2 teams we should grab right now for the ACC

Aug 23, 2021, 2:58 PM

West Virginia and Navy

Geographically they both make sense.
They both have decent football programs and strong histories

Navy 1 National Championship 2 Heisman trophy winners 700 plus wins
WVU 15 conference titles 712 plus wins

What WVU lacks in academics Navy makes up for:
Navy #6 college in the country, WVU #241 (us new report)

Also, Navy plays ND and army every year. 2 decent revenue generating games

last but not least, Could put more pressure on ND to join

Apparently I will never understand...

Aug 23, 2021, 3:04 PM

the obsession some members of this forum seem to have with teams like Navy, Cincinnati, Memphis, USF, UCF, UConn and Temple.

It's not about getting bigger. It's about getting better and NONE OF THOSE TEAMS add anything of substance to the conference.

Makes no sense to add two teams with zero national following.

Adding "better" never works. Ask Miami. You add to the mid-bottom and the top-tier keeps plugging along.

What you need is to add to the middle and let the tradional power whoop up on a mid-level team. Liek MIzzou or a bottom-dweller than never upsets the normal champs (like the coots)

Re: Apparently I will never understand...

Mizzou won the SEC Least back-to-back in their 2nd and 3rd years in the league.
Yeah, I know, winning the Least doesn’t mean much (as these results prove) but to the Least at least Mizzou was not a doormat. At first.

Re: Apparently I will never understand...

Like BC winning early (3rd and 4th) in the Atlantic as well.

That does not *hurt* overall -kinda renders legitimacy. Mizzou has not won a conference title since... snicker, 1969. However, Pinkel built a decent team and if not for his cancer/drinking, he might still be there.

Like BC/Mizzou is a mid-level team, it will not unseat "traditional powers".

On the other hand, VT having both success (then getting blow out by JMU) and Miami failing hurt the ACC. But then again, the ACC bet the lot when FSU and Miami were faltering....

Re: Apparently I will never understand...

James Madison beat VPI by 5 points last year on the final play of the game. Their only win that I can recall since 1980!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Apparently I will never understand...

Aug 23, 2021, 4:07 PM

VT lost to JMU in 2010 (and Boise State) and then rifled off 11 straight wins (9 vs acc teams) to win the ACC that year and get blown out by Meeechigan's current coach by 30+ points.

JMU score 14 unanswered points in the 2nd half of that game and what really capped it off was that they forced a VT TO on downs and then held onto the ball for 1/2 of the 4th and VT could not even get an opportunity for a comeback. Basically marched down the field, held onto the ball and burned the clock.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we've got plenty of those..what will one more do for us?

Aug 24, 2021, 8:14 AM [ in reply to Re: Apparently I will never understand... ]

If you want mid-bottom then the ACC is stacked, trust me.

I like Navy, and have a few clients that played ball at Canoe U even. That said, no thanks. AAC is not on par with the ACC even. WVU I get, but Navy playing in the ACC, PLUS ND and i think you would see them being the new Syracuse. Not throwing stones, but other than maybe Syracuse, I struggle to think of a team that Navy would beat. Well, Duke as it appears they are headed back to being, well..Duke FB. I get the viewership and alumni base, but i would like to add some swagger to the schedule as well.

Re: 2 teams we should grab right now for the ACC

Aug 23, 2021, 3:06 PM

No to WVU, yes to Navy

Then split North/South

ND, BC, Cuse, Pitt, UofL, Navy, VT, UVA

Clemson, Miami, FSU, GT, Carolinas,

Everyone plays 7 games, plus one standing crossover game. ND/Miami, UNV/UVA, GT/Navy (Triple Option Bowl), NCSU vs UofL for the pencil beard bowl, Clemson can keep BC because why not. Wake plays Cuse and Duke plays Pitt. GT vs VT for the rights over the term tech.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

or...

Aug 23, 2021, 3:09 PM

Notre Dame joins as a full member so adding other teams is no longer necessary, get rid of the Divisions entirely and put the top two teams in the conference championship game each year.

