Why targeting is dangerous.

Praying for Sevyn Banks. This post is not about him. Watch the replay. Clearly he was guilty of targeting. (After video review he was called for targeting, though no flag was thrown on the field.)
When people say, "Targeting was put into to rules to protect the player who is doing the targeting more than it was to protect the player being targeted" this video is evidence they are telling the truth.
I don't have any update on his injury. Praying he is OK.

Almost as dangerous...

as obvious horse collar tackles and facemask penalties that are simply ignored by an incompetent group of officials.

The google reports he was cleared to leave the hospital and return to the stadium. Glad he is ok.

Why drop the head there? Hope thst he is ok. .
Still, he targeting rule/penalty is a mess and needs changed. There is already a penalty called spearing. That definition needs to be tweaked and that penalty used...+10yds from spot of foul or something like that. The automatic ejection is BS and "Targeting" should be reserved for the truly egregious attempt to KO truly defenseless players.
With that said, the simple way for all these players to avoid the ejection is to simply look up and hit with their facemasks.

Spearing was replaced with the "leading with the crown of the helmet" side of the targeting rule (the one Mukuba was ejected for).

If you watch the play where Mukuba was ejected for targeting

his whole neck appears to compress straight down. I know some of that (thank goodness) was give in the helmet padding inside, but it still looked potentially very bad from an injury standpoint.

Available in this great country I believe we will soon have equipment that will greatly reduce the injuries in sports Especially football helmets. It has always been a violent sport but it is become even more so today. Concussions are no laughing matter.!

I'm just not sure if the targeting rule is reducing the number of these types of hits or if it's just punishing those who commit them.

I agree . it is just a part of the game and always has been. Football is a collision sport. There is no way to change that and keep the game exciting. Fans will not show up for touch football! The spring game is enough! With that said, research for player safety should continue and I think that it will.

Mike Buoniconti's son, while playing for the Citadel, speared a runner, broke his neck, and was a paraplegic for the remainder of his life.
