William & Mary vs UVA Today

W&M fans are driving into Charlottesville today in hopes of taking down the wounded Cavaliers as James Madison did a week ago. W&M beat Charleston Southern last month 15-7 for context, and this will be Tony Elliott's best shot at a win in 2023.

and it was obvious to all that he was quite the catch.
Played UNCheat early in the season one year at Kenan Stadium. UNC kicked off, and W&M started from the 20. First play was a play-action fake right, and throwback down the left sidelines against a UNC pass defense that was known to be historically poor. Play went Boom! for 80 yards and a TD right out of the gate, lol. Half the wine-and-geezers were still getting to their seats...
Bill Dooley was the Coach at UNC then, brother of UGA's Vince, and somehow even more conservative.
So Dooley brings his offense out in the stacked-I, and starts handing off to the up back again and again like he wrote the Danny Ford playbook, but a good 8 years early. Kevin Mack would have been busting at the seams proud. Apparently the plan was to show Mary just how intimidating baby blue could be. Some fifteen or so "3 yards and a cloud of dust" plays later, UNC scores to tie the game, 7-7.
Not so ol' Lou was ready for the Heels though, and had come in the mind to steal him a W. His offense gets the ball at the 20 again, and sets up on the right hash again as well. QB rolls out with the same play-fake right, though all the defenders buy in this time because surely Lou ain't gonna run the same play-fake twice in a row. LOL, and dang it if he didn't. QB lofts a high pass down the left sidelines again, and it nestles right into an open WR's hands for another 80-yard TD pass. 2 plays, 2 TD's. Never, ever seen anything like it to start a game, either before or in the 50 years since.
I think it was at this point that W&M knew they had a Coach who wasn't staying too long.
The shadows were long on a beautiful autumn day when UNC drove the length of the field late in the 4th, and punched in a two-point conversion within the last minute to win by 1. 36 to 35. Didn't care much for the teams that day, but it was a heckuva game between two good Head Coaches. Dooley later won several ACC Championships at UNC before going on to coach at Va Tech and Wake as well, being successful at all his stops.
Ol' Lou Holtz ended up making quite the name for himself, as well....
