Brad Brownell = Ken Hatfield,

Mar 11, 2016, 6:12 AM

Different sports, same guy. CU has made Brad a wealthy man and we don't get an NIT invite with all his players (no injuries) on the roster this year. Yes he has had the TIME and the results just aren't acceptable unless you're BC or Pitt etc.

DRad needs to hire someone with some personality this time. Brownell has the demeanor of a librarian.

I like Brad but can't say the same for Hatfield as a person***

Wait a minute, my wife was a librarian and she has a pretty good personality. True story but I agree with your point about librarians.

I don't argue that BB has under-performed, but he probably is no Hatfield. I don't think BB inherited a team with the quality depth at nearly every position only to use it all up, adding nothing, and leaving nothing for the next guy. He may leave nothing, but he didn't inherit a quality 3 deep roster either. That said, the way we folded in the game against GT, and he had no idea how to stop it, leaves me ready for a new coach.

Not even close. Sugar Hatfield was given the keys to a Ferrari and made it into a Pinto. Brownell took over a Ford Probe, looks good at the stoplight, but wasn't built to last.

Great post! Hatfield almost destroyed our program by the time he left, and it took 20 years to get it back on track. I doubt BB ever could do that kind of damage.

and left us with a steaming mess that has taken almost 25 years to correct. The comparison to Brownell isn't even close. Brownell was handed a crumbling house of cards, and hasn't been able to rebuild it.

Correct.

Clemson would have won its second national championship in football in 1990 if Danny Ford had not been fired. I firmly believe that. It took Hatfield two seasons of bad recruiting and no off-season workouts to reduce the team to a 5-6 record including a humiliating home loss to SC.

Mar 11, 2016, 11:11 AM [ in reply to Hatfield was handed a national champion caliber team ]

might have been the most talented team in Clemson history. A lot of those guys were around in 1990 when Hatfield had them his first year. The defensive talent on that team was completely out of control. Comical, almost. He ran the program into the ground, period.
