Cal/Stanford/SMU all agree to play for little to no payout

Aug 18, 2023, 10:55 AM

https://www.si.com/college/georgiatech/football/conference-realignment-could-a-decision-by-the-acc-on-cal-and-stanford-be-coming-soon

If this is the case and ESPN is willing to give the ACC an equal share per school it could be the answer for FSU and Clemson. 30-40 million per school gives the conference an addition 90-120 million per year to split between the remaining 14 teams. If they are willing to consider unequal revenue sharing that could put the football schools closer to 70 million through 2036 without diminishing the existing schools. It would still likely result in schools leaving in the early 2030s but it could maintain the conference until then.

If they really are going to add someone, I'd invite Stanford and SMU and leave Cal out.

Why SMU? And before you say Dallas, how many people

Aug 18, 2023, 11:13 AM

In Dallas actually watch them play? And how many people are going to watch Clemson play wake forest on the Warner brothers network or whatever our ghetto network is. I don’t like cal either. SMU is trash.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Outside your area it matters how many people are watching

Aug 18, 2023, 11:33 AM

Which is where Clemson’s value would be, but the inside your “area” $ dynamics are based on getting/keeping your network on linear cable and streaming services like YouTubeTV/Hulu/Sling/DirectTV Now. There is a per subscriber component that brings more $. Often that amount differs based on if there is a team in the market. Also opens up ad angles for ACCN which is co-owned by the league and ESPN. Honestly, if those schools will agree to that and the ACC schools agree to a model that get Clemson closer to B1G/SEC then that is probably a win. I just don’t see the breaking of GOR being done without some astronomical price tag that could be worse tha. Riding this out at least to the next wave of contracts for those other leagues. There are so many other factors still in play for the next 5-10 years. Amateur/employment status of collegiate, a likely split of the top football schools separate from other sports, etc. I believe the difference in $ if it stays as is will likely impact the non-football sports. If the difference is say $30mil then $15mil is mens and $15mil is women’s based on current Title IX. Of that $15mil men’s , let’s say $10mil is football. Clemson would have no problem competing with a $10mil/yr football deficit to the other schools and could easily make it up elsewhere if needed

Also, meant to mention that the biggest reason to

Aug 18, 2023, 11:42 AM

still leave these teams out is that dissolution of the ACC would no longer be a possibility if you add them. Right now it seems the ACC could be within 1 vote of dissolution(perhaps the only way out of GOR without cost 100s of millions of $). If you add those teams it would then take a 10-8 vote instead of 8-7 and that would be impossible.

pill. It's going to create headaches getting involved with California politics. At least Stanford is private and might get excluded from any whackadoodle state laws.

So three programs that doesn't have good football, will have worse football due to finances. That will greatly improve the ACC's product (sarcasm).

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

It should NOT be split equally. It needs to be a performanced based payout.

I cannot envision a scenario...

Aug 18, 2023, 11:06 AM

where the ACC adding Cal, Stanford, and SMU would motivate ESPN to pay the ACC any more money. ESPN has contract with the ACC that extends through 2036. What incentive does ESPN have to renegotiate it based on the addition of Cal, Stanford and SMU? I think the answer is ZERO!!!!

Re: I cannot envision a scenario...

Aug 18, 2023, 11:11 AM

I think the incentive is propping up the ACC to keep eyeballs watching and making it further difficult for the crown jewels to leave. I think Clemson and FSU will eventually come up with a plan to exit but I have no idea how long that will take. Once they do exit, the ACC will become pretty dead to viewers who will be watching other games on other networks.

These west coast teams will screw everything up b/c of the people running the schools. In an increasingly polarizing/political world I say stay away from these groups. Let them do their own thing. It sounds petty but no doubt it will eventually be an issue that we'll have to live with. Cal Berkely is tops for Wacko's. If Dabo says something at the ACC media kickoff about God, Cal Berkely heads would explode and call for protests probably. Stay far away from this crowd.

I agree. I mean, when Dabo thanks God for Clemson winning a game, it's absolutely ridiculous. Like, if there was a god, he would be worried about Football. Either way, He has a right to say that, and protesting it would be stupid. But, you are right, Berkley probably would.

Clemson/FSU and UNC/NC ST

Aug 18, 2023, 11:09 AM

should vote yes ONLY contingent upon 1) Notre Dame signing up for full-time membership incl. football through 2036, and/or 2) Clemson being granted a release from ACC GOR in 3-4 years parallel with Stanford/Cal/SMU permanent entry, and/or 3) a substantially elevated ACC distribution to top football school(s) based upon results on the field.

ND does not care about helping the ACC and will NEVER agree to give up their independence to join the ACC. The B1G might be a different story at some point and I think NBC could and maybe will help broker a deal to make that happen.

Let's do some math.

2

Aug 18, 2023, 11:11 AM

Say the 17 teams split 100 million bucks. That's 7 million per team. So, Clemson and FSU would only have a 33 million dollar per year deficit over the coots and the gators.

Somehow, I don't think that solves anything.

It doesn't make sense, which is why I would assume if anything does get through, it will be a different split under different parameters.

I still think nothing is going to happen but you can never trust politicians behind closed doors to ever do the right thing.

There is NO WAYY IN HE!! Clemson and FSU are going to just ride it out with the ACC for the next 12 years. I can tell you right now, that simply isn't gonna happen.

As someone else mentioned earlier this week, at some point in the not to distant future, I think you see Clemson and FSU (among others) set-up some kind of a debt instrument to buy their way out of the league and the GOR. They'll pay it off over time from the increased revenue generated after joining another conference.

How did you come up with these numbers? First of all, I don't know where you are seeing that adding these 3 schools will add $90-120M to the TV deal. Who said that?

Second, if you divide that by 14 teams, it's ballpark $7M/school. Where in the world did you come up with $70M as the annual payout?
