Can we stop with "the defense was gassed"
Oct 23, 2021, 9:44 PM

When Pitt got the ball with 8 minutes left after we scored a TD, they had run 67 plays. We had run 62 at that point. They then could not get off the field and allowed Pitt to grind out the final 8 minutes.

We can start complaining about the defense when the offense breaks the top 100.

We had only 1 offensive possession in the 4th qtr for a TD and a total of 1:30.

My point is…The offense allowed more points in the second half than the defense. It is absurd to even consider criticizing the defense when the offense is this bad.

A "championship defense" doesn't tap out after 67 plays. They gave up 2 TD's late in the 2 QRT and allowed Pitt 13 minutes of possession in the 4th. Please try to defend that.

Pitt has a really good offense. They will get theirs sometimes…like every other good offense. We are talking about a very good defensive performance and not a poor, not a bad, not a very bad, but a terrible offensive performance...again Pitt came in averaging ~50 ppg and held to 20 on defense without any help from the O.

They allowed Pitt 13:30 minutes of 4th qtr possession. That's not good.

That’s not the problem, a gauge of the team’s will, maybe, but obviously not the problem…see above or literally all recap/statistics from any game this year.

Allowing a team 13:30 in the 4th is not a problem? What? We saw the same thing in the GT game. Georgia also grinded out several 1st downs and ended the game after the offense finally came to life. The defense failed us when we got the lead in OT vs NCST. They nearly allowed Cuse to rally back after the offense put us up by 2 scores late in the game.

Why do you say this? While much of the blame is on the offense, the defense has had issues getting off the field all season. They share in the blame.

Because criticism of the defense is a smokescreen. The defense hasn't had issues all season, the offense has.
The defense has been playing at an elite level all year. They played a very good game tonight.
The offense has been terrible all year and again tonight. They haven't been below average, bad, or very bad. They have been terrible. Like one of 10 worst offenses in D1 football bad.
The level of effort to get the offense to at least below average should be vastly easier than getting the defense to go from very good to perfect.

They have not been playing at an elite level. They have consistently failed in the 4th qtr this year, especially right after the offense provides a huge momentum swing.

OK…let me try to explain this… PITT is averaging 42 PPG, the defense holds them to less than half of that, 20…PITT is giving up 22 ppg, the offense nets 10, less than half of that. Which side of the ball is problem?

But they allowed Pitt over 13 minutes of possession in the 4th. 67 plays is not an excuse as being too gassed to not allow Pitt to run out 8 minutes of clock.

This is almost November. The defense is banged up, hurt, tired, missing players due to injury, etc. They have played more time than they should have due to the lack of offense.

Do you have numbers to back this up? They allowed both GT and Pitt to virtually own the entire 4th qtr. They squandered 4th qtr and overtime leads against State. They nearly blew a 2 possession lead against the Cuse. We are suppose to be really deep with our talent. Where has the pass rush been? What's up with giving up all these 3rd and long conversions against inferior competition?

Nice Strawman. Didn't say that. But there is no excuse for this "championship caliber" defense to not be able to get off the field against Pitt.

Please explain? I mean you flip the ######? Why can't the Offense ####### score? Offense do your job, once, show you can do your job , once, once!
You can't strain one side consistently and expect equal results. That's common sense / logic.

Our offense was on the field for only 1:30 of the 4th, and they scored a TD. What's the explanation for our championship defense that has 4 and 5 stars on the 2 deep to get skull fricked like that?

Completely agree with this assessment. My prediction going into the game was the offense would be what it was and the defense would not be able to get off the field. Guess what part of the reason you are on the field so much is that you cannot get off. Unfortunately I was right.
In summary this is what our Tigers are and it makes us vulnerable to losing every game.

You mean you are questioning his success with the three down lineman to stop a passing attack? Forget LSU and OSU which were record setting failures of epic proportions. Instead focus on the failure of this scheme to stop Pitt, and last minute drives by Ga Tech, NC State, BC, and Cuse. Is there a pattern here? Why isn't the NFL looking to hire BV as a DC? Never a single call. Ever. Why?

BV just got beat on multiple plays by a gifted QB and an Offensive line that know how to get away with holding. We blitzed hard - they torched us deep. Refs did not help us out much until the game was already over.

Venables might not like the idea of bend, don't break, but we have done a lot of that this year. Still tough to complain about a defense that only gave up 20 points to what was considered a very good offense. If the d gives up 20, we should win every time.

how many points below their average? 17? 20? They’ve also played a game’s worth of snaps more than the offense. That’s because the O can’t stay on the field. Oh and without their best player while the 2nd best played basically with one arm.
The defense is not the problem.

Not the problem. But to state it is the offenses fault that they are on the field so much is not fair.
This D has showed the inability to step up and make plays to get off the field all year long.
The cushion that I see the DBs giving is perplexing at times

Their job is to also give the ball back to the offense. Allowing Pitt to hold the ball for 13:30 of the 4th qtr is acceptable? The offense even gave them the momentum of a quick score.

In our three losses, the defense has allowed only 4 TDS in regulation. FOUR!
That’s getting it done IMO.

I agree....the D wasn't great--but good enough to win (20 points given up). You are not accounting for the ######## this Offense has been ALL year and the cumulative effect it has had on the D...week after week after week. Throw in key injuries where many on the D have have had to play many many more snaps b/c our offense sucks and is three and out all #### day. Yes, D wasn't great tonight...but O has alot to do with it.
This isn't one or the other....both sides played bad tonight....but the offense is BY FAR a bigger issue on this team right now than the D THIS YEAR. Its not even debatable

This defense has had a problem all year of getting off the field, especially in the 4th qtr. Georgia, GT, State, Cuse and today were all games where the D failed to capitalize on 4th qtr momentum generated by the O.

The defense just isn't that great. We need Davis healthier. I don't think he is 100%. We need Bresee. We need some upgrades on D generally. The current D is overrated by our fans. It's a solid D, but nothing special. It's a capable D. That's all. We have a capable D and a horrible O. That makes a 4-3 team vs average competition outside of Georgia. We're lucky to be 4-3 too.

I noticed at Ncst that this isnt a domjnant defense. They’re good, but not close to the defenses in ‘17-19 seasons. They dont allow a ton of points, but they give up a shyte ton of first downs, allowing teams to milk the clock and limit possessions. Pass rush isnt getting home very often.
