"Alliance" Sources: More details NOT in the release.

Aug 24, 2021, 3:10 PM

Sources close to the situation have said they are worried about ESPN's investment in the SEC and owning the current rights of the CFP (playoffs). The Alliance has a goal of breaking up those entities and selling off pieces of the CFP to other networks, FOX, NBC, CBS, Amazon, Apple, etc. Collusion is the biggest worry and the word coming out is they will vote not to change the CFP until the contract runs out (blocking the SEC and ESPN pushing for the 12, and to start it earlier than the end of the contract).

They don't want the SEC and ESPN to be able to bully everyone, the bigger picture is a 5-6 year plan, moving to an NFL type model, 50-60 teams, 16 playoff spots--"The Alliance" is trying to stop that and keep the collegiate model. There is a worry that the SEC is going to try to become the football governing body, and each sport will have different structures.

The Alliance will block any expansion, they don't want ESPN to control college football and the CFP (and their biggest investment, the SEC)--that is the big picture and short term reasoning for this alliance, ESPN owning the rights of the CFP is the biggest issue that this was created to combat.

Side note, no one wants the remaining Big 12 team, Kansas is the only entity anyone wants and that's for basketball--Baylor has no following and baggage for those who think Baylor would be good for basketball as well. The Big 12 is going to force Texas and Oklahoma to stay until the end of their contract as well, trying to replace them, but there are no high end team to add (like a Texas/Oklahoma).

Anyways, info I have heard and have not seen on Tnet or many other places.

Dan Patrick has taken a deep dive into it the last 2 days with his CFB sources, he was at the front and first to report the Big 10/Pac 12 cancel (then restart) their seasons last year, had great reporting on all of it last year-- seems to have some legit, reliable connections giving him good info. Thought I would pass it along since not seeing it mentioned many other places.

This makes some sense to me. I don't know if the alliance will work, but something has to balance SEC/ESPN or college football will be nothing but that.

I think that's the ultimate goal, some balance, accountability and avoiding a monopoly--any scheduling is just a benefit to us consumers, getting a better product eventually (6+ years down the road).

There's no such thing as a stupid question, just stupid people who ask questions.

It could well be just that...but it makes some sense that that would be underlying goals.

I am not mad at that...

Also, according to The Athletic, the Pac-12 has been the one really pushing this from the start.

I’m all for making E$ECPN and the $EC sweat. Good on anybody not making it easier for them!
