Clemson Basketball: The No Fun Zone

Feb 10, 2014, 5:45 PM

Another entry from that blog I posted a couple weeks ago. I thought the guy made some good points about how our offense looks and what not. I really agreed with the point of how we could really use Devin Coleman right now. The guy had a good offensive repetoire. The blog was actually posted yesterday before the Syracuse game, but I didn't get a chance to post it here until now. Anyway, I would recommend giving it a read.

I agree with his point on letting Devin Coleman go, however I disagree with some of his points on Clemson's offense. I actually enjoy watching this team play and think that they are playing pretty good basketball this year. As a basketball fan, ugly basketball is also scoring 70 but giving up 90. A win is a win, and this team has overachieved with a 6-4 record in the conference.

Brownell knows that he can't run up and down with this team and win in the ACC. He's playing to his strengths.

You have to give Brownell credit for coaching this team up. While I disagree with how he handled Devin Coleman, I have to give him credit for a great coaching job so far this season.

I disagree that he mishandled Coleman.

People seem to forget that Coleman did not regain all of his speed after the Achilles injury. That greatly hampered his defense, and as we all know, you won't play much for Brownell if your defense isn't up to par. Coleman had a few nice offensive games this year, but they were against teams not nearly as athletic as those we face in the ACC. The general consensus seems to be that Coleman would have struggled against the ACC teams, both on offense and especially on defense.

I was as excited as anyone about Coleman this year, but I have to believe that Brownell knows whether his players are ready for the ACC or not. And besides, Brownell didn't force Coleman to transfer.

Exactly...how are we winning this year-defense

Feb 10, 2014, 8:19 PM

that is not changing this year even if we had Coleman. The fact that Coleman's defense was lacking(yes the injury greatly affected this) meant he couldn't guard the way we need to this year. The fact we have 3 pure shooters who will join us next year also weighed in to Coleman's decision I am sure. He was not forced out, it was his decision to leave

If we try and go up and down with teams we lose

Feb 10, 2014, 6:19 PM

If we make other teams play at our pace, we have been successful. It seems pretty obvious to me that our skill is on the defensive end, and not on the offensive side of the ball. A coaches job is to utilize the skills of the team to best accomplish victory, which is what our offense is set up to do right now. Control the clock, control the tempo, frustrate and wear teams down.

I thought we had some excellent offensive plays vs 'Cuse

Feb 10, 2014, 7:28 PM

I think we left about 17 points on the court by not converting 50% of easy looks ...
- About 6 easy baskets underneath that with better shots and / or hands most teams convert- 6 points
- About 4 shots from high post at foul line - 4 points
- About 4 offensive rebounds not converted - 4 points
- About two uncontested threes - 3 points

IMO we need some inside players to convert and just 4 to 6 more jump shots. A few transition baskets would also help. It is not difficult to imagine this team jumping 12 to 16 points in scoring average.

For the life of me I can not figure out how anybody can say stuff like "he would not have scored against ACC caliber teams". Is Virginia, Wake Forest, still ACC teams? I do not know what he would have done against Duke, Pitt, Syracuse, etc. but I sure would have like to have seen. Striper fan keeps stating that we are getting these pure shooters but we hear that EVERY YEAR. I understand the defense first mentality but nobody should come off their best three game stretch (regardless of opponent) and not see the floor....particularly when the competition is Arkansas and UMASS (I'm sorry he did get it one of the games when it was 2 seconds left).

Welp, still seems true even after the past 2 games.***
