the few, if not the only, I have seen where Leon Russell is not playing piano. Is playing lead guitar here, a thing he almost never did on stage.

Did they make a movie of MD&E? or am I dreaming about that?

maybe I remember the Joe Cocker movie where they showed some footage.

A little of both, I think. There are a few clips floating

around of that show, and some clips of the subsequent concert tour that was made into the double album "Leon Live", which was basically the same show with some gospel tunes added, which reflected an aspect of Leon's life many don't know about. A youtube search will find the few clips that are out there. I have done a lot of searching for complete videos of either of those shows, and the only thing I found was a sketchy looking site where someone claimed to have the entire "Leon Live" video for sale, but it looked doubtful. If anyone knows of anything, I would love to know.

I'm a bit of a Leon junkie, since age 17, then 30 years later our daughter goes to his high school in Tulsa. I volunteered to pick her up just for that reason, which is a stupid reason when you think about it. Or even if you don't.

He was the piano Glen Campbell, playing and arranging for everybody that was anybody, from Sinatra to Specter. It was the MD&E show that sort of got Leon out of the studio: Cocker had a tour booked in the US but at the last minute couldn't get the band in - drug issues, I think. So who could salvage it at the last minute? They asked Leon, he put a band together, and the rest is history. Or maybe Leon had already released one album, I'm not sure. All that happened at about the same time. Anyway, the MD&E and Leon LIve shows made several careers, such as Rita Coolidge, who was one of the backup singers.

Leon was almost reclusive, so not much is known about him directly. However, I've found several interviews of people who were with the band or were friends of his back in that day, and they all tell the same story, that while drug and alcohol abuse was all around, Leon was not a part of it. One friend said Leon was mostly disappointed in people, not personally, but because he just wanted to get into the studio and work, and the drugs was sand in those gears. He hated it.