Re: or...

Aug 23, 2021, 3:58 PM

But then you run the risk of wonky tie-breakers, strength of schedule, etc. See the 2014 Baylor/TCU and imagine if that was for the 2nd place running. Baylor had the tie-breaker but TCU was the better team. Just look how NC State got to 7-3 last year by not playing ND or us. On the other hand, BC was 5-5 but played every but Miami. It would be plausable for three undefeated teams (in conference) to make it though the season.

I still think that splitting off into geographic divisions is better. The North with ND and VT will produce a good champ and give room for the Cuse/Pitt/UofL to win a division when they are 10 wins but not better than us.

It would also create the uber division with traditional football power beating the heck out of NC State and UNC

Surely you are not serious...right? Wake is one of like 4-5 teams in the nation that has went to a bowl the last 8 years. I forget the stat but it was pretty amazing actually, all things considered. I will admit that if Clawson leaves there I see a change coming. As far as Duke.. Boot the annual title contender in CBB to the curb.

outliers that don't match our geographic area and should be Big 10 teams. WVU fits and thats about it honestly. OF those that are available.

Also, the only thing that will put pressure on ND to join is to be left out in the cold for the CFB playoff. With the increase in teams being added, that will be unlikely now as ND will be in the conversation as long as they have less than 3 losses.

You want to pull in teams with insane fanbases. You know, fans who throw opponents fans off the top of the upper deck like I saw Miami fans trying to do to Florida fans in the early 80s. Fans who travel and can out number the home crowd at like Vandy and Duke. Basically the ACC is going to have to steal from the SEC.

Georgia, LSU and Florida is who you want for starters.

I say this with tongue in check as the reality is only Notre Dame is going to be able to move the meter as no one from Big10, SEC, or PAC12 are going to leave their conferences for the ACC.

A road trip to Annapolis would sure beat a road trip to Knoxville or Lexington or several other SEC stops. Anything to get UNCC SC State off the schedule. ... forever.

never going to get Penn State to the ACC, wish we could not not gonna happen and we aren't going to get any decent teams from the SEC either. Best beat is West Virginia and either Texas Tech or Baylor to get something in Texas.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 2 teams we should grab right now for the ACC

Aug 23, 2021, 3:53 PM

Teams that help the conference are few unless taken from SEC or Big 10 -> not likely to happen.

I think we have enough teams, but would not mind trading some we have --> not going to happen.

I am kinda po-ed at ND for "playing" the ACC with out committing, but they make sense. They make even more sense for the Big Ten.

I hope we don't end up with some of those Big 12 teams looking for a new home.
Some of the Florida teams are adding lots of $$, but the ACC already has FS and Miami there. Still, I would rather take them than WV. Army and Navy would be a bad fit.

No and no.

Navy national champs 1926, Heisman Joe Bellino – 1960, Roger Staubach – 1963, since joining in 2015, they have won their division 3 times, zero conf champs.

WVU since joining the little 8, they finished 2nd once, some great people and fans, but student section rivals uscjr. Adds very little to tv market.

Keep in mind, some of the weak ACC football programs, bring tv market in MBB.

My nephew's high school football team generates more television revenue than NAVY and WVU combined.

Seriously, it's not about just adding football teams to your conference. Navy and West Virginia would actually decrease Clemson's TV revenue payout, which is the opposite of the goal.

Think teams like ND and Penn State....they bring HUGE television following.

Our yearly distribution per team in the ACC would go down with Navy... maybe stay about the same with WV. The ACC wont expand unless it gets teams that increase revenue and that means teams like ND, Penn St. Maybe OkSt.

Re: 2 teams we should grab right now for the ACC

Aug 24, 2021, 8:20 AM

We don't need to add anyone. Wait for this alliance thing to play out. Chamges made could allow us to renegotiate the conference tv contracts which is what we all want in the end. Quit trying to chase the SEC and let them wallow in their own conference which is getting too big to manage. The whining Texas will do alone will make it unwieldy
