An observation on the pick 6....

Oct 17, 2016, 6:29 AM

When Watson stopped play to ask for a different football, it was obvious that he would be throwing a pass. I turned to my son and said that very thing. The NCSU LB knew it too, he abandoned the run at the snap and drifted back into the throwing lane. Without DW asking for a different ball that pick 6 would never have happened.

Beg to differ. Because he threw the INT had nothing to do with the defense knowing he was going to pass. We threw the ball 52 times. Now, if he pointed at the receiver and said "it's coming to you", THEN the LB might know where the ball was going. Him asking for a new ball had nothing to do with it.

Knowing a pass is coming instead of a hand off to Fuller allows the LB to drop off the line into the flats (exactly where he was) and has everything to do with the pick. Asking for a ball change should have resulted in a new play possibly being called.

Did you watch the replay? The LB immediately runs into the throwing lane, not even checking for a running play. It is possible that NCSU called a weird D based on the expectation of a slant, but I highly doubt it. That LB knew a pass was coming, and happened to guess correctly seems far more likely to me. Did you not know DW was going to pass on that play? Why would you ask for a different ball if you are just going to hand off?

It wasn't the LB dropping in the flats. It was the corner moving to the flats, and the safety dropped down to cover the receiver. It was a designed defensive play. The corner got the pic 6.

it wasnt a LB, it was the corner

He slid inside off the wr and safety slid out to cover the wr.

It snookered us

Tying the interception to switching the ball is more coincidence than anything. Every play has multiple options...run first, pass first, but still the option or to check out of the original play. Even the commentator mentioned he'd never seen a CB drop into that coverage and suggested it was a mistake that turned out well...and that DW never saw the guy. It was a quick-hit pass play, so it's not like DW surveyed the field before tossing...it was an 'on-time' pass. Just one of the many weird plays...probably because it was a full-moon weekend. ;)
