Clemson, not the ACC. Bama is a product of Bama, not the SEC. Oh St is a product of Oh St , not the Big Ten. Top tiered programs are elite and would be elite regardless of conference affiliation. Clemson has competed and beaten the top programs in the nation over the last 5 years and do not need a crutch of a conference to hold them up.

Conference touters are like the skid marks in my underwear. They stink, stain and break down the very fabric that holds them together.

It's how proud losers talk.

And no losers are prouder than the squawking chickens.

Unfortunately,Clemson has to play in a conference,The ACC
which is perceived to be the weak sister of the 5 power conferences.
Alabama, meanwhile is a member of the SEC,regarded as the most powerful
of those power five.
It should be noted the reason for that perception
is the SEC produced 9 of the National Champions during the 14 year run known as the BCS Era.
Ohio State, from The Big 10 was the defending National Champion until dethroned by Iowa.
Now,in regards to the crutch,you are correct.Clemson doesn't need a crutch,but they do need
a conference affiliation to play for the"Natty" because only Notre Dame,a product of Notre Dame
can play for the National Championship without being an "actual" member of a conference.

Clemson football is tops in spite of the ACC,

not because of the ACC.
