at Electrify America network with new purchase.

I prefer the longer range offered in the Tesla Model Y (LR), and the charging network. I don't like that you can't use Waze on the infotainment screen any longer along with other app restrictions (namely car play).

Both get the $7,500 tax credit and a $2,500 sales tax credit in TN.

If you own either of these (or a Model 3 I suppose), is there anything that surprised you, good or bad.

What surprised me the most was that it's

At Daytona. So it’s coming.

You race in Daytona.

Electric cars are powered by fossil fuels. It just that being one processing step away from gas makes some people feel good. During a recent hurricane they brought in diesel powered electric generators to charge the electric cars.
They are a ruse.

Well, he didn’t give a reason for his wanting one so I’m not

Jun 26, 2023, 6:39 PM

sure you’re non-answer of his question does him any help. But maybe he thanks you for your input?

I’d have helped him but I don’t own one yet. It’ll be more of a norm in 3-5 years either way you slice the apple. I’m looking forward to the pure speed and power from those beasts of technology, but that’s just me.

You got a link to that TN sales tax credit? That’s news to me.

A tax credit is simply other people ponying up to support you. Where does the govenment get its money? Consumers!

Yes, I understand quite well.

I also understand that I’m a fiscal conservative who pays a crapton of taxes and isn’t going to leave a couple thou on the table just so I can be smug about it. I’m paying that incentive to others either way. May as well get some back if it’s there.

For sure, and same thing with non-profits and churches

Not pitching in for society financially in that sense. Our govt has rendered it a good trade off. Sometimes I agree with them, sometimes I don’t, but that’s what being in a functional society does.

Dang it....

read old information. Looks like there is a $400 credit for getting a home charger though.

Personally I like the looks of the VW over the Model Y, but can’t offer any insight.

Since no one else seems to actually be answering the question, here's my stance as a Model 3 owner. Forewarning, I'm an expat who has lived in New Zealand and Australia for the last ten years, so sorry if I use our words for stuff and it doesn't make sense

Price point was important but range was most important. Hitting the most range at an affordable price point pointed me to go to the Model 3 over the Y. Both carseats for the kids in the back have plenty of space for them (2 year and 1 year), and the infotainment screen in the front is pretty top notch, even without android auto or car play. I thought I would have an issue with that since I really love Android Auto in our Outlander but the adjustment was minimal and otherwise easy to use, and with a couple lifehacks there's way more options for entertaining the kids on a prolonged recharge stop if we're traveling far. (Shoutout to abettertheater.com for more streaming options, and abetterrouteplanner.com for more charging options, both to be used in the built-in web browser).

Body wise, the car is flawless. Mine came from the Shanghai factory, surprised about that, but no squeak, no squeals, no panel gaps, the thing is the best built car I've ever owned. Even using the sedan Model 3 gives me enough space in the boot to store the 2 seat pram for both kids. If you opt to pay the Tesla Premium subscription (for me it's 10 AUD, so likely $5 or $7 USD) you get live traffic updates when using the standard maps and navigation. Without it, if I didn't want to pay a subscription, I could just turn on the hotspot on my phone and connect the car's built-in wifi to get those features. I remember having 5GB of data back in South Carolina was not exactly a lot ten years ago, over hear I get 300 per month with no issue but that's apples to oranges.

I've covered a lot of the things I like, but there are a couple that I don't like. The controls for things like wipers, lights, those sorts of things get tucked away in the screen and settings. They've recently released an update where you can control that better through the steering wheel but the minimalism can have its drawbacks. Had to reteach my eyes to look just slightly right for my speedometer instead of ahead of me, a heads-up display would be nice but isn't there yet. Also, the turn radius is massive even for a sedan, even bigger for a SUV like the Y. YMMV but I've found myself doing more 3 point turns than U turns if I need to turn around, whereas my old Chevy Cruise used to do the same turns in a much smaller space (11 meters for u-turn in the Model 3).

Hope some of this helps, sorry if it's not region-specific enough.

Thanks for providing actual feedback I was hoping for

Very much appreciated.

I don't have anything against electric cars, but where do

1

Jun 26, 2023, 10:24 PM

folks think over 90% of that electricity comes from? And what's the life expectancy of those batteries...six years, then 20K to replace them?

Re: I don't have anything against electric cars, but where do

Jun 27, 2023, 9:52 AM

I read a study on making tesla batteries. The amount of co2 off gassing was equal to 8 years of operation of a gas powered vehicle.
