Was Bill Foster a better coach than Brownell?

It was a different game in 1982. This is a good look back at what it was like. The talent that UNC had on the court that night. No shot clock. No 3-point line. This is a game that you won't recognize if all you've seen is basketball in the last 30 years. This is good basketball.

I counted 5 NBA starters on that UNC team and at least one HOF player in Michael Jordan. Clemson may have had one NBA talent on that team (Vincent Hamilton), but Foster coached them up and they competed hard every play. Littlejohn was packed with Clemson fans and basketball was exciting. Now we have better facilities and better recruiting but not the intensity to play against the best teams in the nation.

Coach Foster

Always had a strategy. The "Paws" for example. Great coach. He had some great players. Billy Williams, Larry Nance, Chubby, Moose, Vince Hamilton. And we always got screwed by the refs. Lenny Wirtz. Ugh

The ACC was totally different back then... I remember one year

in which we played a team that was ranked #1 in the nation (at some point) seven times. SEVEN TIMES. No, I'm not gonna take the time to look it up, but it was mentioned on a broadcast and in the newspapers. UNC & Duke I'm pretty sure were two. The third team, take your pick... either NCS, Maryland, Virginia, Wake, whoever, I forget. That's how strong the ACC was back then, that 3 different teams were able to get a #1 ranking at some point in the season.
And you didn't get to duck anybody, you had a home-and-away with every team. So you played everybody twice in the regular season. So we played those 3 teams twice each, and then had to face one of them again in the 1st round of the ACC Tournament. That's 7 games. Not to mention that other ACC teams were sprinkled throughout the Top 25. Our schedule was absolutely brutal.
You can't even compare it to today. The ACC in 2020 was by far the weakest I've ever seen. There wasn't even one elite team, let alone several.

You thought the Four Corners was good for college hoops?

I unplug my nose in Dean Smith's direction. Although, he claimed he ran that offense because he was FOR a shot clock, and finally, to make him stop it, the NCAA did put one in.
The most irksome part is that North Carolina back then out talented just about everybody they played. They had absolutely no need of a stall offense. It was just Dean Smith being the prick that Rick Barnes later called him on being.

He did recruit good players but other than Nance did anyone else make the NBA? My recollection is that offensively our teams were very good, but defensively not so much. Style of play was much different. Hard to compare - no transfer portal then - just kidding.

Different eras and completely different styles of play so it is hard to compare.
I’ve heard a lot of people say rhat basketball was way more exciting back then.
I watched some of that YouTube video and I watched Clemson pass it around the key for about 2 minutes before passing it inside and bricking a hook shot.
Seemed like very boring basketball.

Yes. And Foster had a much smaller budget to work with.***

Foster was 4-10 in conference play that season, finished 14-14 overall. We lot to Carolina at home.... again. I think this was his final stretch when we lost 9 of 10 against carolina. I am trying to remember if he even won 5 of his 18 shots against the heels.
The only thing that makes this era "more exciting" was that we played our local/regional rivals. If I did not go to grad schools with a Pitt Alum, I would not know a single Pitt grad. I don't have any Cuse, BC, ND, or Miami friends/enemies.
Brad Brownell is a better coach and it ain't even close IMO. Foster, while having one good run, and a extra NCAA bid, went under .500 in 7 of 9 seasons. This was in an era that was actually seeing a uptick in non-blueblood power conference teams.
