Don't believe Clemson/Dabo/BOT will readily leave ACC for SEC..

Jul 8, 2022, 11:37 AM

or the BIG imho since other options are probably being discussed and/or formulated First.

Still, I light joining the SEC idea but know the "overall" competition level will increase (which won't scare Dabo) but the possibility of reaching our yearly win goals will probably decrease..thus less conference championships and/or CFP trips.

Then again, recruiting may even pick up more due to some athletes wanting to play in the SEC and would consider Clemson and thus that extra edge might be an equalizer.

Whatever, don't see Clemson in the BIG!

Note: Thinking about Bama, Ole Missy, UF, Ga, Auburn, AK, Tam, MO, OK & LSU coming to DV#1 makes me smile really big..

but not Vandy or uscjr!! Not sure about KY~

A&M grad who works for an ACC school here. Clemson needs to get their ducks in a row to move to the SEC and Clemson should be proactive. Dabo wants the easiest road to the College Football Playoffs, which definitely isn't through the SEC. The long term interest of Clemson and the short term interest of Dabo and the current football squad don't line up.

I'm sure the SEC wants Clemson. The legal wranglings of the Grant of Rights is the main issue otherwise.

Just about everyone headed there has been leveraged or hated where they were. A&M went because their daddy Longhorns and pervie uncle Oklahoma abused them. Now they are coming back to spend quality time with you at the arcade.

Let's not pretend the SEC is anything special or anything more than a collection of 2-3 Top teams and then a bunch of middling and fading powers.

Jul 8, 2022, 4:39 PM

We absolutely need to be in the SEC. That’s the only option. The only real practical option. It’s also the smart thing to do. We should’ve joined a very long time ago. We should’ve joined instead of South Carolina. Anyone that doesn’t understand that is an idiot. Sorry. Facts!

You people are letting ridiculous loyalty to the ACC or your hatred for the SEC because of ESPN and other stupid emotional issues cloud your judgment.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, we'll NEVER win a national championship

Jul 9, 2022, 2:03 AM

in the ACC!! Lol.

You do realize the teams we did better than to win (25% of the national titles in the CFP era are still the same teams? It's not like those teams will magically get better because of new conference alignments, and we will get worse. Just because the B1G and SEC are getting bigger doesn't mean more of their teams will make the playoffs. They will knock each other out.

It will still be the OSUs, Bamas, and Clemsons. The top teams in a conference. Texas isn't getting in the CFP just because they'll be in the SEC, and neither will UCLA just because they're in the B1G. Oklahoma will no longer have run of the Big 12, and they likely get cut out of all those CFP appearances as well. Sure, a Texas or Oklahoma or USC or UCLA might eventually make the playoffs, but now they're going to have to beat Alabama or OSU during the regular season to do it. So what are they gaining?

More money? Yup. But then again Texas and Texas A&M have been making more money than some small countries... how has it made them better football programs?

Similarly, every single B1G and SEC team has made ~ $200 million more dollars (at least) over the last decade than has Clemson, yet somehow poor ol Clemson with our meager $35 million annual revenue has built one of the top two programs in America. We have some of the best facilities, the best coaches, and tons of the nation's best players want to play for us. Do we need more money to survive? Well, when schools start putting amusement parks on their football grounds, then we may have trouble fitting that into the budget, but until then, how will we fall off the map just because of bigger conferences and even more money?

Re: Don't believe Clemson/Dabo/BOT will readily leave ACC for SEC..

Jul 8, 2022, 12:20 PM

I think they’re already looking at their options to leave. Ultimately, you have to do what’s best for your own school and program. The ACC ain’t it.

In the past, we’d always hear Dabo singing the praises of the ACC and what a great conference it was (what else could he say). It’s been silence, and with realignment and survivability of the ACC and Clemsons articles now on Tigernet - it’s not just smoke, but fire.

Dabo would love to join the SEC, he would enjoy the challenge and prove all past doubters wrong.

Re: Don't believe Clemson/Dabo/BOT will readily leave ACC for SEC..

Agreed. Nothing about Dabo tells me he's worried about any increase in competition. He also played in the SEC so I'd imagine part of him would find it exciting to coach there as well.

Re: Don't believe Clemson/Dabo/BOT will readily leave ACC for SEC..

