Different reactions for different age groups.

Sep 23, 2012, 12:49 AM

My dad (almost 50), couldn't understand how a defense could possibly be this bad. Meanwhile, I (20 years old) took it with a grain of salt. I guess it is just a different age of football and a different time at Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Im 19 and I dont understand how a defense can be this bad

Sep 23, 2012, 12:51 AM

I dont need to have seen the great Clemson defense's to know this one is just bad right now

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well obviously I can see that this defense is not good too.

Sep 23, 2012, 12:56 AM

I guess my point was more about expectations. I kind of expected our defense to be this bad while he didn't.

Perhaps I have the same views as you on coaching; however, I am not going to post all of that on here because people are going to believe what they want regardless of what you tell them. I think we probably have some similar views, we just handle them differently.

2 out of 3 Division Titles is not Mediocre!

1 out of 3 Conference Titles is not Mediocre!

Our Defense is WELL below Mediocre!

There are 8 more games!

You've really hit on something here Pride

Sep 23, 2012, 12:57 AM

I'm almost 50, was a freshman in '81, and I'm so used to incredible Clemson defenses. The defense the last few years is something us older folks can't understand...defense was always a signature part of the program at Clemson. Tough getting used to being "boat-raced" in games, to the tune of 70 or 49 points.

Oh and btw, it's "grade of slaw", not "grain of salt", just giving you a heads-up on the Tigernet way.

you know , back in the day when each team only had 1 receiver to cover and only passed for 200 yards a game. They're delusional and think it's because of great Defense, when in reality Offenses have changed 100 percent since then. By the way , I'm a little older than your dad , but I have the sense that those like Lowcountry don't have. Ford's D would get ripped all to shreds by today's Clemson offense.

Re: Different reactions for different age groups.

Sep 23, 2012, 1:08 AM

I am very passionate about Clemson football and upsets me when you see your team get embarrassed on defense.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm 50 and probably went to Clemson when your Dad did ...

Sep 23, 2012, 1:19 AM

As far as MrTMT's comments, to put it in today's perspective, Ford's Defense was then what Alabama's is today. They were much better and much tougher than the Fla State Defense we played today.

That said, it is true Chad Morris' Offense especially Tajh Boyd, Sammy, Ellington and Nuk would present alot of challenges to Ford's Defenses.

The problem with today's Tigers team is that even our unimaginative Ford Offenses would have scored 40-plus against today's collectively untalented Defense. No doubt your Dad is an awesome guy ... it's hard for all of us middle-aged Clemson fans to watch this level of mediocrity on Defense when from 1978-1992 we were feared and uber-talented and after a game like tonight the term "pansies" best describes the Defense.

I am sure you are much more grounded and better off for it, but I hope you get to enjoy at least one great National Championship run in your lifetime ... and if we're real lucky, in your Dad's and mine. Good luck !

Yeah because losing 49-0 would have been better last night. That was the score of RR's game last night btw.

Well, IAP, I'm certainly one of the older types, since I

Sep 23, 2012, 8:22 AM

graduated from CU in 1969! The unique thing about Clemson concerns expectations. I was already in my 30's when we won the NC in January 1982, and once you've been to the mountaintop and seen the view, two things happen: you want to see it again, and you believe that if you could make it once, you should be able to again. There are a lot of fallacies in that kind of thinking over a 30 year span, which primarily have to do with the nature of the game itself and mindset. Having experienced literally hundreds of Clemson football games over a 50 year period, I tend to regard our program with a broad overview, which means I look at its progression historically.

My general perception, looking at our program since the Ford era, is twofold: misguided coaching hires and a lack of total commitment to our athletic programs by our administration. Since those have been discussed ad nauseum on TNet, I'll fast forward to our present situation. I have posted repeatedly that I believe the final verdict on Coach Swinney's tenure is out. The successes or failures of any organization are directly attributable to the person in charge - in this case, Coach Swinney. Thus far, he has proven himself praiseworthy as to his character. He has accomplished noteworthy achievements. I look at his leadership as a work in progress; thus, the ultimate question is how much time will the Clemson faithful be willing to grant that work to produce a national title contender.

Thus far, I am willing to see how our season progresses this year. Our recruiting is quite admirable; our offense is in capable hands, although it will still need tweaking; our defense is, of course, our Achilles Heel. I never expected BV or anyone else to enter our program, wave a magic wand and produce a stellar D overnight; BV (IMO) has the pedigree to do so, but it will take more time. I believe the moral leadership of our program is outstanding. But I will caution anyone: regardless of the end results this season, NO COACH WILL LAST AT CLEMSON if he allows our history of domination of USC to reverse...period. Thus, Dabo will survive another year IMO, should we witness a four-pete...but not, God forbid, if there's a five-pete. Why? The "old fa@rts" won't sit still for it. I've witnessed the power of the older crowd during my 50 years' experience with CU, and say what you will, THEY WILL NOT TOLERATE continual losses to USC...period.

Lastly, no one wants Dabo Swinney to succeed more than I. At this point I am willing to grant the additional time to see how this "work in progress" proceeds. But I do not want our program to coast along for another five or six years unless this nagging question is laid to rest: Which Clemson team will show up for which game? I might add I am enthusiastic to see our younger folks participating in these discussions, and, thus, sincerely appreciate your efforts!

intended, but I think sometimes too many of us revert to knee-jerk reactions from wins/losses without considering an overview. Our academic and athletic programs will only be enriched with continual efforts of fine people like yourself, and, fortunately, you have many years left to do so. I am encouraged.
