14 years at Clemson, how many more for CDS?

Oct 13, 2022, 2:46 PM

Even with the new contract, I think once his son graduates this year it will be even harder to keep him here. Not sure what his ambitions really are anymore, other than to keep building on his legacy.

I kind of suspect he wouldn't mind retiring from the game early. Even though it's been a great run, I imagine every year the CFB grind gets a bit less fun.

Whatever happens, I'd like to see him exit gracefully though, and I'm sure he will. He's been a great leader for a long time.

What a great time for a post like that!

I hope Dabo hangs on until the FSU game is over.

Don’t get the feeling. He will coach at Clemson into his late 60’s unless the NFL bug gets him. Hopefully not.

I think he enjoys the college atmosphere and teaching and helping young men more than the actual game, so I don't see him ever trying NFL. I think he stays until he's at least 60, then will go to TV.

I don’t think he will ever Coach in the NFL. It’s not his type of game.

When one of his son's gives him a grandchild... I think that will be the first test as to whether he will be a Bobby Bowden/Go until you cant type of guy. But I think he has a long time ahead of him yet.

Coach Howard made it 29 years

Oct 13, 2022, 3:09 PM

but that was a much different era.

It's a 24/7, 365 day a year business now. There's 1,000,000x as much pressure and everyone wants a piece. Got to keep IPTAY happy, the board happy, the players happy, the recruits happy.....the never satisfied fans.

In addition to the 14 years as head coach, he's actually been here since 2003, so this next year will be his 20th season working at Clemson. That's a long, long run in this era for a coach.

Re: Coach Howard made it 29 years

Oct 13, 2022, 3:21 PM

Amazingly, with a 15-0 record this year, Dabo could tie Coach Howard's win total at 165.

Never thought I'd ever see anyone come close to it.

Coach Howard's entire tenure but it is hard to imagine Dabo has already been here almost half as long. I will tell you the older you get the faster it goes too.

Well, I happen to totally disagree with you.

First, he enjoys the game too much. Second, he enjoys working and developing young kids too much, both as football players and as men. Third, he enjoys working with his staff and developing new coaches to carry on his legacy--recruiting & developing young men to play winning football in the "right" manner. He's built a great program and culture, and I think he's having too much fun seeing it grow and attacking every new challenge that's thrown his way!

Just MHO, of course.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He’s actually been here 20 years.***

As Mr Dabo likes to say “There’s nothing less important than the score at the half”. Given that I’ll say he stays another 14 years as HBC.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo loves Clemson and I believe he will retire here.

Oct 13, 2022, 4:12 PM

I truly don’t see him leaving to take another job, not even at Alabama.

CFB has changed so much the last few years. I'm sure Dabo doesn't like the direction it's going. If he loses his drive and enjoyment for the game I could see him retiring. Let's hope he's here for many more years.

Hey I guess the haha confused you. Dabo will retire when he's ### good and ready. Sence his passion is still burning hot. We would be lucky to hold on to him for as long as we can. He undoubted loves Clemson and so do I.

Oct 13, 2022, 4:59 PM [ in reply to You must be one of those ]

and maybe it was deserved for the way I framed the initial question. But this not about me, as much as you want it to be.

I was just wondering aloud what must be going on in his analysis of the present career trajectory in a CFB landscape that has drastically changed since he first started. Maybe he wants to build the dynasty to end all dynasties. Who knows. I'd be up for that.

What would you do?

Imagine your employer tells you that you've put in 14 awesome years, your team has shattered company wide sales records, they've won department of the year a couple times, and then says , "Btw, how much longer are you going to be here?".

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can imagine that....

Oct 14, 2022, 10:28 AM

You might not remember the Danny Ford era, lol. We were on a good run under Coach Ford, and CU President Max Lennon didn't ask when Danny was leaving, he had the AD just tell him he was leaving. That was back when schools were under serious existential pressure from an NCAA that was truly a ruthless dictator, and those schools weren't totally dependent on the cash flow coming in from football sales. Times have obviously changed.

My question is what would motivate Coach to leave when he's on such a long run of success. It seems counterintuitive to most people here but successful people can get burned out.

They can also have ambitions beyond their current fiefdoms, so it also wouldn't surprise me if he took on a new challenge. My guess for the top reason would be because CFB has become too ridiculous with NIL, mafia-like racketeering, truly insane rival fans, and the general political climate.

I hope he stays, he's been a great man for Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up