Jul 9, 2022, 7:31 AM

Agree with what you are saying, but most posts for the $EC overlook/ignore the fact that Dabo is a staunch advocate for the value of a college education. The $EC would be a step in the wrong direction for that priority.

That said, I sure would prefer games with SEC teams vs any of the other options due to proximity, tradition & weather.

Clemson has the potential to compete and maybe, just maybe, win more in a league that many people consider to be top-notch.

Why is it that people like you automatically think that Clemson will have a hard time in the SEC?

I look at a move to the SEC, if it happens, as an opportunity and not a hindrance.

Re: Don't believe Clemson/Dabo/BOT will readily leave ACC for SEC..

Jul 9, 2022, 8:38 AM

Look this is simple. Follow the money.

Since 1992 when SCAR joined the SEC they’ve enjoyed greater revenue each year. BUT it’s been 5-10-15% more. We’ve had no problems staying ahead of our paltry poultry neighbors. As we move forward the TV money will change drastically. By 2030, the SEC schools are projected to get roughly 100 million per year. ACC schools will get roughly 50 million. That’s 100% more for you sociology majors.

That changes things. It’s unacceptable. Somehow, Clemson has to find a way to keep up with that kind of revenue or we won’t be able to compete going forward. I don’t care how it happens:
Join the SEC, fine
Join the BIG, fine
Give Clemson 100 million and let the rest of the ACC split the difference, fine
Clemson goes independent and inks a deal with fox, fine AND…
Clemson keeps all the playoff money when there 12-16 teams every year, fine.

Get the revenue or sue on the vine.

Re: Don't believe Clemson/Dabo/BOT will readily leave ACC for SEC..

Jul 8, 2022, 12:39 PM

I agree with you LBB, that there is hesitancy on the BOT, President, and possibly Dabo, to leave the ACC. For some reason, there has always been some weird loyalty to the ACC on the part of old school, status quo Clemson people. Never understood this mentality. The ACC has never been proactive in helping itself or its members. They’ve been content to just see what happens and just manage to survive based on basketball history and Clemson’s football success.
I believe Dabo knows it will be tougher in a more competitive conference to reach the playoffs. But what choice is left? Stay in a clown conference and be relegated second tier status? Or make the move ASAP to the $EC or B10 to improve and succeed for the long term?

Bill...I think they will readily leave if they think we will be disadvantaged over the next 15 years. No doubt. Sure loyalty matters, but at some point you got to CYA.

For the life of me...I don't understand how the ACC can save itself. Even if ND joined (almost 0% chance of happening), it doesn't solve many of the long-term issues. We have got to be proactive and I'm up for joining the B1G if its the best fit.

.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Screw Calford.

There are two scenarios:

Jul 8, 2022, 4:53 PM

1. The B1G and SEC move to expand, effectively destroying the rest of P5, and if they do that Clemson and Notre Dame are at the top of the selection process. We will get invited to the SEC, because we draw extremely well on TV, and it's a geographical fit. We'd have to jump at that offer because the rest of P5 would be decimated.

2. The B1G and SEC remain at 16 teams, leaving the other P5 conferences to expand and create a "P4"... 16 teams in each conference.

I continue to believe the idea of 20+ team superconferences would be a terrible idea. First of all it eliminate 25 current P5 teams, and second of all it would reduce the fervor for college football in general.

I personally think that ultimately the ACC will expand. I do not believe two 20+ team superconferences will come to fruition. Too many things fall apart doing that. There are 130 teams in the FBS. Can't chuck 90 of them out.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You wanna bet 80-90 of the 130 can't be chucked out? IF Skanky

Jul 9, 2022, 8:16 AM

has his way, that is exactly what will happen! He doesn't give a damm about what is best for college football as a whole...only what he thinks is best for the SEC! And IF he thinks 20-24 teams in the SEC is best for the mighty SEC, then that is what he'll push for. If that happens, then the B10 will follow suit!

Then what? You'll have those two conferences competing for the tier one national championship, and the remaining 80 teams will have their own "tier two" national championship!

The sad thing is, all that is terrible for all the other sports, especially the non-revenue ones. It would have been much better if the current conferences had stayed as is for all sports except football, and the big boy 40-50 football programs pulled out of the NCAA and formed their own league, for football only!
