I urge any fans of that Lee Child book series to tune in to the Amazon Prime series that just dropped, named simply REACHER. This Reacher is not a shrimp like Tom Cruise, nor a brunette. He is the 6'5" Ahnold Swartzenegger type muscled dirty blonde monster the books all speak of. (OK, so Alan Ritchson is "only" 6'2" tall, but somehow, they make him look HUGE. And the muscles are NOT fake.)
Wife and I binge watched the first four episodes yesterday, and will probably binge the rest of them either today or tomorrow. I always thought that SOMEWHERE, there had to be an actor who could actually bring Reacher to life. If Hollywood has any sense at all, Ritchson would be the star of any future Jack Reacher movies, not an over the hill Tom Cruise, who, to me was never really believable in the part to begin with.
miscast. I'm glad that image in my head has been replaced.
- The author met his wife in a grocery store. She was wanting something off a top shelf, and he is tall, so he reached up and got it. They started dating, married, and she frequently asked him to get things off shelves, calling him "my reacher", later just "reacher". So, of course ...
- The author is British (lives in the US). A family joke started about things in France being 'le this' and 'le that', and when they had a child they referred to it as "Le Child". So when he wrote his first book about Reacher he used the pen name Lee Child.
So agree. Watched the 1st 3 episodes yesterday and really am enjoying it. My only beef, and it is admittedly a nit I am picking, is that Alan is a little young. IIRC, Reacher is a retiree and has been out for a few years. That would make him 45ish. Alan is a little shy of that. Also think his young looks slightly exacerbate the feeling.
In any case, think the series is an excellent recreation and highly recommend.
Understand that is the typical path. Just saying my perception of Reacher was mid-40s to 50. I always thought of some old-school NFL d-lineman - Bob Golic, Art Donovan, Mean Joe Green, #### Butkus. They obviously are too old now, but that is who I pictured.
Just so happens I watched the first episode of this myself last night. Agree on all your points. In my minds eye though I pictured Reacher just a tad older but really liked the show. If you’re reading this and haven’t read the books I highly recommend. I wish reacher was a real dude.
I'm in the minority that actually enjoyed the Tom Cruise Reacher movies. Of course the height was all wrong and seemed weird since the size of Reacher is one of the defining characteristics, and the over the top cockiness came across as smarmy or glib which was a bit tiring. But overall, the movies were alright for what they were.
But I'm about 6 episodes into the TV series and the quiet demeanor and size of Alan Ritchson fits the Reacher character so much better. Folks who have read the book will recognize just how often the books include the line "Reacher said nothing" and they've done a good job keeping his word wasting down.
Production values are a bit low as the action sequences are very clearly backlot style sets, but that's to be expected from a streaming only show of this budget.
But overall, I'm quite enjoying it, and they've done a good job thus far translating the Killing Floor novel.
We've seen two so far. Not binging to make them last by watching one a day. Love the book series. This actor is great. I always had a younger Liam Nieson type in mind as reach. My favorite part in the books is when "Reacher said nothing"
I have read all of the Reacher books and I’m re-reading Killing Floor now. Cruise was a bad choice for Reacher. I will start watching the tv series when I finish re-reading Killing Floor. I hope it follows the book.
Spot on 76er! Actually just read my first Jack Reacher book (Wanted Man) and three things happened. First, I ordered a dozen more (abebooks.com - used paperbacks @ $3.75 each w/free shipping. Second, vowed I would never watch another Tom Cruise version. And three, started watching the Amazon Prime series.
