Which former Clemson coach will have the best year?

Jan 7, 2022, 2:06 PM

Unless I missed one, as head coaches, we have Brad Scott at USF, Brent Venables at Oklahoma, and Tony Elliot at UVa. Scott has obviously struggled in his first year or two as HC. Oklahoma has lost almost all of their offensive starters to transfer, NFL or graduation. UVa is, well, UVa. Of the 3, my guess would be Elliot at UVa would have the best first year. Venables has a lot more work to do than he did when he took the job, and should start showing progress around year 2 or 3, I think. But who knows. I wish them each the best, unless they're playing us!

Jeff Scott (I think Brad is in a support role) at USF

I think Jeff has the best season, from an improvement perspective, but he will have fewer wins than either of the other two

Brad Brownell: Only Larry freaking Shyatt has a WORSE overall winning percentage among Clemson basketball coaches since 1975. Let that sink in. It's Larry Shyatt & then Brad Brownell.

I think you meant Jeff Scott, not Brad (his dad).

Personally, I'd put my money on Venables. It may be a down year for Oklahoma, but a down year for them is probably close to a down year for us. I think they win at least 9 games.

A down year for UVA on the other hand... ??

Billy Napier at Florida? There is a lot of talent. All

Jan 7, 2022, 2:30 PM

they need is a coach to bring it all together. Plus, they do play in the SEC East.

I was skeptical of Napier but went back and watched our 2010 game at Auburn recently. He called a dang good and diverse offensive game plan. He’s been under Saban for a long spell now too and had head coaching success. SEC East has been hot garbage other than Georgia. A guy of integrity who can recruit like Dabo. He may have a good run at Florida.

My bad - Jeff Scott (not Brad)

Jan 7, 2022, 3:05 PM

And yep, forgot about Napier. He has a hill to climb at UF, for sure. But agreed - in the SEC Least, that gives him a bit of an advantage.

My win predictions

Jan 7, 2022, 3:16 PM

Venables 9
Napier 8
Elliott 7
Scott 6

But like I said before, if this happens, who had the best season? I say Scott. Honestly, five years from now, I expect Elliott to have the most impact.

I'm afraid UVa has a long way to get back to being good

Jan 7, 2022, 3:26 PM

For Tony's sake, they will be doing good to get bowl eligible.

Best year next year - BV. Next will be Jeff Scott.

Jan 7, 2022, 3:14 PM

Barring injury & other crap like, portal, etc - USF will be on their way in 2023.

Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE, would be disappointed

Jan 7, 2022, 4:01 PM

if Coach Venables does not keep Oklahoma just tripping merrily along.

Coach Napier should have the easiest chance at a quick turnaround, Florida's cupboard is not bare.

Coach JEFF Scott has got to begin to win some games next year. Him getting a two year extension was probably done to quiet the fanbase, but some real on field progress has to happen now.

Looking at dsgriff®'s post from amongst the several responders, I tend to agree with his 'win hierarchy' and also about what the wins mean relative to having a 'best year' when compared to the others.

Oklahoma: Venables / DSGriff's prediction of 9 wins: If BV reaches this (which will be a stretch if he loses C.Williams ... as it seems OU is expecting to do), then 9 wins should be good enough to keep the natives from getting too restless. If OU only wins 7 games, then BV will have to get back to 9 or 10 wins in 2023 to keep the scalp on his head.

Florida: Napier / DSGriff's predicion of 8 wins: Napier will be a Rock Star down in Gainesville if he pulls this off ... even in the mediocre SEC East. Heck if he wins only 6 games he will be given a pass and should not start out the 2023 season on the hot seat.

Virginia: T.Elliott / DSGriff's prediction of 7 wins: Nah, UVA won't win 7 games next year. Too many losses of really good players. Even playing in the pathetically weak ACC Least Division, T.Elliott will be lucky to win 5 games. Fortunately, winning only 5 games will be good enough for T.Elliott in 2022, but if he wins only 3 or 4 games, then he'll be on the hot seat for the 2023 season.

USF: J.Scott / DSGriff's predicion of 6 wins: I don't know USF's schedules nor do I have any clue about the general strengths of what USF's opponents have for 2022 season. But I'd guess that USF would be thrilled if J.Scott can get them out of the dumpster by turning in a 6 game season. However, if it's another 3 win season, then USF may get sick of the J.Scott tenure and make a change.

The bar for what is considered a success at those schools varies a lot. Venables inherits the best team by a mile, but his barometer for success is the CFP. USF and UVA both would be happy with winning seasons in 2022 I imagine. Napier has a lower bar than Venables, but not by much. He is probably in the best position from a recruiting $$$ support standpoint though. Florida money > Okie money.

That's really what I was thinking of

Jan 7, 2022, 4:54 PM

was relative success for their program. Nine wins at OU is average. Nine wins at USF or UVa or even UF isn't too bad - and excellent for UVa. I think BV has the highest expectations, and with as many people as he's lost, may have the harder expectations to live up to. But we'll see!

If Caleb decides to stay at Oklahoma I think BV will do the best for sure.
