Yep. That was pretty clear. He didn't like CJ as his coach. Dabo has dug a hole. It's probably not that easy to can CJ.

doesn’t sign at Clemson.
That being said, the guy is next level unintelligent. If he wasn’t an extremely gifted 5-star athlete that can literally change the course of a football program, he probably doesn’t get accepted into the Clemson Life program.
Until Dabo gets rid of these yes men and former players with no prior coaching experience, we are going to continue to suck.

but the "unintelligent" argument makes no sense when the opposite could be said about Elliott and yet there's still a ton of criticism about his ability to coach/playcall.

Who wants an unintelligent coach and hires to it? I would assume precisely no one. At the same time, intelligence is no guarantee of success.

The idea of "intelligence" is, in itself, pretty nebulous so I'm not sure it makes for the best argument against a coach one way or the other. If a coach is knowledgeable and seemingly skilled at their job does it matter what they scored on their SATs or how they'd do in calculus (as if that were the only true tests of intelligence)?
Again, I think the inexperienced coaching argument makes sense, especially at a place like Clemson where we are used to competing at a high level.

Wonderlic? Furthermore, does the function of a coach require more or less intellectual function (which is really what the Wonderlic measures moreso than intelligence) than that of a player on the field?
What I'm saying next has zero to do with CJ as a person, let's be clear. But professionally speaking, his 10 Wonderlic score roughly corresponds, IQ-wise to someone with a mild mental disability. Is that a slam dunk on him not being able to do the job? Of course not, there are exceptions to every rule. However, are the odds extremely low that he has the mental agility and acuity needed to come in as a completely inexperienced coach and hit the ground running on the broad set of demands on him in the role? Yeah, they're extremely low, and one of the big demands on intellectual function is working with a broad group of personalities in a way that effectively understands the individuals and adapts one's approach to get the most out of the working relationship. 4 RB's fleeing for the portal tells me that part of the equation isn't clicking, and it's just an overly convenient, odds-ignoring argument to declare all of these guys bitter, low talent quitters. There's one thing in common with all 4 of them, and one thing only....CJ.

Do they administer wonderlic tests to coaches?
Oct 29, 2021, 7:30 PM

Did Spiller's low Wonderlic score keep him off the field or being drafted? Tom Brady scored a 33, not bad, but nowhere close to Greg McElroy's score of 48. Who had the better career? What does that say about the predictive power of the wonderlic?
This point you brought up struck me as especially interesting, "one of the big demands on intellectual function is working with a broad group of personalities in a way that effectively understands the individuals and adapts one's approach to get the most out of the working relationship."
To me, that's emotional/interpersonal intelligence as much as it is traditional logic-based and probably not something the Wonderlic tests. And it may be something Spiller is or isn't good at. I don't know because I don't know Spiller outside of him as a player.
As for why the players bolted, it may be something to do with Spiller being a bad coach, or it's depth chart related, or interpersonal reasons for the players, or a number of other issues we aren't privy to. But, I'm pretty confident in saying one of the reasons they aren't leaving is because they think Spiller is "dumb" or because of his low Wonderlic score. Also, on this point, we've had a number of QBs leave the team in the last few seasons so should we start questioning Streeter?
Again, I'm not defending Spiller in the sense of saying he should be the RB coach at Clemson. I'm just pushing back at the claim of him having a "slight mental disability" due to his wonderlic score or that that precludes him from possibly being a good coach when we have tons of examples of "intelligent" coaches who fail just as often. Going after Spiller's inexperience is a much stronger argument.

His wonderlic score certainly is not the crux of my argument. I’m just pointing out, going back to your original post, that it’s not a completely poor argument either, and certainly isn’t one negated by the poor performance of others with high intelligence.

with him as coach (because he is inexperienced) and the poor season, I understand why some might try to use the little information we do have to figure out the puzzle. My argument is just that in regards to that piece of the puzzle (his supposed poor intelligence/bad wonderlic score) we can't make any conclusions when there are clear examples of the same results occurring with the exact opposite circumstances. It doesn't negate the other argument, but it sure paints it as flawed.

He didn't specifically say he was run off. He was cautious and didn't want to talk trash. It sounded like he is happy, but was just being honest. It sounded like it was his choice and he didn't see eye to eye with his new RB coach.

He didn’t like some things he saw from the new position coach. There’s a whole lotta possibilities there I tend to skew it being in CJ’s side of the fence when we’re up to 4 RB’s gone under him now.

CJ is not worried about his football job as long as he keeps his job as Herschel’s speech coach. Things are going well there for sure.
