Wife needs a new SUV with a third row. Acura MDX?

Outside of the ######, decent car?
She also likes the Atlas, Explorer and Volvo xc 90.
She test drove them and of course fell in love. My mistake by telling her to test drive. Could’ve saved 8K with the Atlas.

I almost bought a used one but ending up buying a new Acadia

in 2018 instead. The Acadia was nice, it had 2 warranty issues though and I sold it with about 42K miles.
Maybe I woulda bought the new MDX, but I didn't have that kinda money back then.

I like Acuras but would not drive an MDX

too much of a chick car to me.
So if was just my wife's car that would be okay, we would proably use my truck for trips anyway.
She drives an aspec TL. It's a very nice car. We had a type S before that.
If you get an MDX make sure to get at least an aspec or above. With the TL we like the aspec better than the technology package and they don't make a type S anymore, with then MDX I'd probably go with the advance package, a little higher if I could swing the cost.
They don't have any good financing deals with an MDX, demand must be high. I'm not financing over 1% on a car.

Always tell them you aren't sure if you are going to finance
Jan 10, 2022, 9:04 AM
[ in reply to I told the man I'm payin straight cash, how much of a deal?! ] |

but make it sound like you want to let them find the financing for you. "I might pay cash, but I'll want you to find me some financing to see which way I want to go. I want my payments as low as possible but I don't have a number in mind. I do want an out the door price though before I make that decision"
They will make money off of third party financing. They will give you a lower price if they think they can get you to take their financing.
They will give you a number. You will say great, I guess I want to pay cash. They will say that number is for a financed car, your price will be 2000 or whatever higher.
Just say, I thought we had a deal, I'll find someplace else. Get up and walk out. They will call you within 2 minutes and say they got your number approved.
Then when the head salesman, which is the finance guy, tries to add anything. You just say no to everything.

Unless the guy was just lying to me.
I left the dealership and he never called me or anything.
Truly felt like the price was the price with Acura.

that's the point. You don't want them to give you a price

based on a low financing. They will get financing from a third party bank and get a percentage on top of it. The bank will pay them a percentage of the rate as a "finders fee". You want them to think they are going to get that fee from the third party bank.
Financing deals will only come from the manufacturer. They are easy to find. They won't lower the price for manufacturer financing because they don't get a kick back.

Nothing you’re going to see or interact with once you’re in the car, like the tech package is.

We were on our way to get an XC90

Had called the dealer to let them know we were on the way to sign. We made the mistake of stopping at the Subaru dealership and ended up with an Ascent.
Wife-of wasn't a huge fan of the minimalism of Volvo, even with the safety features. It was also a similar size to the Jeep we were trying to replace, and we agreed the Jeep was too small.

Even though her company pays for it, we still drove by the Bentley dealer to tell them we wouldn't be taking delivery of our new Bentayga SUV before ultimately heading to the Subaru dealer.

Always leave and come back later. That puts you in a better bargaining situation. When you leave the first time you can take exactly the car you want and have it priced at a couple other dealers. Just tell them this is the car I want. I've already looked elsewhere. What is your lowest price for me to come in and get that car no questions no changes just sign and leave.
It will be lower than the cost that you already negotiated. Go back to your dealer and tell them Joe says this is the cost for this car. I might give my dealer 500 above what Joes price was just to keep closer to home and also they did a lot more legwork than an internet price.

we test drove the MDX

those new ones are bad ###. wife liked the Highlander more. seems like the MDX was too nice to buy while pregnant and looking for a car to have kids aged 0 - 5ish.
the Highlander Platinum has all the same features (minus the trackpad radio thing by the gear shifter) and it's about 10k less. ours feels like a lexus w/ a different badge on the steering wheel.
She hated the Atlas. We got some friends w/ the volvo and it seems too Range Rover-y to me. I like the Explorers, but she didn't even test drive em.

A deer decided we needed a truck.
It was a 2010, ran great with little more than typical maintenance.
I have an '06 TL with 230K miles.

We had an Explorer Platinum...traded it in for
Jan 10, 2022, 9:44 AM

a Subaru Ascent. Lost some nice to have features (massaging seats, foot activated liftgate) and a lot of space in the 3rd row, but kept all the critical stuff (lane assist, adaptive cruise control, etc). The 3rd row is good enough for us. The Explorer had lots of leg room in the very back, plus a deep well for cargo, but it started doing some weird s*** early and I started to worry about the reliability. The cruise control module failed in the first 3 months, the radio/SYNC system wouldn't come on sometimes, etc.
Anyway, I like the Ascent. Disclaimer- I am a lesbian.

2017 model. I loved it before switching to a truck but it was a little bulky up front and my wife struggled to park it when she drove it. The new Explorers look pretty bad ###.
Mine has an Acadia and she likes it a lot, which is surprising because she always preferred sedans. I think the Explorer had a roomier third row but the Acadia is great in the second row. She went the model that has captain's chairs and it's deceptively roomy.
I know you didn't have the Acadia on that list, but you may want to give it a look.

not done well.
I'm down to Infiniti QX80, Tahoe/Yukon (don't love the new style), LR Disco, and a possible 3rd Lexus GX460 (went from a tahoe to that and haven't looked back, love the size and have never have a moment in the shop).
